80% of the way there.
This is an impressive compilation. For a one-volume commentary on the United States Constitution, this book achieves its purpose. It is written on the high-school level, with a USA Today-type layout of images and text, sidebar vocabulary and definitions, and boxed "For further consideration" essays that round out the discussion of the ideas. Clearly popular writing, Linda R. Monk also makes ...

Approaching Perfection; Incredible Annotations
First: Nabokov is a fierce talent; he writes, transcending language, with the whole literary tradition a pun's breath away. Greatest stylist of modern times, etc. Lolita needs no introduction: if you are here, you know. The Annotated Lolita (2nd edition) also defies easy description. It is incredibly rare for two things to come together so marvelously: 1) A work of Lolita's breadth and ...

Well Organized
The information is concisely presented without going into a lot of detail. However there is certainly depth. Good cross-referencing is a key factor in my decision to recommending this great study bible volume.

A League of Her Own
This is a fine edition and value, including a helpful preface introducing the author and novel as well as an appendix (the "annotated" part) with explanations of terms, places, and designations for non-Londoners along with identifications of literary, political and historical allusions for readers who could use a little extra help. Anyone who has read James Joyce's "The Dead" will recognize ...

If you want to be a woman writer, this is a must-read!
I really didn't know much about Virginia Woolf until 2005, when I ended up living with a dear friend who taught at a local college. Like most folks, I knew Woolf was a writer of the early 1900s and I'd seen the movie "The Hours" and that was the sum total of my knowledge. One day, my dear friend handed me this book and said, "You'll like this." I was intimidated. After all, it's Virginia ...

Couldn't have passed my Art Content Praxis without this book!!!
I bought this book to review for the Art Content Praxis. It's been about 20 years since my art history classes so I definitely needed a refresher. Although, I did remember a lot and reviewed other books, this book put me over the top. It's fast paced and easy to read! Short highlights to remind you of things you may have forgot and adds what you may have missed.

An insightful, sensitive reading.
The idea of Virginia Woolf's fiction being read aloud effectively has struck me as an impossibility. The very interiority of Woolf's style seemed to suggest that readers hear the narrative voice within themselves. This reading proves me dead wrong. Virginia Leishman's reading--and interpretation--added much to my passion for a novel I have always loved. Readers--and listeners--new to Virigina ...

Interesting and Hard-to-Find Content
This Bible has a lot of content that is a little hard to come across, and to me, that is what makes it so interesting and worthwhile. First of all, the "Revised Standard Version" has been, for the most part, abandoned in favor of the newer "New Revised Standard Version." However, this older version definitely has its own merits. As I understand it, it is the only version of the Bible to be ...

Great book.... misleading title
This is certainly an excellent book, but it is not the annotated Ulysses that you expect from the Pengiun or Oxford editions. That is, the actual text of Ulysses is not in this book, only lengthy and fascinating information about Ulysses itself. So, I would recommend it, only the title is deliberately misleading. I thought I was getting an annotated version of Ulysses, not a book on annotations ...

The kind of book I wish I'd written
Some books entertain, some inform; some confirm what you already knew, some make you change your mind about something. But then there are some books that just make you think "wow! I wish I'd written that". For me, Charles Petzold's The Annotated Turing falls into that last category (as well, of course, as the informational category). It's a book worth reading not only for the topic itself but ...

Women against war
I gave this book 5 stars, not because I really liked it, but because it's interesting. Three Guineas is VW second book that is an argument and not fiction (the first is a room of one's own). It's about how women can help prevent war, and it says a lot of stuff, one of the things being to link male vanity to aggression. It's controversial, and a lot less pleasant than a room of one's own. ...

Excellent background information
The notes on the opposite page of teach page of the book are very helpful in understanding the exact meanings and the connotations of many words and phrases that were in use in the period when Jane Austen is writing. The historical background of that era and especially the explanation of the social and cultural life is very illuminating. I hesitated to get this edition of the book, and I am so ...

Great version of the books missing from my other Bibles
This version of the Apocryphal books, traditionally found in the Septuagingt and "Catholic" Bibles is an easy read and contains many helpful tools. The introductions, maps and other background helps are indispensible in creating context for the reader. The inclusion of chapter and verse markings (which my KJV of these books lacks) is also useful in making notes and references. And above all, my ...
