Fun Read!!
I started this book last night and couldn't wait to get back and finish it today. The concept of reading a book with just letters did not (initially) appeal to me and I doubted that you could get good character development. I was so wrong! I loved the first part of the book immensely and it weakened just a tad at the end but it was a lovely story with a wonderful ending. I loved it!
Anathem
Neal Stephenson
William Morrow
, 2008
Anathem , the latest invention by the New York Times bestselling author of Cryptonomicon and The Baroque Cycle , is a magnificent creation: a work of great scope, intelligence, and imagination that ushers readers into a recognizable—yet strangely inverted—world. Fraa Erasmas is a young avout living in the Concent of Saunt Edhar, a sanctuary for mathematicians, scientists, and philosophers, protected from the corrupting ...

Once again, Michael Moore exposes the truth of this election, and throws the punches many Democrats are afraid to throw. Every American concerned about the future of the country needs to read this book before November 4th.

Bacevich Nails It!
In this critique of American citizens, Bacevich takes a hard look at the citizenry's role in the current economic, political, and military crisis. The author is a retired colonel, which means I give a lot more credence to what he has to say. In fact, the gravitas between his advice and that of many others is a world apart. I was pleased to see that he believes our misguided strategies ...

Greg Mortenson brews a lesson for us all
By now, Greg Mortenson is a household name in parts of the world where central heating and air conditioning, superhighways, high definition television, and PCs are virtually unknown to the average citizen. Three Cups of Tea is a masterfully written memoir of his experiences building schools and supporting the disenfranchised in Pakistan and Afghanistan--and much more. It is a call to arms for ...

Barack Obama is an inspiration to everyone, regardless of your political affiliation. This should be required reading in schools across America.

You Didn't See or Hear This On the News Programs
"The War Within" is Woodward's 15th book, and his fourth about the Bush administration. I received an advance copy. Woodward interviewed President George W. Bush twice, and he interviewed Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates. I've noticed that in all of Woodward's books about Bush, he seemed to be full of praise for Bush when ...

The Dark Side: The Inside Story of How The War on Terror Turned into a War on American Ideals

Jane Mayer
Doubleday
, 2008
An important book for all Americans
Jane Mayer has done a masterful job in chronicling a dark chapter in American history - one in which we lost the moral high ground, saw our ideals badly compromised and, indeed, violations of the important right of habeas corpus. Abu Ghaib and Guantanamo will be remembered, unfortunately, long after the American prisons are gone and it will take considerable effort to repair our reputation. Jane ...
American Wife: A Novel

Curtis Sittenfeld
Random House
, 2008
A thought provoking read.
"American Wife" is a huge, juicy, wonderful novel. Obviously based on the life of Laura Welch Bush, Sittenfeld extrapolates from Bush's biography a "back story". It's probably wishful thinking that makes Sittenfeld have her Laura Bush/Alice Blackwell character do in the last chapter the one thing that the real Laura Bush has never done in "real life". But if Sittenfeld makes free with the ...

The Host of Humanity
Stephenie Meyer's The Host: A Novel is a fantastic science fiction novel for even those who do not read science fiction. While Meyer creates another world to immerse her characters in, the storyline is believable and captivating. Melanie Stryder, her brother Jamie, and Jared Howe along with all of humanity are thrust into a fight for their way of life and their humanity in Meyer's first attempt ...

"Must Have"
A definite "must have" book for any student in a counseling program. Even if not "required", this book makes writing reports so much easier because then you know EXACTLY what is required for deifferent diagnosis. I suggest all counseling/psychology students buy this book as early on in their studies as possible.

David Sedaris

Sedaris is Sedaris
Sedaris is Sedaris in this wonderful collection of stories. One thing I like about this collection is that the author, who is about my age, is aging in his writing. As hilarious as his stories about his childhood and young adulthood are, he has become more introspective and quirky, just like the rest of us. His ability to look at and experience the world in everyday life, and present it to us ...

Beautifully Written...Thought Provoking
I devoured this book. The prose is gorgeous. The story is both controversial and thought provoking. Even by today's standards, it is a story that will have many wagging their tongues. Yet, I came to sympathize and care deeply about the main characters, even if I didn't always agree with the decisions they made. It provoked me to think about women's roles and choices, and how far we've come. ...

Great read and hard to put down!
I bought this book as part of my coursework in Public Health Nursing. It is a wonderful book. It speaks to our general lack of cultural awareness from the medical community standpoint. It also opened my eyes to a strong and brilliant culture (Hmong). I am glad that my instructor recommended this book.
