National Electrical Code 2008 Handbook (National Fire Protection Association//National Electrical Code ...24 reviews
NFPA

Delmar Cengage Learning, 2008

Very Helpful
As a general contractor, I need to keep up on all the codes, electrical included. This book, while more expensive than the regular NEC 2008 code book provides narrative to explain the intent of a particular code item and also provides many color pictures to better clarify the code item. I find it very useful since if you have ever read a code book, they are not the most clearly written books out ...

Office 2008 for Macintosh: The Missing Manual16 reviews
Jim Elferdink, Elferdink Jim

Pogue Press, 2008

essential reading
"Office 2008 for Macintosh, The Missing Manual" is just that: the manual you should have gotten with the product. They say that MS Word is the most complex program ever, and we've managed to navigate a few of its complexities thanks to this book. It's paid for itself many times over. Plus, some of the writing has a humorous edge that makes all that painful learning more palatable.

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services10 reviews
Brian Larson

McGraw-Hill Osborne Media, 2008

A book that may have really saved my job.
What a life saver! I'm a software developer in a small shop and our biggest client is a large law firm with LOTS of data and users hungry for easy to read reports reflecting said data. None of us have much experience with SQL Reporting Services as most of our experience for reporting is in Crystal Reports. I've heard of SSRS but until recently I didn't have much experience using it. Our ...

National Electrical Code 2008 Tabs10 reviews
NFPA

N.E.C. tabs
This is a great help in locating chapters and topics that you are researching. It would be difficult to use the N.E.C. without them. I highly recommend them.

Windows Server 2008 Inside Out13 reviews
William R. Stanek

Microsoft Press, 2008

Stanek is the #1 Windows authority for a reason and this book is excellent.
Newbie pointer: Ch. 3 & 7 are all about server and server core. Ch. 3 tells how to install both. Ch. 7 tells how to configure at the gui or command line. There's literally hundreds of command line examples throughout the book too. Plus once you install the tools on another box, like it says, you can manage using gui from another box. Why this is the best: William Stanek is well known for his ...

National Electrical Code 2008 (National Fire Protection Association National Electrical Code)25 reviews
NFPA

Delmar Cengage Learning, 2007

Good.
Clear, concise, and easy to read. Strange to say but I wish there were more pictures, however, books like this usually don't have pictures so that's not expected.

Windows Server 2008 Administrator's Pocket Consultant (Pro - Administrator's Pocket Consultant)14 reviews
William Stanek

Microsoft Press, 2008

The Best Admin book for Windows Server 2008
Definitely the best daily admin book I've found. Like all Stanek's books, it's a gold mine of information. The details and advice are spot on. You really can't go wrong with this one. Also recommend Stanek's excellent Windows Server 2008 Inside Out. The two together have answered my every question.

Windows Server 2008 Unleashed6 reviews
Rand Morimoto, Michael Noel, ...

Sams, 2008

Incredible Resource!!!
I went to the Windows 2008 launch event and got excited about migrating our company to Windows 2008, but wanted to get a third party book to help me better understand the REAL features, functions, and experiences of the product (rather than Microsoft's rendition of it). I jumped on Amazon and searched for a book, and this Windows 2008 Unleashed book was already rated with a couple 5-stars, so I ...

Visual Basic 2008 Programmer's Reference (Programmer to Programmer)13 reviews
Rod Stephens

Wrox, 2008

Best Wrox book yet!
I have bought hundreds of books in the last 25 years and have been programming in VB since Nantucket Clipper in the DOS environment faded (after dBase II), but this just may be the best comprehensive book yet on Visual Basic! I buy from Wrox, Microsoft, Murach and many other fine publishers, but this is truly a great tool to have in your arsenal. I very seldom write reviews, but I felt like I ...

Kalen Delaney, Paul S. Randal, ...

Microsoft Press, 2009

Still the true Bible on SQL Server internals
If you're looking for a step-by-step kind of book about SQL Server 2008, look elsewhere. That is not the intent of this book. If you want to truly know what goes on under the hood of Microsoft's new powerhouse database, get this book now. I've ready every copy of Inside SQL Server from 6.5 through to 2000. And I mean every page. I've read Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2005: The Storage Engine ...

Murach's Visual Basic 200823 reviews
Anne Boehm

Mike Murach & Associates, 2008

A thorough, readable text for beginners or veterans
Murach's Visual Basic 2008 is a nicely paced resource with a ton of well-presented information. My college is using it as the textbook for its VB curriculum, but I'll be certain to keep the book within reach whenever I program in VB. Specific information is easy to find and implement, and while it's a dense cover-to-cover read, it's much more manageable than other programming books of its size ...

McGraw-Hill Osborne Media, 2008

Great overview of a huge subject
This author sets out to walk you through a huge subject, which is Microsoft's BI stack, in a single volume and does an admiral job of introducing the key concepts and components that a Microsoft implementation requires. It should be considered a starting point from which much is to be gained. Experienced BI developers will learn about the new features in SQL 2008. He also spends an entire ...

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Administrator's Pocket Consultant8 reviews
William R. Stanek

Microsoft Press, 2008

Another excellent reference and resource
I must say I am very impressed by this book. William's SQL Server 2005 book was excellent, but this book is even better and packs in even more information. Came in handy during our upgrades and I reference it all the time. I would highly recommend this book to anyone upgrading from previous versions and any current administrators. As a reference manual it can't be beat.
