Not a Tell-All But Definitely a Work of Art
If you're not very familiar with Bob Dylan and want to learn more about the man this is really not the book for you. I suggest you read Clinton Heylin's tome, "Behind The Shades, Take 2" which compiles just about every known fact about Dylan from the people who have known him - an excellent book in every way. Chronicles is a different animal. I think you are more likely to appreciate it if you ...

Obligatory Reading
Virginia Woolf in her best form - personal but not self-centred, concentrated and ready to fight for what she believes is right. This long essay gives her views on the position of women in literature but offers also an overview of their role through centuries - from the imaginary Shakespeare's sister to her contemporaries. A must read for all readers regardless of sex!

Best Kindle edition of Joyce's "Portrait"
There are many editions of James Joyce's "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" available, but this is easily the best Kindle edition. The text is based on Chester Anderson's 1964 text. There are also a good number of annotations by Seamus Deane--fewer than in Anderson's Viking Critical edition but sometimes more detailed and aimed at a less scholarly audience. best of all, this edition is a ...

The ' Sublime ' Terry and the Pirates enters its 6th year
What a comic strip. The first three volumes of the already gripping adventure began in 1935 with a blocky, art deco style almost flat and hyerogliphic like all good early 1930s strips in the vein of Chester Goulds' Dick Tracy. The masterful Milton Caniff yet to emerge as the consummate storyteller he was so soon to become developed a new style, in his use of heavily stylised black areas, ...

Well Researched, but also Interesting
Alison Light clearly does her homework. "Mrs. Woolf and the Servants" is absolutely loaded with the products of her very thorough research. Not only does she tell us as much as humanly possible about the various servants who worked for Virginia Woolf, Vanessa Bell, and others of the Bloomsbury set, but she tells us about the lives of their parents, as well. Light strives to create a clear ...

Well done! One of the best on war
This is one of the best books on the WWII. I love it. It's stripped off the hollyweirdish heroics and thats why this is great. It's real and sticks well. I can't get enough of it. The War and the companion book do make me appreciate the United States and its people's sacrifices during the war. This is a great collection!

This is my story
Suze Rotolo has captured the essence of the sixties in The Village with devastating accuracy. She has told my story, with all my own experiences, these many long years later, ; parts of which moved me to tears. Here I thought I was the only one who saw and remembered things this way. Her descriptions were spot on target; it was just like being back there working at the Gaslight and hanging ...

New Deal as Seen from the Reagan Era
This book was written in 1983, in the early years of Ronald Reagan's presidency. It's very interesting to see how angry the Reagan fans are at reading it. Biased! they cry, and so it is... forthrightly biased against Reagan, but intelligently skeptical toward the alleged success of Keynsian solutions to the Depression. Critics of FDR today seem widely to assume that the New Deal was strictly a ...

Sometimes the truth has a liberal bias
To write a good history book like this one an author needs to do well in three separate areas. He needs to research the topic at hand, write a readable account and finally analyze the events. Kinzer performs exceptionally well in all three areas. First, the book is meticulously researched. He discusses appropriate history without going into unnecessary or boring details to give the reader an ...

An Excellent Addition to the New Vanguard Series
Although the story of the Japanese super-battleship Yamato has attracted some attention over the years, the history of the Imperial Japanese Navy's entire battleship force in the Second World War has generally received much less attention. In Osprey's New Vanguard No. 146, Imperial Japanese Navy Battleships 1941-45, naval historian Mark Stille provides an excellent summary of the 12 ships that ...

Middle East Understanding
Everyone interested in understanding what is going on in Iraq, Iran and the rest of the middle east should read this book. It provides a succinct, informed history of rulers, dynasties, cultures, etc. that affect today's life in this area. A super read! The author literally immersed himself in these cultures at great risk in order to provide an accurate portrayal.

Woolf's most beautiful autobiographical writing
People who have enjoyed Woolf's novels or diaries will surely find her essay "A Sketch of the Past" deeply moving and helpful in illuminating her other works. In "Sketch," the longest essay in this volume, Woolf recounts her earliest childhood memories--both beautiful (hearing the waves break on the shore at her family's summer home) and sinister (her stepbrother's unwelcome sexual advances when ...

A Review of A Boy at War by Steven
This is a great and stunning book! It is about a high school age boy named Adam. Adam's dad is in the Navy in Hawaii. In the beginning of the book Adam doesn't have any friends because his family has to move a lot. Then he becomes friends with two boys, Davi and Martin. One day when Adam is fishing with Davi and Martin the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor and bomb American battleships. ...

When the world hung in the balance
For those familiar with Kershaw primarily through his definitive two-volume biography of Adolf Hitler, 'Fateful Choices' might seem, at first glance, like a comparatively light-weight book with a 'what-if' gimmick at its core: what if England had sought a negotiated peace with Germany, what if Japan had not attacked Pearl Harbor, etc. But Kershaw is not a light-weight historian, and he uses the ...

Chihuly 365 Days
Other than seeing Chihuly's work in person (breathtaking!), this is the best book detailing his work, theory and progress I have purchased. The photos are clear and give a full view of the range of his talent and creativity. The explanations of how he created each type of form over the years are revealing and interesting. This is the definitive work for those wishing to meet Chihuly and his ...

An Impressive Display of Writing Genius
This is a very entertaining book and not difficult to read. Most book lovers will love the book. In my review below I do not give away the plot. That is left for the reader to discover. I read "Dubliners" and then read the present 250 page book as a warm up to ease into "Ulysses." This is a better book than "Dubliners" and we see the genius of Joyce without being intimidated - as the reader ...

Some people just don't get it...
Many of the negative reviewers of this book so clearly have their OWN agendas in mind that they simply miss the THREE POINTS Haught was trying to make in this concise little critical tome: 1) that the "New Atheists" aren't really so "new"; 2) that the "old" atheists were more insightful and much more consistent (in other words, the NA's are not very "good" atheists); and 3) That the New Atheists ...

Gingrich is improving as an author
I was hesitant to give a Newt "written" book another try after his first WWII book "1945". However, I was pleasantly surprised with this novel. It was a fast paced easy read. The size of the book and the easy text make it a good book to pick up and complete on the same airline flight.

If you want to be a woman writer, this is a must-read!
I really didn't know much about Virginia Woolf until 2005, when I ended up living with a dear friend who taught at a local college. Like most folks, I knew Woolf was a writer of the early 1900s and I'd seen the movie "The Hours" and that was the sum total of my knowledge. One day, my dear friend handed me this book and said, "You'll like this." I was intimidated. After all, it's Virginia ...
