Steinbeck Captures the Heart of an Immortal Lesson
This book is criminally unknown. In just under 100 pages, Steinbeck weaves the immortal truth that worldy wealth cannot guarantee happiness or joy into a classic tale of a South American native couple who discover the joys and woes of finding an incredible pearl. They first think that the pearl will change their lives (which is correct) by bringing them happiness and opening endless ...

A Classic in every respect
There are very few American novels that can be called a classic, but the trails and tribulations of the Jode family during the Great Depression stands at the pinnacle of 20th century literarute. Nobel prize winner for this his master opus, Steinbeck has etched in the minds of the American public in the 20th Century what Dickens did in the 19th. One of your best bets in the classics department. ...

After "The Confessions," maybe the best-ever 'autobiography of Faith'
Today I delivered a gift copy of this book to a widow, "Grace" whose husband had been my late father's closest childhood friend. A week earlier, Grace had asked: "Have you ever read Thomas Merton's SEVEN STOREY MOUNTAIN? I read it in 1953; and found it very moving. I'd love to find a copy and read it again." When I presented her with a new copy of this edition, I asked if I could read aloud ...

That the force that is nature will ultimately change those of us who are enthralled by it. Its not surprising tht the protagnist in "Into the Wild" gives up so much to live primtively in the northern climes of Alaska .. its Thoreau revisited. The author never fails to please those who understand his messages.

Well put together - very readable
Columbian drug dealors? Golf balls chipped in the dark? That's all over. Unless the author is making things up, we get a very believable scenario from O. J. Simpson's Lawyer - and he wasn't on the "Dream Team". The book is interesting for reference as to motivation, timelines, Prosecution gaffes, etc. But there is plenty of detail of events following the Civil Trial: where's all that money due ...

Thoroughly enjoyable
One of my favorite books this year. I fully expected to enjoy it after reading the entertaining account of the author's latest "humble quest" to follow the bible as literally as possible (also highly recommended!). And I was right - I loved the book, and when I finished it, I went into immediate Jacobs withdrawal, and had to look up his old Esquire articles and interviews to get my daily dose of ...

Inspiration for film makers
As has been mentioned, this is a memoir about how Robert Rodriguez made his film "El Mariachi". I just finished it and was thoroughly fascinated by it. This is not a technical manual (although there is plenty of technical knowledge and "pearls of wisdom" to be gleaned from it) so much as it is a motivational book. It is also a book about seeing a project through to its completion, regardless of ...

He really did it!
Some of the beginning seemed to justify the way he treated his wife. I enjoyed the book, but like so many others I was interested in the chapter about how OJ actually pulled it off. He really did it! The details say it all.

i lost a 100lbs. in 1 week. Just kiddin. A great book. The workout is insane and very intense if you do it right. You also find out you can do more than you thought you could. Funny thing is that you don't get over that initial workout pain because you seem to push yourself harder and harder.

Awesome
Mark Kurlansky's 1968 is a well-researched and surprisingly balanced account of 1968 and the preceding years. Kurlansky combines stories with accurate generalizations about the motivations of the time. He does not minimize the motivations, however. He recognizes the different movements and the history behind them creating a multi-faceted picture of the 1960s. The main reason I enjoyed this ...

As a huge Springsteen fan, I devoured this book and begged for more.
Dave Marsh is not what you'd call an unbiased journalist. Nor should he be. He is basically the official Springsteen biographer, and his previous books have documented his rise (the first book), then his popular explosion (his second book), which have been collated in the terrific "Two Hearts". Here, he provides a tour-by-tour analysis/memoir/scrapbook of the career of Bruce Springsteen. I ...

Memory Lane
This book of pictures was a wonderful walk down memory lane for me. At 16 I was to join the Kennedy campaign as a volunteer after the California primary. On the morning I was to depart, my parents woke me with the news of his shooting. This book, however, reminded me of the promise unfulfilled Robert Kennedy represented--how much better we would have been as a people, as a country, as a ...

Keep 'Em Coming
It's getting harder and harder to come up with new things to say that will convey how much I enjoy reading these old Peanuts strips. This comes from a period where I am less familiar with the strips themselves, so there are some surprises for me. In this volume we find the strips that will be the inspiration for the animated special, Snoopy Come Home, in which we find out Snoopy has an owner ...

Perhaps the Best Book on St. Padre Pio!
This is possibly the best book currently on the life of St. Padre Pio. It is very well researched and well written that you honestly get a true glimpse of the man in my opinion. The book was written by a non-Catholic which can dispel some people's fears that the book is a fanatical work to boost the Padre Pio simply because of his faith. After reading this book there is little way anyone ...

Excellent Book on the Legacy of 4/4/68
I remember, as a child, visiting my great-aunt and uncle in their mansion (they were millionaires) and seeing a magaizine whose cover depicted a watercolor of a burning city. Asking what was the reason for this, I was told that people had rioted after the murder of Martin Luther King, Jr. Fifteen years after this, I remember asking my great-aunt why there were no blacks who were members of ...

Journal of travel and research
This nonfiction book is an account of a research/specimen collecting trip Steinbeck made with his friend and marine biologist Edward Ricketts off the coast of Baja California in 1940. They rent a boat, a purse-seiner called the "Western Flyer," stock her with supplies, hire a crew, and set sail on the afternoon of March 11, 1940. The raison d'etre of the trip is collecting sea specimens, but ...

Steinbeck read right by Gary Sinise
Travels with Charley is one of my favorite books and one of the few that I have read over and over again. I want here to especially recommend the Gary Sinise reading of the book for Classics on Cassette. Sinise has played and directed in productions of other Steinbeck works, and he reads the book in an engaging manner that I suspect reflects his own love for the book. I have listened to part of ...

Help in Solitude
As someone who is beginning a life dedicated to solitude and silence, reading this book was like having Thomas Merton beside me as a wise friend, guide and mentor, showing the way.
