Splendid Isolation: The Jekyll Island Millionaires Club 1888-1942

A Splendid Read Indeed
Splendid Isolation is not only historical, but very entertaining. Pamela Bauer Mueller has accomplished the difficult feat of bringing characters from the past to life. This is a good read for anyone interested in all that was going on at the turn of the century when the Jekyll Island Club was built to its seeming end in the World War II era. The book evokes many mental images of what life was ...
Blacks and Whites in Sao Paulo, Brazil, 1888-1988
George Reid Andrews
University of Wisconsin Press
, 1991
For much of the twentieth century Brazil enjoyed an international reputation as a ?racial democracy,? but that image has been largely undermined in recent decades by research suggesting the existence of widespread racial inequality. George Reid Andrews provides the first thoroughly documented history of Brazilian racial inequality from the abolition of slavery in 1888 up to the late 1980s, showing how economic, social, and political changes ...

A Close Presidential Election in the Gilded Age
The election of 1888 had an intense nomination battle at the Republican Convention, a close general election, and a set of issues and campaigning styles far outside of modern norms. These elements make Charles W. Calhoun's history of this election interesting and enjoyable. The book begins with a discussion of United States politics in the 1880s. The South was dependably Democratic, most of ...

A glorious exploration
Sir John F. Herschel gets credit for coining the word "snapshot" in 1860; "The possibility of taking a photograph, as it were by a snap-shot -- of securing a picture in a tenth of a second of time." (He also coined "photography" itself, and was the first to apply "negative" and "positives" to photography.) Given his wide ranging interests, I'm sure he would have loved this book as much as I do. ...

Read it with Mahler
A fascinating, colorfully written portrait of Vienna during a critical ten months in its history. Brings the reader onto the streets of this dramatic city with its extreme social tensions and magnificent cultural richness. Read this with Brahms or Mahler playing and you'll be transported.

Clover
It is a shame that Susan Coolidge's books are either unheard of or out of print. If you enjoyed reading "What Katy Did", "What Katy Did at School", and "What Katy Did Next", you will love "Clover". In it, we read of our beloved Katy's marriage, and our nearly as beloved Clover's experiences in Colorado. It was an enjoyable read, although short, and I am hoping that "In the High Valley" (the ...

TO BE A SLAVE IN BRAZIL
The roots and leaves of the institution of slavery in Brazil, is what this book focuses on. We travel the trade route from Africa to England to South America. Katia M. de Queiros Mattoso's goal is to show us that, contrary to popular belief, the new slaves who were ripped from their homeland were "docile" and " ready to accept their new status as slaves" (85). She brings us into a world that ...

childhood favorite!
I must have read this book when I was 7 or 8. When my familiy moved, I searched in vain for the book to re-read, but it must have been lost in the move. I discovered it on a friend's shelf a few weeks ago, and re-read it. What joy! I always thought of this as the story where a bad guy steals Holy Water, but it is much more than this. The young hero has two dreadful brothers. He takes their ...
A Christmas Posy (1888)
Mrs. Molesworth
Kessinger Publishing, LLC

Mary Louisa Molesworth (1839-1921) was a Scottish writer. Her first novels, Lover and Husband (1869) to Cicely (1874), appeared under the pseudonym of "Ennis Graham. " She typified late Victorian writing for girls. Aimed at girls too old for fairies and princesses but too young for Austen and the Brontės, books by Molesworth had their share of amusement, but they also had a good deal of moral instruction. The girls reading Molesworth would grow ...

...lesson one..
Marvelous is the only word to describe this first of three volumes of Anton Chekhov's short stories published by the Modern Library. While the following two compilations are each superlative in their own way (thank you again, Shelby Foote), this Early Short Stories 1883-88, is a thrilling peek at genuis not only flowering but seemingly mature; a self-assured young artist at play in his ...

So very welcome!
Finally, some of Day's scrapbooks are available without a trip to Kew. These have long been one of the treasures of the world of orchid literature. I do wish more of Day's text had been included; I guess I'd really be happiest if it were just a straight reproduction of his scrapbooks, without any additional text--but this is almost as good as it gets.

Note: Amazon has grouped together reviews of several different editions of this book; this review is for George Washington's Rules of Civility & Decent Behavior in Company and Conversation (Little Books of Wisdom).
