Stopped at Stalingrad: The Luftwaffe and Hitler's Defeat in the East, 1942-1943 (Modern War Studies(Paper))55 reviews
Joel S. A. Hayward

University Press of Kansas, 2001

A Great Book
This book is a treasure. Saying it deals with just the Luftwaffe effort does not really address the scope of the book. In addition to the author's fabulous treatment of air operations, it has some great stuff on naval operations in the Crimea. This book is an absolute MUST for your WWII library. This guy is a lecturer at some college in New Zealand. Get him to some University in the USA!!

Personality Radio45 reviews
Dan O'Day

O'LINERS / L.A. Air Force, 2000

Air Talents! You NEED this book!
Personality Radio will quickly become more important to you than a good pair of headphones or digital editing. The advice and instruction are of the utmost value for rookies and veterans alike. The book is well written and simply put...a great read! More importantly, you will find inspiration and energy in this book. I read a small portion every day before I go on the air to draw on this ...

A Bridge Too Far [Paperback]71 reviews
Cornelius Ryan

Charter, 1999

Excellent Introduction in this Important part of WW2 History
I can't say it much better than the previous reviews have already. I wanted to read something on this subject and was led to this book. I couldn't have asked for a better introduction to the topic. Broad in scope yet detailed in its descriptions of the soldiers, units, and battles in this massive offensive. This is an excellent jumping off point to begin studying the Battle of Arnhem. Well ...

Everything a guy needs to know
The amount of info packed into this guide is amazing! Everyone's library should include it. Yes, in the age of the internet you can google the info - but what happens when your internet connection is down, or you are working in the yard?

Downfall: The End of the Imperial Japanese Empire40 reviews
Richard Frank

Random House, 1999

Excellent in-depth defense of why the atomic bomb was needed
Richard Frank conclusively shatters a number of myths about the end of the Pacific side of World War II. First, Japan was NOT ready to accept unconditional surrender, even with the caveat of the preservation of the Japanese throne, until after both bombs were dropped. Frank uses extensive declassified transcripts of Ultra (military) and Magic (diplomatic) U.S. codebreaking to get members of ...

Stick and Rudder: An Explanation of the Art of Flying65 reviews
Wolfgang Langewiesche

McGraw-Hill Professional, 1990

excellent
i haven't started flying lessons yet, but this book is excellent and I'm sure it will help a lot when I do start flying. It explains everything very well and clearly.

Miracle in the Andes: 72 Days on the Mountain and My Long Trek Home101 reviews
Nando Parrado, Vince Rause

Random House Audio, 2006

Amazing
I couldn't put it down after the first 50 pages. This is an amazing true story of a life changing experience. Tragedy, brutal conditions and the best and worst of raw emotions. If you've seen the movie and read Alive, this book is still worth a read. I'm sure every one of the survivors has a different perspective and take on the experience of some aspects of the events.

Fate Is Hunter P94 reviews
Gann

Fireside, 1984

Read through in few sittings - -
This is one of those books that has a sneak ending - best appreciated by reading through at a steady rate (which only makes sense once the climax of the book is revealed). The stories, anecdotes and tales seem almost trite and mundane - but build to the showdown, for me a life lesson. Flying is revealed for the joy it is, for its wonder, the thrill of a good landing when one has fought the good ...

A Question of Honor: The Kosciuszko Squadron: Forgotten Heroes of World War II50 reviews
Lynne Olson, Stanley Cloud

Knopf, 2003

*Forgotten?
I found this book to be a highly entertaining and informative read. The exploits of the 303,in particular, are thrilling. I do feel that some of the momentum is lost when dealing with the political machinations of Churchill and Roosevelt, however less exciting, it is very important that these be revealed. The authors did an outstanding job of this. I've seen reviews that say this is done "out of ...

The Air I Breathe: Worship As a Way of Life51 reviews
Louie Giglio

Multnomah Books, 2003

Simple, Yet Profound
After hearing Louie Giglio speak recently, I was interested to see what he had to write about worship. This little book is quite simple, but Louie's insights into what true worship is all about are quite profound. One could read this entire book in one sitting, but I found that I had to keep putting it down so that I could think about the content. Louie's definition of worship is probably the ...

