Must Christianity Be Violent?: Reflections on History, Practice, and Theology

Excellent Discussions of Christians and Violence
This timely and helpful work is the result of a conference at Wheaton College (Illinois) in 2000. The goal was to investigate and apply the Christian ethic of peace and how it has been compromised by believers over the centuries. The triadic focus of the book allows the reader to consider historically both Christian complicity and prophetic action regarding the First Crusade (Joseph Lynch), the ...

Sipping as a humble bumble bee . . .
Despite the fact that there are now 279 English translations of the 'Bhagavad Gita' in existence, Alan Jacob's own recently pubished edition is one of the most beautiful. A transcreation rather than a translation, the author has endeavoured to preserve the essence of the nondualist teachings (also known as Advaita Vedanta) interwoven in Hinduism's best known spiritual text as well as introduce ...

Timeless Wisdom
In the manner of Shankara, who codified the Upanishads, and in more recent times, David Godman, who has anthologised the teachings of Ramana Maharshi, Alan Jacobs has produced an essential guide to the principal teachings of Ramesh Balsekar, one of the world's leading exponents of Advaita. In recent decades, the spread of nondualist philosophy - the belief that all of the manifest world stems ...

All there is is That
`Upanishads breathe throughout the sacred spirit of the Vedas!' wrote Arthur Schopenhauer, `How every line is full of sure, definite and harmonizing significance! How out of every page confront us deep, original, elevated thoughts, while a higher and highly sacred earnestness vibrates through the whole!' Alan Jacobs has produced yet another literary masterpiece in his transcreation of the ...

Aphorisms for every day living
It is said that the collected sayings of Marcus Aurelius are the best treatise on practical philosophy ever written. Living in Rome at a time when Stoicism and the legacy of Socrates' wisdom were resounding through the marketplace and Senate, Emperor Marcus Aurelius composed a series of meditations, designed to help people get through the stresses and strains of daily life. Previous ...

Narnia for all
There are many books about magic worlds, some even excellent. I love the works of E Nesbit, Edward Eager, J. K. Rowling, J.R.R. Tolkien and others, and enjoy rereading them from time to time. It's very pleasant to hang out with old friends and reground for an hour or two; but ah, there's nothing like the thrill of falling back into Narnia. As "The Wind in the Willows" was for C. S. Lewis, Narnia ...

Simply Outstanding!
This is a damn fine book! Dr. Jacobs writes from a vast reservoir of subject-knowledge--from Aristotelian ethics through Augustinian theology, Dickensian sentimentalism to Bakhtinian hermeneutics--and takes us into an extended meditation as to what truly charitable reading might be. Poets, philosophers, and novelists come into vital dialogue about the intersection of love, justice, and knowledge ...

Quest for the Self
`The poetry of mysticism,' wrote Evelyn Underhill, `might be defined on the one hand as a temperamental reaction to the vision of Reality: on the other, as a form of prophecy. As it is the special vocation of the mystical consciousness to mediate between two orders, going out in loving adoration towards God and coming home to tell the secrets of Eternity to other men; so the artistic ...

The inside is as interesting as the cover design
As a new mother, I have time only for short jaunts through a book. This one was perfect and worth the time I spent on it. I appreciated Alan Jacobs' discernment in quoting (and modeling his style after) time-tested writers; despite the subtitle, he avoids the wearisome tendency to employ endless examples from pop culture in making his points. When he does mention the present age--such as in his ...

an act of intellectual courage
Three out of the five blurbs on the back cover of Original Sin manage to import some wariness over the book's content into their glowing recommendation of the book's execution. Ron Hansen acknowledges that the "even-tempered" Jacobs gives "even the most disagreeable voices their say." Publishers Weekly gives the "brilliant" book a starred review but manages to damn its subject despite this high ...

A Very Good Selection, Handsomely Presented
After searching long and hard for a quality edition of the Upanishads, I found this little abridgement to be the best of its kind. The ten texts that make up this selection, are, as advertised, the most consequential for Hindu philosophy, and the hardcover volume itself is quite handsome, and comes complete with a ribbon bookmark. Highly recommended.

Rich and expansive
This collection lives up to the title, providing a rich and expansive corpus of poems that leads one on a journey of discovery -- through the eyes of poets across the ages and continents -- of that which resonates across time and space at the core of all human spirits. A joy to give away as well as to keep. The organization according to time eras juxtaposes that which is culturally familiar ...
