The decency that lurks in all of us -- even in war
If Napoleonic warfare shattered concepts deeply rooted in the past century, this fact does not inavlidate reasons for studying warfare as waged in that earlier era, Col. Thomas E. Griess, of US Military Academy, wrote in July 1969. Griess, head of the Department of History at West Point, wrote the foreward to "The Art of War in the 17th and 18th Centuries" which analyses the tactics of King ...

How an institution recovered and perservered!
"A Return to Glory" by Bill McWilliams is 3 books in one. It is the story of West Point's tragic 1951 cheating scandal; Academy graduates in the Korean War, including a condensed version of the last battle for Pork Chop Hill; and the restoration of the Academy's honor system and football program/team in the years immediately following the 1951 incident. Weaved into the work is the ...

Classic Leckie
"Conflict" is classic Leckie. Written more as a newspaper account, it is more readable than a stadard treatise on the war. Leckie's inability to suffer incompetence and admiration for the common infantryman is evident in his writing, without the arrogance that Marshall often conveys. This work shows why Leckie was, and remains, one of the best war story tellers in hirtory.

Good coverage of the subject
This book provides exactly what a frequent reader of the Osprey Men-at-Arms series would expect to see in a book about the Korean War. Within the tight constraints of the format, the various ground combatants and the ground war are described nicely. Air and naval aspects of the war are not covered in the book. My only complaint with the book is that the illustrator does a nice job with ...

Both doctrine and practice covered--with the "official" omissions included
This Osprey Fortress-series book covers both doctrine and practice. It is often said that the infantryman uses his E-tool more often than his rifle. Illustrator Ian Palmer depicted company and battalion defensive positions, as well as details on individual positions for riflemen and heavy weapons. Some of these illustrations are the same ones used in US Army field manuals (both War Department ...
