Agnes Martin: Writings3 reviews
Agnes Martin

Hatje Cantz Publishers, 2005

A wonderful voice behind the paintings
How many great painters have been eloquent on their work or methods, or, for that matter, on art or culture in general? In recent times, only Ad Reinhardt compares with Agnes Martin, who has that rarest of gifts among the non-literary, a voice. In a series of articles, some of which were apparently talks given to art students, she delves into consciousness, creativity, judgment, personal ...

Agnes Martin: Paintings and Writings
Agnes Martin, Arne Glimcher

Pacewildenstein, 2002

The oldest surviving member of the Abstract Expressionist generation, Agnes Martin long ago succeeded in emptying the canvas of ideas and allowing it to fill with pure emotion. Reproduced alongside texts by the artist, the 15 paintings from 1999 that are reproduced here are the apotheosis of what Martin considers the positive in life. Introduction by Arne Glimcher. 11.25 x 11.25 in. 14 color illustrations

Agnes Martin: The Nineties and Beyond1 review
Agnes Martin, Edward Hirsch, ...

Hatje Cantz Publishers, 2002

--------------
This is a fine collection of the later work of Agnes Martin. Her work is a great example of how an action becomes something other. No documentation will ever suffice for seeing her work in person, but as these things go this book captures some of her subtleties. I turn to this book at times when I need to be reminded that we can make tender references to perfection.

Vortex Of Silence
Agnes Martin, Doris von Drathen, ...

Charta, 2004

German art historian and critic Doris von Drathen has here produced a collection of 24 texts on 24 of the world's famous contemporary artists. In it, she proposes nothing less than a new method of art criticism: an anti-criticism that goes above and beyond aesthetic categories, and against the colonization of art. Paradoxically, the more famous an artist, the more their works seem obscured by inflexible classifications, wild misreading, and ...

This first book looks at the late nineteenth century through the beginning of the twentieth. Care and preservation of these drawings ...

Singular Forms (Sometimes Repeated)
Agnes Martin, Drew Daniel, ...

Guggenheim Museum, 2004

Singular Forms (Sometimes Repeated) examines the impulse toward reduction, restraint, and lucidity in postwar art. Drawing on the Guggenheim's exceptional holdings of minimalist painting and singular sculpture, Singular Forms begins with Robert Rauschenberg's historic White Painting (1951), a stark, monochrome canvas. This seminal work establishes twin trajectories in the development of contemporary art: the elimination of all extraneous details ...

Agnes Martin: The Islands
Agnes Martin, Heinz Liesbrock

Richter Verlag, 2005

Description: The Islands--a 1979 group of 12 identically large square paintings--is a body of work especially suitable for gaining insight into the modalities of the visual in Agnes Martin's work. An element that is common to all the canvases is the matte white color that absorbs the surrounding light but only partially radiates it back, as well as the structure of fine horizontal lines drawn in pencil. The reproductions of Martin's work in this ...
