Have Fear, The Scarecrow Is Spotlighted Here
In this collection, we get to know the master of fear a little better, The Scarecrow. Just like The Greatest Joker Stories Ever Told was released in 1988 in anticipation of the '89 Batman movie featuring The Joker, Scarecrow Tales was released close to Batman Begins, which features The Scarecrow and helped introduce him to the general non-comic reading public. The good thing about that is the ...

Graphic SF Reader
One of the oustanding X-Men storylines. This collects all the appropriate X-Men and X-Factor and New Mutants and Thor and Power Pack issues that you need to make up the story. If you prefer color to the black and white version in Essential X-Men, this is the one that you should get. Wolverine vs Sabretooh, no holds barred. Lots of things change for the X-Men out of this story.

A really good Apocalypse's story
This story has a lot of fights and drama, this tale is why I began to read X-men, the plot is similar to the cartoon serie's episode "one man's worth", but more interesting, the art is really good, and the pages has a lot of color for an old reprint, I think it is a must read.

Graphic Novel junkie
Ok, ok, I should say comic book junkie, because that's what they were called when I first started reading them some decades ago. This whole series of Essential X-men books are a fun read unless you get bogged down in details. I never did, I just enjoyed reading them. This is a great book. Enjoy

A world without Superman just sucks
JLA: THE NAIL is a 1998 Elseworlds offering. For those not in the know, DC's Elseworlds line, much like Marvel Comics' What If series, takes superheroes out of their mainstream continuity and tweaks them into a new context and into an alternative history. This allows comic book writers and artists the freedom to dream up dynamic (even disturbing) twists that the corporate high muck-a-mucks ...

'A testament to love and healing'
Alan Davidson is an inspirational writer as well as a keenly tuned guide to better health (physical and mental) through his detailed and well-illustrated exercises and modes of meditation. What sets Davidson apart starts in his introduction: he shares a moment from 1987 when he sat in a waiting room for the results of his HIV test. His thoughts and observations of the others in that frightening ...

Cool Alternate Reality Tale!
I disagree with the one-star scrooges! This book is a nicely crafted alternate reality tale that spins out of HOUSE OF M. In fact, the two spin-offs I have read, the other being HULK, were BETTER than the mini-series event they were tied to. Yes, there's Captain Britain on hand, but he's a part of the X-Men mythos going back TWENTY years via the x-book EXCALIBER. Plus we get Psylocke and Rachel ...

The REAL X-Men return!
Having read the X-Men sporadically since Claremont left in '92, I thought I'd give this a shot with his return. In only a few pages the magic was already back in the X-Men. His style of gearing each issue as if someone is picking up X-Men for the first time was a welcome style since its been so long for me. I picked up Grant Morrison's first few issues and was appalled to say the least. I ...

More good X-fun from Claremont
This second volume of legendary X-scribe Chris Claremont's return run on Uncanny X-Men finds Wolverine encountering Marvel's newest (and hottest) character in the past few years while investigating a murder: the X-23. In the meantime, Storm, Nightcrawler, Bishop, Marvel Girl, and Wolvie are trying to track down Sage, and in the process discover a new Hellfire Club, and boy do they have an axe to ...

An overlooked gem from a chaotic period in comics' history.
Alan Davis is a longstanding artist (and writer) in the comic book industry, having gotten his start with Marvel UK three decades ago. He is probably best known for his collaborations with Chris Claremont on the original "Excalibur", first as artist, and later returning for a run as the writer as well. "Excalibur" was a light-hearted take on the superhero genre, and this Davis creation, ...

Visionary author, poor packaging
Marvel's line of hardcover Marvel Visionaries books seem like a good idea, but there are a few that while they display the highlighted author's talents, they are poorly assembled. This hardcover TPB, which focuses on legendary X-Men scribe Chris Claremont, is sadly misassembled thanks to only featuring single issues of his various runs on different series' instead of full storyarcs, which really ...

actioned packed goodness...
If this is not the best volume of Avengers Assemble, it is certainly one of the best if you are interested in action. Clearly, the action in this collection is varied, and involving an extended cast of Marvel favorites from the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, the X-Men, The Thunderbolts, the Shiar empire, Ego the living planet, the Silver Surfer, the Grim Reaper, Kang the Conqueror and Ultron to ...

Davis revisits an old, abortive project, with fun results.
Alan Davis' original "Clandestine" series was a 90s project for Marvel UK that focussed on a family of superpowered heroes who, contrary to expectations, had no real interest in being superheroes, save for the two youngest, Rory and Pandora (children who adopt the names of Crimson Crusader and Imp). Davis had only really got things going when the collapse of Marvel UK (part and parcel of the ...

Alan Davis Reigns Supreme!!
I don't read as many comics as I used to back in the day, (60's and 70's), but when Alan Davis illustrates such exotic locales such as the lost savage land of Kazar - I must have and read it! Alan Davis's reincarnation of Killraven was utterly fantastic, his writing skills and fabulous, beautiful artwork shining bigger and better than ever before. And it shows in this blazing mix of savage ...

Asgardian adventures, mutant massacres, and more Chris Claremont classics!
I can thank the X-Men for my present love of Marvel comics. When I was ten, the superlative X-Men animated series premiered on Fox and my good friend Nick offered to share with me his almost exclusively X-Men comic collection (which was begun by his father in the late 70's). I wasn't able to collect many comics myself until I discovered the Essential series five years ago and made the Essential ...
