Too Much Reliance on SMIT
I know that SMIT is 'the thing', but in my opinion, this, as well as other books on AIX should concentrate first on making sure that people can do without SMIT if they have to. You never know when it will assemble a command erroneously, or it might be down.

AIX 5L Administration
The book presents an excellent systematic presentation of AIX administration. It is written in a refreshing style that is not found in typical AIX documentation.

In-depth AIX internals details - getting out of date
Am very pleased with this book. Refer to it quite often whilst writing C/C++ for AIX. It is aging fast though. Was written for AIX 3.2, current version is 4.3 (Jan-2000). Treat it as a solid "backgrounder" but prepare for all sorts of changes in the newer AIX's. Would definately purchase the update if author felt like creating one.

Excellent
This is a no nonsense handbook for the System Administrator and novice as well. A good basic understanding of UNIX is required, but references to commands are right at your fingertips. Thank you Frank... now write one for HP-UX

Delivers as promised
I'm writing this review because I think the 1-star review below is unfair to the author. The various diagnostics tools are well explained and a good methodology is also given for using them. Possible bottlenecks and explained in detail; methods to detect them are given and remedies are proposed. Getting into more detail would be very difficult, since every AIX system is different. Using this ...

Good Book for Administrator
This book is organized very well. When I have problems with the AIX system, I can quickly find the solution if the book provide solution. I do my job well in the company. Thanks.

Too many mistakes
I am only to page 50 and this book has already completely disappointed me. I cannot even count the number of spelling, grammar, and layout mistakes. The book frequently refers to the incorrect figures, and even when one finds the correct figure, often the command shown in the figure will be different than the text describes! I believe the book is also using the wrong acronyms in some ...

Good book
This book is packed with lots of useful information. It is targeted for a UNIX sysadmin who is switching to AIX. If you are new to the UNIX this book will not be a good place to start. However the language is clear and if you do not know something you can usually figure what to look for in a general UNIX book to get a necessary background.

boilerplate scripts
This is a great book to get started and understand some fairly advanced techniques for AIX (like 3rd party printer setup). I especially liked the boilerplate scripts and configuration files provided on diskette (I think all RS/6000s have a diskette drive). This shell code has probably saved me over a hundred hours of development time for defining profiles and building menu scripts, etc.

Very basic concept of Unix, and Aix
This book gave me not only how to do in aix, unix, but why the way unix should be or should work. There are so many unix books with full of how-to-related infomation, but there is no other book that explains why in a simple way of explanation. This book really helps me out to start studying unix, aix. And this should be read by all unix users and admins to get a nice foundation of unix, aix.

Die Autoren legen in diesem von Praxiserfahrung geprägten Werk ein breit angelegtes Fundament durch eine treffsichere Vermittlung von Kenntnissen, indem neben die unverzichtbaren theoretischen Grundlagen immer wieder ...
