An AMAZING book!
Wow. I am so glad to have bought this book. I cannot put it down! At first I must admit I was intimidated by its size as well as the period it was written. I find that many period books are really dense and difficult reads. Not this one at all!!! Easy to read and such a gripping tale! It draws you in and you do not want to put it down. I am so glad that I am reading the unabridged version because ...

Action-Packed Read
I chose to read the abridged version of this novel first even though I also own the unabridged version. I know that other reviewers have posted that this version is missing many scenes, but it really didn't seem to matter. The story is wonderful and so action-packed that I couldn't put the book down. If you've seen the movie, you don't know the whole story. There is so much more to it and a movie ...

Porthos Eats His Way Through Europe
It is truly amazing how many people don't have any idea that the Three Musketeers appear in more than the novel of the same name and "The Man in the Iron Mask." I must admit that for many years I was in that category myself but I was absolutely delighted to find that their adventures continued in this book and I must say that I found the exploits in this book to be almost as thrilling as the ...

The Three Musketeers (Wordsworth Classics)4 reviews

A Pleasant Surprise
The only reason I picked up the book was because it was one of "those" books in the school library. You wanted to read it for the points, but everybody who picked it up gaze up and put it back down. *I* even tried to read it once and gave up. But I'm always up for a challenge. The next year I checked it out and informed everybody I knew that I was going to be one of the first people in our school ...

The Count of Monte Cristo: Abridged Edition (Dover Value Editions)
Alexandre Dumas père

Dover Publications, 2007

Falsely accused during the final days of Napoleon's reign, Edmond Dantès is imprisoned in the bleak Chateau d'If. After a hair-raising escape, he launches an elaborate plot to extract a bitter revenge against those who betrayed him. Amazingly based on actual events, Dumas' labyrinthine tale is popular fiction of the highest mark.

Signet Classics, 2006

"Meung, a pretty market town on the Loire..."
In the very midst of the last Harry Potter being published, I picked up this title from my library, mainly because of the attractive cover and easy-to-read design and typeface. I also wanted to see what a great classic felt like. I was highly rewarded. Certainly this amazing and ground-breaking work is dated in places, particularly when men are disposed of without the least thought and women ...

ABRIDGED version of the classic story, good resources in back
I am reviewing the Pocket Books Enriched Classics version of the novel The Count of Monte Cristo. At about chapter 30, I was hooked on the story and reading reviews and doing research on it. At that point I discovered the Pocket Books version is an ABRIDGED version with about 70 chapters. The real version has around 117 chapters. This frustrated me immensely because nowhere on the Pocket ...

Barnes & Noble Classics, 2004

A must read!
Simply put, I love this book. What a great book to introduce to students interested in historical adventures, and this one is spot on. It's one of the great adventure novels, with lots of action, well-written characters, important issues, and can be read quickly because of its compelling storyline. Also, there is the deception factor, which makes for great storytelling, but in this case the ...

The Man in the Iron Mask (Oxford World's Classics)75 reviews
Alexandre Dumas père

Oxford University Press, USA, 1998

No One Can Write a More Thrilling Story than Dumas
Having just spent the last few months reading all five books in the Three Musketeer series, the following are my suggestions. 1. Read all five books in order. The Man in the Iron Mask is probably enjoyable on its own but reading the four books that proceed it help place the story in its proper context. Think of the Man in the Iron Mask as the dessert in a five course meal. Dessert is great ...

The Man in the Iron Mask (Penguin Classics)5 reviews
Alexandre Dumas père

Penguin Classics, 2003

The Man in the Iron Mask is a Swashbucking Classic Romance by the prolific Alexandre Dumas pere
The Penguin edition of "The Man in the Iron Mask" is taken from the larger novel "Vicomte de Bragelonne" about the son of the famous musketeer Aramis. Dumas wrote countless potboilers for French periodicals but a few of his works have become immortal. This is especially true of the trilogy of French muskeeters during the reigns of Louis XIII and Louis XIV. The novels are all episodic making the ...

The Count of Monte Cristo (Barnes & Noble Classics)4 reviews
Alexandre Dumas père

Barnes & Noble Classics, 2004

Best Book I've Ever Read
Alexandre Dumas is a pure genius! He ties you up in the plot so well and his thrilling tale will not let you down. I only wish that the translator had not left out the certain parts he had. (Fortunately, there's an explanation of the events that are left out). I highly recommend this book to EVERYONE!

The Three Musketeers: all six novels of the series in a single file, with active table of contents1 review

B&R Samizdat Express, 2007

no table of contents
This is just about the kindle edition, not the 3 musketeers, which I love. This edition was really really inexpensive, which is very nice. Be aware that there is no active table of contents which makes it really hard to move around in this huge book (6 books). Otherwise, no problem.

The Count of Monte Cristo8 reviews
Alexandre Dumas père

Puffin, 2000

Dumas'Classic Tale Of Intrigue And Adventure
Alexandre Dumas, author of "The Three Musketeers" and the "Man In the Iron Mask", has given the literary world the adventure novel, forever bringing it to the level of the classic. The Count of Monte Cristo is mainly a story of revenge. The Romanticism in which the novel is characterized and the Napoleonic France for the setting, sets the mood for this nearly psychologically thrilling story that ...

The Women's War (Penguin Classics)2 reviews
Alexandre Dumas père

Penguin Classics, 2007

A Surprise
I didn't realize this book existed and what a delightful adventure in reading it was! I am very impressed with the dialogue, especially. It is full of witty repartee and I actually found myself chuckling at the tongue-in-cheek humor as well as the clever sarcasm it contains. It actually reads like a script at points and being a visual person I could 'see' it all happening. I would heartily ...

The Count of Monte Cristo1 review

B&R Samizdat Express, 2008

The Story is excellent, and this is the Unabridged edition
This is the only Unabridged edition of The Count of Monte Cristo I have been able to find for Kindle. It looks like a public domain copy that has been adapted, but it is formatted well. It doesn't say who the translator is. It has the whole 117 chapters. It is worth the 99 cents, if you want the unabridged version. I think if you read the abridged you are missing out on some great parts of a ...
