The Crisis of the Old Order: 1919-1933, The Age of Roosevelt, Volume I (The Age of Roosevelt)4 reviews
Jr.", Arthur M. "Schlesinger

Mariner Books, 2003

Bancroft Award Winner for History. Classic on FDR's New Deal
This outdated book won the Bancroft Prize in 1958 and the Francis Parkman Prize at the same time. The four-volume "Age of Roosevelt" is the an important history of the Great Depression era, written by a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author with his point of view coloring the work. Most readers probably should choose a more recent book on the subject, such as a good FDR biography. More ...

Edmund Wilson: Literary Essays and Reviews of the 1920s & 30s: The Shores of Light / Axel's Castle / ...3 reviews
Edmund Wilson

Library of America, 2007

I do not pretend that my judgments are anything other than mysterious emotional responses
This first volume of an LoA edition of E.Wilson collects reviews and literary essays on and from the 20s and 30s. I think they should be required reading for all Amazonian amateur reviewers. Not that I always agree with everything that he had to say. He was a snob, no doubt, and proud of it, it seems. (Look at the delightful text called Muses out of Work from the 20s, where he pontificates on ...

The Perils of Prosperity, 1914-1932 (The Chicago History of American Civilization)9 reviews
William E. Leuchtenburg

University Of Chicago Press, 1993

Scandals and Speakeasies
I had to read this book for my American History Since 1877 course. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed reading this book. I thought I knew about the 1920's, and after reading this book I knew that I knew nothing at all. This book covers ever aspect of the decade and gives it more than just a name. The book covers political, economic, and social issues of the day. It explains the state of ...

The Teapot Dome Scandal: How Big Oil Bought the Harding White House and Tried to Steal the Country15 reviews
Laton Mccartney

Random House, 2008

The Last Of The American Robber Barons
This reads like a fast paced mystery novel, which in many ways is what it is. One of the US' most massive thefts in the early 20th century is matched by the most corrupt national government we've had thus far. The actions of president Harding and his close associates bring to mind Pope Leo X's remark about taking full advantage of the opportunity. Unlike Leo, the people behind the Teapot Dome ...

For the Thrill of It: Leopold, Loeb, and the Murder That Shocked Chicago12 reviews
Simon Baatz

Harper, 2008

The Legend of Leopold and Loeb Comes To Life!
Despite the fact that Bobby Franks's grizzly murder took place in 1924, the subsequent trial of Leopold and Loeb has never let go of our collective imaginations. When one reads For the Thrill of It, one can easily understand why. The murder of Bobby Franks by wealthy teenagers Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb touces on many issues that are still fervently talked about today: the limits of ...

Glitter and Doom: German Portraits from the 1920s (Metropolitan Museum of Art Publications)9 reviews
Sabine Rewald, Ian Buruma, ...

Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2006

Long Wait for an Excellent Book
Finally an excellent review of what the first World War did to German culture and psyche. This book lays it all out. Hitler was a logical consequence. Unfortunately the Western world did not pay enough attention to these portentious signs. The book has beautiful color reproductions, great detailed commentary on each artist featured and enaough historical commentary to make it all plausible.

Anxious Decades: America in Prosperity and Depression 1920-1941 (Norton twentieth century America series)6 reviews
Michael E. Parrish

W. W. Norton & Company, 1994

Harding to Pearl Harbor - quite an era
Anxious Decades is a volume in the Norton Twentieth Century America Series that addresses the decades of the twenties and the thirties. Michael E. Parrish has taken on the challenging task of giving us a consice volume addressing all of the societal, political, and economic trends that occured during these vastly different decades. The 1920's, known as the "roaring twenties" were indeed years ...

The Well of Loneliness: A 1920s Classic of Lesbian Fiction36 reviews
Radclyffe Hall

Anchor, 1990

extremely well written romantic tragedy
The first thing I noticed about Radclyffe Hall's "The Well of Loneliness," was the beautiful descriptive exposition. Before the novel delves too far into modernism, it is apparent that it is hedging out the Victorian. Descriptions of the English countryside, of London and of Paris are some of the finest written in English. Not only this but the painstaking care the Hall takes to describe her ...

