Common Edible and Poisonous Mushrooms of New York2 reviews
Alan E. Bessette, Arleen R. Bessette

Syracuse University Press, 2006

to die or not to die
Finally, a field book for mushrooms tuned to the local fungi. I have a "field" book that weighs 11# and has more than 1200 mushrooms in it. It covers two continents and is so comphrehensive you can't rely upon it for anything. It came from the publishert with six slipped in corrections, two of which involved deadly shrooms. This gem covers my region, only the safest choices, and is clear ...

Edible Wild Mushrooms of North America: A Field-to-kitchen Guide9 reviews
David W. Fischer, Alan E. Bessette

University of Texas Press, 1992

Excellent Book For Novice Edible Mushroom Hunter
This is a concise easy to use book for people just starting to hunt for edible mushrooms. It concentrates extensively on the edibles, and look alike poisonous. By eliminating 1000s of other mushrooms it is great for identifying the finest edibles. It makes a great companion to a more all encompassing publication. The recipes I've tried were good also.

North American Boletes: A Color Guide to the Fleshy Pored Mushrooms (North American Boletes)7 reviews
Alan E. Bessette, William C. Roody, ...

Syracuse University Press, 2000

Best Reference Guide
This is the best reference book I have on Boletes. Because it just covers boletes it is a fairly comprehensive guide, and the book is so easy to use. The keys make it easy to identify just about any Bolete. The descriptions are in alphabetical order as are the pictures so it is easy to flip through to find what you want. The pictures are incredible! The price was well worth it for me.

Mushrooms of Northeastern North America8 reviews
Alan E. Bessette, Arleen R. Bessette, ...

Syracuse University Press, 1997

A Fungus-Viewer's Pal
This is a gorgeous book with BIG pictures which help in precisely identifying a found fungus. With the current wet, hot summer we've been having, mushrooms have been popping up overnight for weeks, and this book has been instrumental in letting us zero in on what we are seeing. Highly recommend.

Wildflowers of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont (Wildflowers of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont)1 review
Arleen R. Bessette, William K. Chapman, ...

Syracuse University Press, 2001

easy to use photos
This book has photos of around 350 wildflowers with a paragraph describing the pertinent details of each. They are arranged by color and are very easy to use. If you are looking for help separating extremely similar species, or want range maps, this is not the book for you, but for putting a name to the flower you just found it is excellent.

Wildflowers of New York in Color1 review
Valerie A. Chapman, Alan E. Bessette, ...

Syracuse University Press, 1998

not as comlpletely illustrated as I had hoped for
We have been searching for a guide to wildflowers specifically for New York State and this is the first such book we have found. While it does show and describe at least 350 varieties, we have found 2 wildflowers so far on our own property that do not seem to be in this book. The color photos show the flowers of the plant clearly but we feel that there should have been more effort to include ...

Great field guide to mushrooms for dyeing
This book does not give much information on how to dye with mushrooms, however, it is the absolute best field guide to mushrooms used for dyeing to date. Each mushroom is described in detail, with an accompanying color photograph and the colors that it yields. This book is a must have for mushroom dyers.
