Great coverage of all of northeast Asia
I don't understand why some reviews were not so good. I thought this book did an excellent job of covering the history of East Asia (mostly Korea, China, and Japan). There are some good photos here too and I liked how there was some analysis on the relations of the countries and not just bland statements or repetitions of other history books (ie-there's some good writing on how Japanese history ...

Good Insights and Data -
The book is a collection of essays written by Roach over the past three years reporting how the Asia story has played out to date, and how it looks for the future. Most of the book focuses on China, providing a wealth of background for understanding Roach's recommendations for the U.S. and China, and the direction of China's leadership. Nearly 80% of China's GDP goes to exports (30%) and ...

Valuable and Important Book
Jihad by Ahmed Rashid provides an explanation for the rise of militant Islam in Central Asia. I purchased this book because I enjoyed another of Rashid's works, Taliban, and because it was on sale. Within the first few pages, the significance of Rashid's book is obvious. For one, the author is an objective journalist (that term should be redundant but, sadly, it isn't) with first-hand experience ...

Objective and truthful
If you really want to know about Afganistan and why the Taliban emerged, you must read this book. Why were these people needed, why were they welcomed? It gives you a lot to think about, on why the west ignores alarm signs until it is too late, and too many economic interests are involved, which do not have in mind the welfare of other countries and their people.

INSIDE CENTRAL ASIA: A POLITICAL AND CULTURAL HISTORY OF UZBEKISTAN, TURKMENISTAN, KAZAKHSTAN, KYRGYZSTAN, TAJIKISTAN, TURKEY AND IRAN is a 'must' for any library strong in Asian history and culture, especially as these regions are typically given only cursory attention in favor of Japan, Korea and others. The one the only: Lonely Planet!
The Lonely Planet Guides are consistently the best travel guides for backpackers and other budget travelers. Their Southeast Asia guide is superior to all the other ones I have seen because it includes Myanmar (Burma)--along with a discussion of whether travelers should travel there or not due to the human rights boycott. Some of the details that you might have in 10 separate country-specific ...

This is a brilliantly innovative and highly readable account of the "world" that stretched from the Middle East to East Asia for a millenium before Europe began to sail the globe. Describing a series of contrasting individuals who travelled great distances across kingdoms and cultures, the author takes us vividly through a fascinating kaleidoscope of landscapes, economies, and spiritual terrains ...

Probably the best for use in the field.
A really great work! I wish I had this book last year when I made a stopover at the Bangkok Airport going to and from Germany. Even though I was unable to step outside, I did some birdwatching from the large window overlooking the beautiful spacious garden outside. At that time I used a hardback edition of Craig Robson's "Birds of Thailand," that I purchased at the bookstore within the airport. ...

Lonely Planet, THE only guide for adventure travel!
I have visited 42 countries, mostly "adventure" style and Lonely Planet is THE guide to use! Their books are compact, concise and authoritative. I have often visited countries (usually less developed countries) for months at a time where I take only one carry on bag. As you can imagine I need to have a lot of information at my fingertips in a form that's small, lightweight and full of ...

I cannot imagine anyone visiting Central Asia without this guide. I used it on a one-month trip around Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan and found most of the information to be remarkably complete and accurate. The authors obviously did not travel overland between Khojand and Osh via Batken but even the few sketchy references were enough to see me through. I saved $20 by hiring a taxi only ...

A great scholarly introduction to the history of Asia
I read this textbook in a junior-level undergraduate course on the history of Asia. Rhoads Murphey's text certainly has a tall task in covering 4,000 years of history in severally culturally distinct regions in Asia, but I thought he succeeded. Another reviewer has pointed out that Murphey does a very good job of focusing on themes and meaningful interpretation of historical trends. I agree, ...
