A Chrysler Chronicle: One Man's Story of Restoring a Classic 1948 New Yorker

Excellent read for all classic car enthusiasts!
I gave out 2 copies of this book as a gift and kept one for myself. As an owner of a 1947 Chrysler, I can say this book reflects all the joy and pain I had in restoring my own vehicle. Very well written, many details to help others in planning and executing their own restoration, not only for a Chrysler, but other makes as well. Well done Dave Floyd! Keep Goliath rolling!

A Pivotal Period of History and a Pivotal Subject
While David McCullough's more recent biography of Harry Truman has received widespread recent attention, Robert J. Donovan's earlier biography published in 1977 has much to recommend it. Whereas McCullough's extensive volume covers Truman's entire life, Donovan zeroes in on the pivotal period of a pivotal presidency. Donovan begins as Truman takes over the awesome responsibility of the ...

An excellent narrative, honestly presented
General Douglas MacArthur was one of those war heroes about whom much favorable legend was created by his own concerted efforts. This book exposes MacArthur's megalomania, presenting much evidence that the tragedy of the 1950 Chinese counterattack could have been avoided had the book's subject been more objective and less interested in his image. MacArthur and his close assistants were informed ...

A good review of a sensible book
Astute students of history will notice that in 1949, the former British Mandate no longer existed. In its place was the State of Israel. Israel did not encompass all the land of the 1947 Mandate. Jordan illegally occupied most of the rest, a territory that became known as the "West Bank." That territory included the eastern part of Jerusalem. These facts could lead a student to wonder if ...

Finally, a satisfying history
I've always had an interest in the Berlin Airlift, but never could find a really satisfying history. The best read up until now was Leon Uris' "Armageddon". Finally, the story gets told in a most impressive and readable book. Andrei Cherny does a really great job of making the whole story readable and enjoyable. This will be the standard reference from now on. With a perceptive take on ...

The Bible for Students of Modern Korean History
I was an East Asian Studies (focus on Korea) at Harvard. Both Volumes on the Origins of the Korean War by Bruce Cumings are absolute prerequisites to understand and study this unfortunate part of Korean history. I note how some reviewers trashed the book because they think it is "revisionist leftist nonsense" - I believe it is a matter of the reader not liking what actually happened. Prof. ...

Careful historical research...
Almost six decades after the U.N. partition of Palestine, as Suzanne Gershowitz wrote, ascription of blame for Palestinian refugees still resonates in Israeli academic discourse. Following the lead of Avi Shlaim, an Oxford University historian and "new historian," post-Zionists have exculpated the Palestinians for heeding Arab calls to leave. Shlaim argued in a 1988 book that King Abdullah I of ...

Bringing a lasting access to Acebes's photographic artistry
The collaborative effort of Isolde Brielmaier (Visiting Professor of Art at Vassar College) and Ed Marquand (Director of the Hector Acebes Archive), Hector Acebes: Portraits In Africa, 1948-1953 showcases the photography of Acebes taken in Africa in 1948, 1949, and 1953. These black and white photographic images have justifiably been acclaimed as some of the most beautiful photographs of Africans ...

An Analogy to North Korea's Behaviors Today
As the year 2000 marks the 50th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War, this book is quite thought-provoking as it meticulously describes how President Syngman Rhee of South Korea struggled to ensure the survival and rehabilitation of his country in the closing days of the war and how he interrelated state security with the survival of his regime as his popularity declined in later ...

A not quite convincing second image analysis, but worthwhile
McCagg's book represents something of a paradox: a weird argument but a useful substance. The materials he presents and uses in his analysis are quite interesting and makes the book an important contribution to the history of Soviet foreign policy from the latter half of World War II into the early Cold War. The argument he makes is a rare case of a second image analysis, that is he sees the ...

Stalin's Purges: Numbers Alone Do Not Tell the Story
When the Second World War was over in 1945, First Secretary of the Communist Party, Joseph Stalin seemed to be at a personal peak of power. Despite monumental losses of dead Russian soldiers and civilians, Stalin had led Russia to a victory over Hitler and National Socialism that left him in control not only in Russia but of all of Eastern Europe as well. Further, because of his earlier purges ...

A significant addition to the history of the cold war.
Michael Haydock provides a significant addition to the history of the cold war. This book is a seamless review of the role Berlin played during the critical years that ran from the end of World War II until the fall of the Berlin Wall. Haydock mirrors Berlin against the larger global events of the period. The central focus of the manuscript is, simply, how a city the size of Philadelphia ...
