Careful historical research...
Almost six decades after the U.N. partition of Palestine, as Suzanne Gershowitz wrote, ascription of blame for Palestinian refugees still resonates in Israeli academic discourse. Following the lead of Avi Shlaim, an Oxford University historian and "new historian," post-Zionists have exculpated the Palestinians for heeding Arab calls to leave. Shlaim argued in a 1988 book that King Abdullah I of ...

No war [this time]
In the period of 1960-63, Jordan's future hung by a thread. The US and Soviet Union were jostling for advantage in the Middle East. Nasser in Egypt was proclaiming a pan-Arab alliance, deeply unsettling Israel. The author describes a complex web of events and the motivations of the major players. For the time, the Jordanian government might have fallen to pro-Nasser forces. Which could will have ...

The Great Steel Fleet-New York Central's Passenger Fleet
Geoffrey Doughty's book The Great Steel Fleet 1948-1967 is an outstanding example of research that follows its title. Mr. Doughty focuses on the passenger service of the New York Central Railroad from 1948 to its demise in 1967. He uses a combination of photos, personal experiences and manufacturers information to put together a comprehensive list of the storied livries of the New York Central ...
For the Land and the Lord: Jewish Fundamentalism in Israel

Revealing look at a dangerous political menace
A well-documented and revealing look at a dangerous political menace to Israel and to the Middle East, radical Jewish fundamentalists who preach racism and use terror and violence, a threat at least as scary as Saddam Hussein and Usama Bin Ladin, probably more so given the reality of massive American support for the State of Israel and the more informal, but equally important, support of ...

An Honest Account
Tom Segev gives an honest account of Israel's first days. One develops a clear understanding of the many challenges (including defense, absorption of new immigrants, and a decent standard of living for all) that faced Israelis and their government. After reading this book, one cannot but appreciate the tremendous contribution of Ben-Gurion's pragmatic leadership in ensuring Israel's survival ...

An excellent book that debunks the "official" story of Israel's founding
Simha Flapan who is an Israeli of the MAPAM party debunks some of the most common spewed out myths of how the state of Israel was founded. Using the documentary record and declassified diaries of David Ben Gurion, the truth behind what really happened becomes clear. A must for anyone who wants to know the roots of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Balanced and informative
This is the best book on the 1948 Israeli-Arab war. Morris has matured as a historian since his first book on the Palestinian refugees and puts various events into perspective. For example, Israeli behavior vis a vis the Arab population is seen in the context of fears created by the invasion of Palestine/Israel by the surrounding Arab states. The book is very readable except for places when ...

Extremely interesting documents from CIA and FBI on Che.
A great book documenting how the US spied on Che and what the CIA and FBI thought about him, Cuba and Latin America. Of all the recent books on Che this is the only one to reproduce authentic documents reflecting contemporaneous material. We could not put it down.
Ben Gurion's Political Struggles, 1963-1967: A Lion in Winter (Israeli History, Politics, and Society)
Zaki Shalom
Routledge
, 2006
An essential insight into the central figure in the modern history of Israel and Zionism, this book explores the years that built up to the Six Day War and details crucial issues and events the world is still grappling with. This book traces Daniel Ben-Gurion's waning years in Israeli politics. After his resignation from the office of prime minister in 1963, the 'Old Man' soon lost faith in his self-chose successor, Levi Eshkol, and ceaselessly ...

Moshe Leshem

Some useful material about Israel
This book truly misses the forest for the trees. There are plenty of facts. There's quite a bit of history. But the author fails to use what he writes to derive reasonable conclusions. Leshem seems to think that Israel is very important, but that Jews are in trouble as a people. And that everything will be better if only Israelis appease some thugs. But the author realizes that these thugs ...

A Useful Contribution to the History of Israel's Founding
Between 1947 and 1949, as mentioned by Suzanne Gershowitz from the American Enterprise Institute, United Nations decisions changed the shape of the Middle East. The vote to partition Palestine into both Jewish and Arab states led to the birth of Israel and, soon thereafter, the battle for Jerusalem. Mandel works to elucidate the role played by H.V. Evatt, an Australian diplomat in 1947 who ...

Essential history
Wow, one review here is from the "expert" Daniel Pipes who, after the Oaklahoma City Bombing, suggested in USA Today that the blame belongs to Muslim extremists. What a fascinating and disturbing ideologue. I can only suggest that the information here largely comes from from primary Israeli sources. Judge for yourself. I found it important.
Australia and Israel: An Ambiguous Relationship
Chanan Reich
Melbourne University Publishing
, 2002
On the surface Australia seems to have always been a close friend of Israel, but in fact this has often not been the case. This text rasies the fundamental question of commitment to ethical values versus the tendancy to appease bullies in international relations.
