The Astrolabe5 reviews

Janus, 2007

Fantstic *Modern* Astrolabe Book
First, if you're interested at all in astrolabes, this is the single best, most informative, most comprehensive book I've found. It's clear, concise and well illustrated. I'm very tempted to use the chapter on stereographic projections in my GIS classes. It doesn't have many illustrations of historic instruments, but that's not it's focus. You can find those in the Time Museum or Western ...

Time Museum Catalogue of the Collection: Time Measuring Instruments, Part 1 : Astrolabes, Astrolabe Related ...1 review

Time Museum, 1986

Premier Astrolabe Reference
If you buy only one book on astrolabes, this should be the one. The stated purpose of this book is to record the astrolabes in the collection of the Time Museum but it is far, far more. It is a wonderful book, beautifully presented and has by far the best historical section of any modern reference.

Astrolabes at Greenwich: A Catalogue of the Astrolabes in the National Maritime Museum

Oxford University Press, USA, 2006

The astrolabe is one of the most intriguing of all early scientific instruments. Invented by the greeks, the design and construction of the astrolabe remained largely unchanged for hundreds of years as it passed through the Arabic, Indian, Persian and Medieval European cultures. The astrolabe was the starting-point for the design of many other types of calculating and observing instruments in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. With 53 ...

Georg Hartmann

J. Lamprey, 2002

This is the book to have if you're interested in making your own portable sundials
If you're interested in making portable sundials or astrolabes, and if you're afraid of trigonometry, but good at geometry, this is the book for you. It's a translation of a classic old treatise that tells how to lay out the hour lines using geometry. The book seems to be out of print, but if you post a review here and let me know you'd like it, I can call the translator and ask him if he ...
