The World Almanac and Book of Facts 200916 reviews
World Almanac Books

World Almanac, 2008

I buy this every year
for my daughter, but I think I may look at it more often than she does. Even with the internet it's handy to have. Can look up things while reading in bed!

Batman: The Killing Joke188 reviews
Alan Moore, Brian Bolland

DC Comics, 2008

Short read but an essential one
What is there to say that hasn't already been said? The art and writing are top shelf and it comes in a grade A package. The only thing to deter you from reading this story is that it contains some mature imagery, so it's not for the kids.

The Wealth of Nations (Bantam Classics)23 reviews
Adam Smith

Excellent
This book is filled with great information you will find useful as well as having to find new things you never knew about. I will recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

The World Without Us257 reviews
Alan Weisman

Picador, 2008

the perfect gift
Both my husband and I read this book with avid interest. It caught our eye in an airport bookstore as something to read while traveling. The reader is immediately engaged by the remarkable way the facts are presented through the past, present, and likely future. I found some of the information stunning (such as the mass of floating plastic in the Pacific), and all of it very informative. We ...

Hello, Cupcake!: Irresistibly Playful Creations Anyone Can Make117 reviews
Alan Richardson, Karen Tack

Houghton Mifflin Co, 2008

My cupcakes sold well at the bake sale
I really enjoyed the ideas in this book. Many of them were simple enough that I, a non-baker, could use them. I did visit their website and made the 'acorn nut' cupcakes also. They were the most popular. My mom made the acorn cupcakes for her garden club meeting and they were the talk of the meeting.

Watchmen657 reviews
Alan Moore

DC Comics, 1995

Stunningly realistic
As a fan of comics that are actually relatable I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys smart, down to earth and realistic literature. While it takes some context education to really identify with the atmosphere in the story (the Cold War, for those who weren't around during those days) but this eloquent story is amazing. Questions are posed to the reader about right and wrong, what it means to ...

V for Vendetta5 reviews
Alan Moore

Vertigo, 2008

V for Vendetta
Here am I again, confronted with classic, one of those comics that changed the way people looked at the media. On of those works that showed that comics and heroes aren't about flashy superpowers or great feats of strength, evil enemies and demonic characters with want for total destruction. This one showed that comic book can be intelligent, thought-provoking and in a way brave - in not choosing ...

How to Cook Everything Vegetarian: Simple Meatless Recipes for Great Food101 reviews
Mark Bittman

Wiley, 2007

Great Purchase
First, I must admit, the book is a bit overwhelming with the amount of pages it holds (it's pretty thick). But at the same time, that does mean you are getting so many recipes! It's terrific, such a variety of foods. What I like is it is both for vegetarians and vegans (if a recipe calls for the use of milk or cheese, he gives you alternates right there for vegan use, though a good amount of the ...

No Limits: The Will to Succeed9 reviews
Michael Phelps, Alan Abrahamson

Free Press, 2008

Stands on Its Own
First, if you've read Michael's autobiography he published shortly after Athens Olympics, this isn't book's sequel. It doesn't claim to be, but you may think it is if you look through chapters' headings, as they're based on all events Michael swam in Beijing (autobiography as it is published now stops pretty much shortly after Athens). What that means is that some of the stories are repeated, but ...

The Calorie King Food & Exercise Journal20 reviews
Alan Borushek (Author)

Family Health Publications, 2006

Valuable Tool
I find this journal to be of great help. I have tried several but find this one fits into any plan I follow and its small size makes it portable. With this tool I am less likely to cheat or sabotage myself. Edith

How To Cook Everything: Simple Recipes for Great Food375 reviews
Mark Bittman

Wiley, 2006

My fave!
I love this cookbook and I've used it at least weekly since I got it, about 10 years ago. Just tonight, I made the recipe for potato pancakes (to go with his sweet-and-sour brisket recipe from NYT). And, yes, it was a pretty simple recipe: grated potatoes and onion, eggs, matzoh meal, salt and pepper. But that is exactly why I love this cookbook -- most of the recipes are simple! And Bittman ...

Bridal Bargains, 9th Edition: Secrets to Throwing a Fantastic Wedding on a Realistic Budget331 reviews
Denise Fields, Alan Fields

Windsor Peak Press, 2008

Bridal bargains--great advice
This book was well written and very informative. Our daughter lives on the other side of the country from us, and is planning to be married this coming year. She would like to have her wedding where she lives. We ordered this book to update our knowledge about wedding planning, and found that this book provides a lot of helpful advice. We sent a copy to our daughter. She was so happy to get such ...

The Uncommon Reader: A Novella95 reviews
Alan Bennett

Picador, 2008

"Once upon a time ...
"It was the dogs' fault." The Queen (aka "One") met Norman Seakins and books in a van parked near the garbage bins. One "read of course, as one did, but liking books was something she left to other people." One is thorough: "Books, bread and butter, mashed potato - one finishes what's on one's plate." Norman becomes her amanuensis (and more); he "was unaffected by her because she ...

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Vol. 1120 reviews
Alan Moore

America's Best Comics, 1999

Excellent
I'll be honest. I saw the movie before I read the book. But the movie doesn't hold a candle to the book. I did like Wilhelmina Harker's portrayal in the movie, but in all cases, the book was far superior to the movie. I really enjoyed the art and storylines, and am sad there are only two books to this series, aside the Black Dossier.

The Spies of Warsaw: A Novel75 reviews
Alan Furst

Random House, 2008

Credit where credit is due
I have to say that I much enjoyed this from Alan Furst, and that I think we have to allow a writer a little space to write differently, to change. This is not Dark Star, with its terrifically effective weight of many episodes to bring out very much of its characters, and of its years. Yet The Spies of Warsaw is sharp, very clear and telling, and has much effect in a shorter novel. A ...

Alliance (Star Wars: Legacy, Vol. 4)1 review
John Ostrander, Omar Francia, ...

Dark Horse, 2008

Another Great Legacy
I'll admit it. I wasn't a huge fan of Legacy #1. Cade Skywalker was, well, underwhelming, but for whatever reason, I recently bought Legacy #2, After reading #2, I went out and snatched up #3 and #4. I found #4 was exciting and, like certain books in the NJO and LotF series, I was struck by some poignant moments that recalled the desperate heroism that marked the fall of such types as Chewbacca ...

Moloka'i121 reviews
Alan Brennert

St. Martin's Griffin, 2004

Remarkably Moving Historical Fiction
After having read the exploitative and shameful "non-fiction" work "The Colony," by John Tayman, I was a bit leery of Alan Brennert's "Moloka'i," a wholly fictional account of the one-time leper colony on the Kalaupapa Peninsula of Moloka'i. I am very glad, however, that I did read Brennert's amazing novel as it gives a far more accurate portrayal of the time and the place and the people than ...

Tales from the Perilous Realm50 reviews
J.R.R. Tolkien

Houghton Mifflin, 2008

Early Tolkien Writing
You need to know that I'm a Tolkien fan who reads the Lord of the Rings trilogy every year and always discovers something new. I've also read The Hobbit, The Silmarillion and The Children of Turin. Tales from the Perilous Realm is enjoyable reading based upon its own merit but what I find particularly fun about it are the connections with Lord of the Rings. It is not intended as a part of the ...
