The Condition of the Working Class in England

Friedrich Engels
Stanford University Press

Awesome
Fabuous book. Engels wrote this when he was only 24- and what a tour de force. The work is detailed, beautifully observed and elegantly written. Despite the depressing nature of the subject matter, the tone is always possible about a better world beyond the evils of capitalism. Unfortunately 150 years after this masterpiece was written things dont seen to have gotten better under capitalism. ...

German Philosophy - Idealism and Romanticism.
_German Philosophy 1760 - 1860: The Legacy of Idealism_ by Terry Pinkard is a unique book which examines the sorts of philosophical systems being proposed in Germany during that time period. Although at first Germany was not united, philosophy came to take on a unique German flavor, often meaning little more than the opaqueness of the language. For a generation of disenfranchised youth, Goethe ...

simply delightful to read as well as a thorough resource
I can't believe I'm the first to write about this. I bought this a few years back while a graduate student in modern European history. My focus was primarily industrialization. This book is a joy. Ashton provides a thorough picture of the Revolution from several perspectives. He describes how events and developments built upon each other and how the innovators fed each others efforts. ...

Christopher Morris

A brilliant study of antebellum Mississippi
Morris examines the development of a Mississippi community from early frontier to its rise as a center of the cotton culture. The book is extremely well written. Unlike most historians who attempt to write community studies, Morris writes with the reader in mind. His prose is accessible yet informative, sophisticated yet always enagaging. A must read for anyone who wants to learn more about ...

Ready-Made Democracy: A History of Men's Dress in the American Republic, 1760-1860

Michael Zakim

Interesting!
As I finish this book, my head is fairly spinning. I'm left with the distinct impression that Zakim is a rather brilliant man; if the same can be said of his book, however, I am less certain. Ready Made Democracy attempts to trace the development of the modern American capitalist society through a close examination of the men's ready-made clothing industry. In this respect, the book's ...

British Economic Growth During the Industrial Revolution
N. F. R. Crafts
Oxford University Press, USA

In recent years, traditional views of a rapidly growing British economy between 1700 and 1850 have been overturned by convincing new research indicating that British economic growth was, in fact, relatively slow during much of the so-called industrial "revolution". This revisionist work, which is certain to profoundly affect any future scholarship on the subject, is the first to give a fully documented account of the new picture of British ...