Death by Water: A Phryne Fisher Mystery1 review
Kerry Greenwood

Poisoned Pen Press, 2008

briny phryne
my favorite sleuth, the stylish, independent phyrne fisher goes to sea in this volume of one of the best mystery series in existence. as usual, greenwood has done her homework, and makes the days of the great ocean liners come to life. her characters are well drawn, the dialogue is believable, and the gleefully intricate plot pays homage to at least two of the traditions of the so-called ...

The Damned and the Beautiful: American Youth in the 1920s (Galaxy Books)3 reviews
Paula S. Fass

Oxford University Press, USA, 1979

THE ABSOLUTE BEST STUDY OF ITS KIND
When I was writing my book COMPLICATED WOMEN, I started looking for books that talked about what was happening with youth in the early part of the 20th century. THE DAMNED AND THE BEAUTY had everything I needed to know. Fass's research is thorough and impeccable, and she's a fine writer. I leaned heavily on this book and on Fass's research. I read other books, plenty of them, but kept coming ...

Golden Fetters: The Gold Standard and the Great Depression, 1919-1939 (NBER Series on Long-Term Factors in ...5 reviews
Barry Eichengreen

Oxford University Press, USA, 1996

A tremendous trip into la-la land
Barry Eichengreen's classic tale of financial hubris and mismanagement is almost ten years old. But it's still riveting. It's a broad-sweep introduction for generalists and financial buffs alike. And it's very well written too. The book begins by describing the inner workings of the gold standard and how it evolved from its inception in the 1800s. This part may be a bit dry for generalists, but ...

The Modern Temper: American Culture and Society in the 1920s
Lynn Dumenil

Hill and Wang, 1995

When most of us take a backward glance at the 1920s, we may think of prohibition and the jazz age, of movies stars and flappers, of Harold Lloyd and Mary Pickford, of Lindbergh and Hoover--and of Black Friday, October 29, 1929, when the plunging stock market ushered in the great depression. But the 1920s were much more. Lynn Dumenil brings a fresh interpretation to a dramatic, important, and misunderstood decade. As her lively work makes clear, ...

Art of Finger Waving -- Recreating Vintage 1920s and 1930s Hairstyles
Paul Compan

Bramcost Publications, 2007

Originally published in 1930, this rare book contains very detailed instructions and illustrations for recreating the fantastic long and short hair finger wave styles of the 1920s and 1930s. Finger waving is the shaping of the hair while wet into "s-curved" undulations using your fingers and a comb. You'll learn this technique as well as creating the three types of swirls to use based on the hair type of the wearer. The book begins with ...

Peaches and Daddy: A Story of the Roaring 20s, the Birth of Tabloid Media, and the Courtship that Captured ...6 reviews
Michael Greenburg

Overlook Hardcover, 2008

a dazzling read!
Peaches and Daddy is brilliant! Greenburg recounts history in a way that is not only well structured and researched, but also highly entertaining. The reader gets thrown into the Roaring 20's and caught up in the birth of sensationalist journalism, following protagonists whose lives were too tumultuous and preposterous to invent for a fictional book. It's a wonder that the tale has taken so ...

Our Hearts Were Young And Gay: An Unforgettable Comic Chronicle of Innocents Abroad in the 1920s5 reviews
Cornelia Otis Skinner, Emily Kimbrough

Should be THE INNOCENTS ABROAD, but that title's been taken
"We were poisonously young." - Co-authors Skinner and Kimbrough OUR HEARTS WERE YOUNG AND GAY is a travel essay that appeared in 1942. West Coast Bungalows of the 1920s: With Photographs and Floor Plans4 reviews
E. W. Stillwell & Co.

Dover Publications, 2006

Small but packs a Powerful Punch
I loved this little book. It's small, but every page contains a photograph of the exterior and at least one floor plan. In many cases, alternate floor plans are also provided. Wilson designed classic California bungalows. His designs are under-appreciated, and in many cases inspiring. If you live in or lust after a California bungalow, you'll spend hours pouring over the ideas and plans presented ...

1920: The Year of the Six Presidents28 reviews
David Pietrusza

Basic Books, 2008

Great Story of an Important Election
David Pietrusza's "1920" is devoted to a dramatic presidential campaign in American history. The campaign took place against the backdrop of post-WWI social/labor unrest and inflation, and the country longed for a "return to normalcy". However, America was changing rapidly as the Roaring Twenties began. Automobile ownership was exploding, Prohibition had taken effect, the nation was rapidly ...
