a poetic work
This book nicely balances the humor of the "dog's-eye view" with genuine respect for our canine friends. Armstrong manages to appreciate both the heroic working dog and the fiesty house poodle. I found some of the descriptions of the sea-faring dog to verge on the poetic and made me misty-eyed with respect and admiration. Nicely woven into the tale are ruminations on WWII and the french ...

Two Grounded Astronauts Achieve Their Dreams to Fly in Space
This review is based on the original (1994) hardback edition. This book is much more than a history of the space program from about 1957 to 1975. It includes the inspirational determination for Shepard to fly again and for Slayton to fly even once. I had the pleasure of meeting Alan Shepard and getting his autograph on this book. The book captures the intensity of the space race. When Shepard ...

Lonely Planet Southern Africa
This book give a great overview of Southern Africa, history, what to see and what is a must see. Having never visited Africa, this was my book to read prior to the trip. I have watched several of the movies they suggest in the book and they are excellent. Lonely Planet rocks.

A concatenation of wondrous stories
An Honor Book for 2005, "Whittington" is, at the very least, worthy of this placement. (The 2005 Newbery Award Book is "Kira-Kira," a book I have not read and cannot make a comparative judgment.) "Whittington" is a special book for several reasons (to be outlined here). I find the stories to be a concatenation (series of stories linked together), skilfully linked. But don't trust my opinion. ...

A Story of a Proposal to Bomb Japan First
A fun book that plays 'what if' with Claire Chennault, the Flying Tigers and the attack on Pearl Harbor. The basic concept being discussed was a proposal made by China to increase the American aviation presence in China from a hundred P-40's to 350 fighters and 150 bombers. This force was to be used to bomb Japanese forces in China and perhaps even in Japan. There was apparently some ...
