My go to book for fast everyday family meals
I'll start this review by saying I consider myself a little bit of a foodie. I have many cook books that cover all the basic types of cuisine we enjoy. Most of these cooks books have been used to execute elaborate dinner parties, to impress. But, when it came it cooking every day food on a budget, I was sometimes at a loss. I finally broke down and asked my mom for the Joy of Cooking for my ...

Detailed Portrait
This is an even handed, rich portrait of a very complicated young woman. I purchased the audio thinking it was a fluff piece I could listen to while working out, but found the book fascinating and was sorry when it was over. Tina Brown presents each of the major characters in this tragedy as multifaceted individuals, making this not the usual tabloid nonsense, but a sociological study of a very ...

Very good but not his best.
I liked this book very much. He's done better work but I still thoroughly enjoyed this. In my opinion if you like Dan Brown's writing you will enjoy this book.

Paint with Words
Gary Paulsen "paints with words" as he writes a descriptive story about a fifteen year old boy contending with his parent's divorce. This book is rivoting. The reader wants to read on as a young boy learns through discovery about how to survive in the Canadian wildernes. I read this book to my students and they were lined up in the library to check out Gary Paulsen books. Gary Paulsen writes ...

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize
I'm thrilled that Hass won it, as no one deserves it more. It's been a decade since his last book, and the contemplation of time and materials he experienced has constructed this continually delighting and surprising book, which I'd put up there with Field Guide and Praise as my three favorite books by Hass, who has become one of our most vocal ecological poets.

Not a fish in a barrel, but definitely a hypocrite in a habit
When I met Christopher Hitchens at a conference in '99 I had just read this book. He said that he was surprised that no one had written it before because the hypocrisy and sanctimonious false modesty of Mother Teresa was so obvious to demonstrate. She was so sanctimonious she didn't try very hard to cover her disingenuousness, but like anyone doing bad or hypocritical things in the name of the ...

To understand, rather than be understood.
The book is perfectly titled. Mother Teresa's biographical information is minimal and the book does not canonize her. Apart from introducing the thoughts of volunteers who work with the Missionaries of Charity, her own words are few. What we find are simple views of a simple path, and beauty in simplicity. This is not the story of a famous nun, it is the story of a way of seeing ones world and of ...

Creating the World
This volume, "de Kooning:an American Master" by Mark Stevens and Annalyn Swan is a masterpiece itself. The couple took ten long years to research and write this hefty biography of Willem de Kooning and along the way give us an inside look at the creation of the world of American contemporary art from the post World War II New York period forward. Before that revealling section of the book we ...

The Dilemma of God's Silence
In this book of lectures delivered at Yale Divinity School, Taylor states that the task of a preacher is not to give answers or advice but to "usher people into the presence of God who may or may not answer." She states if we have a God who always speaks, who's never absent or silent, perhaps we are worshipping or speaking to an imaginary God. "Only an idol always answers," she writes. ...

Boyd: The Fighter Pilot Who Changed the Art of War
An excellent read. As a former Naval aviator and now an employe for Lockheed Martin Aeronautics where the F-16 is built, I can attest to Boyd's drive to build the best lightwight fighter in the world. He was certainly correct in his methodolgy to build somethng that the rest of the world did not have. Sales prove that. But the information in the behind the scenes tactics that Boyd employed ...

Something Beautiful for God
In this book it describes how Mother Teresa established her Missionaries of Charity and how they served the sick, suffering and dying in Calcutta. She gave everything she had and her life was totally dedicated to her mission, her calling and those who were hungry, homeless, and very sick. This book makes me realize that everything that I have today is a gift from God! Great book.

Ginsy's Collected Poems
I just finished reading Ginsberg's collected poems, 1947-1997 -- fifty years and over a thousand pages of poetry. My overall impression is that he was probably the kindest, most moral member of the beat generation. When the other beats were penniless & borrowing money, Ginsberg was the one they borrowed money from. Corso would steal Ginsberg's manuscripts and sell them to used book dealers to ...

"Danse Macabre" should have been subtitled "Horror Fiction in Cinema, TV, and Books: 1950 - 1979" so that Stephen King's fiction fans wouldn't accidentally pick it up and start reading it. They might be horribly disappointed. At what is supposed to be the climax of this nonfiction book, at the sentence in which the author is summing up everything he has been trying to teach us for 397 pages, ...

Fascinating portrait of interesting times
I read in the New York Times that Deborah Baker was Barack Obama's editor for his memoir, so I was curious to see if she was as good a writer as she was an editor. I'm happy to report that she is an excellent writer. I was thoroughly engrossed by A BLUE HAND. To be honest, I was never a big fan of the Beats in general, but Ms. Baker's book reads like a novel and I find her portraits of the ...