Base 66: A Story of Fear, Fun, and Freefall30 reviews
Jevto Dedijer

iUniverse, Inc., 2004

Thank you Jevto
Really Jevto. Thank you for sharing the amazing story of the beginning of this incredible sport. Beeing myself skydiver, I had shivers reading it. A lot of feelings of my first jumps and fears came back. It's exactly what I try do describe to my Whuffo friends what this sport is about. Friendship, Brotherhood, Passion, Thrill, Adrenaline, Concentration, Precision. I cannot do more than ...

REACH FOR THE SKY30 reviews
PAUL BRICKHILL

FONTANA PRESS, 1981

Reach For The Sky
I read this book when I was 9 yrs. old and now that I read it again I think that this is one of those books that I will keep and read over and over. This is a riveting story that makes you feel like you are there experiencing the events yourself.

Bury Us Upside Down: The Misty Pilots and the Secret Battle for the Ho Chi Minh Trail34 reviews
Rick Newman, Don Shepperd

Presidio Press, 2008

Required Reading
As a Vietnam veteran and a student of the war, I have read literally hundreds of books about every facet of the U.S. involvement there. This book is absolutely one of the very best I have read. I doubt that it was intended to make an anti-war statement, but as it lays open the emotions of both the pilots and their families back home, the reader can't help but wonder what was accomplished by all ...

Wings Of Morning: The Story Of The Last American Bomber Shot Down Over Germany In World War II33 reviews
Thomas Childers

Da Capo Press, 1996

Exceptional
Through the years, I've read a number of histories and memoirs on the Eighth Air Force in World War II. Many of those volumes, published over 6 decades, were more authoritative, complete, wide-ranging, and fact-filled than this volume. Yet if I had to recommend a SINGLE book to give someone the flavor of all of those experiences represented by all those many books, this would be the one. ...

Low Level Hell40 reviews
Hugh Mills

Presidio Press, 2000

As True As It Gets....
I was a Crew Chief on an OH-6A and sat behind my pilot each and every time the aircraft left the ground. We flew many a mission for Captain Mills and you will not find a truer account of the life of an Aero Scout Pilot and his Crew Chief as you will in his book Low Level Hell. He was there, we were there, and when you read the book YOU will be there! An excellent account of what we went through ...

When the Air Hits Your Brain36 reviews
Frank T. Jr Md Vertosick

Fawcett, 1997

"Neurosurgeons do things that cannot be undone."
Originally published in 1996, "When the Air Hits Your Brain," by Dr. Frank Vertosick, is a mesmerizing insider's look at "an arrogant occupation" whose practitioners operate on the spinal cord and the human brain ("a trillion nerve cells storing electrical patterns more numerous than the water molecules of the world's oceans"). A neurosurgeon must be supremely confident in his ability to get the ...

Better Basics for the Home: Simple Solutions for Less Toxic Living38 reviews
Annie Berthold-Bond

Three Rivers Press, 1999

Terrific better Basics
This book is filled with natural and non-toxic cleaning products, personal care products and more. I have made a number of cleaning potions from Better Basics and am loving the way my house smells when I clean it! Meaning...instead of the old days using harsh chemicals, my home smells like almost nothing--just clean! I was going to post a review for Annie Bond's Home Enlightenment: Practical, ...

The All-American Boys36 reviews
Walter Cunningham

I Books, 2004

A book that takes risks
The space race of the 1960's was a crossroads in time that will never be repeated. Walt Cunningham had a crow's nest view of that period. As a member of Apollo 7, the first Apollo mission and the first successful flight after the catastrophic Apollo 1 fire that almost disbanded the space program, he was able to see the inner workings of the American space program. He has recorded this ...

How to Grow Fresh Air: 50 House Plants that Purify Your Home or Office38 reviews
B. C. Wolverton

Penguin (Non-Classics), 1997

Fabulous
Not many products both clean the air and are beautiful. How to Grow Fresh Air explains how houseplants do just that. Beautiful book, well written with plenty of information, this book is wonderful.

Fighter Combat: Tactics and Maneuvering (New Edition)35 reviews
Robert L. Shaw

Naval Institute Press, 1985

Excellent Text Not For The Casual Reader
This book is a serious educational tool for modern fighter pilots. I tried reading it in high school when I thought I wanted to "grow up to be a fighter pilot." The best thing about it is that I learned that being a fighter pilot requires a lot more knowledge of math and physics than I'd ever imagined. Real fighter jocks have to be a great deal smarter than they are portrayed in movies. The ...
