The very classic
Excluding Knuth's opera (another dimension), this (AHU) is about the other and only renowned classic algorithms book, deseverdly I'd say, together with Cormen-Leiserson-Rivest's (CLR) "Introduction to Algorithms". With the difference that the first and only edition of AHU has been written 16 years before the first (of the two) editions of CLR. The two books are quite different in the language and ...

Computer Science
The book, Theory of Parsing, Translation and Compiling, by Alfred V. Aho, and Jeffrey D. Ullman, is intended for a senior or graduate course in compiling theory. It is a theoretical treatment of a practical computer science subject. Since computer science is an ever changing area of study, this book emphasizes ideas, rather than specific application details. The algorithms and concepts presented ...

A real tour de force - brilliantly written...
SIX stars at least. And this book, of all things, was my introduction to discrete maths - what a blast! Here is the unsullied theory of formal languages - perhaps you should read Chomsky for a week or two just before embarking on this. All is explained though. The way that null productions make parsing so difficult is explained - the treatment of grammars as formal mathematical objects is shown ...

Amazing little language and book that will grow with you
In Unix today, several scripting languages exist: awk, perl, tcl and python. Awk is a small, easy-to-learn, yet powerful programming language, and is language of choice for quick, think- and analyze-on-the-fly tasks. This book is written by the inventors of this wonderful language. It provides an excellent introduction to the language, with many practical examples for day-to-day use. Over many ...

One of the few really good books
It is really a great book, especially for self study. Unlike newer variations on the same theme that are more concerned with stuffing a book with something that makes the table of contents look attractive, this one really covers things in detail. Very well written too. Books like that re-kindle the '...love of study, a passion which derives fresh vigour from enjoyment...' as Gibbon put it. ...

The new cover is awesome! Long live the Purple Dragon!
The CGI cover looks great! I only wish it stretched along the spine of the book like in the previous editions.

A JEWEL
Perfect book. Nice and small. You can buy it cheap too, it's old. But it's full of the meat and potatoes, no fluffy Java source code. Sure, it uses Pascal, but it's not that hard to understand Pascal code even if you never programmed in Pascal (me neither). What matters is the discussions behind the scenes. It covers the whole range of what you should know and it's concise. They don't write books ...

Excellent book, even for experienced readers
Overall, I think this book is an excellent book that anyone serious about computer science should own. I think that this book is good both for those new to computer science and those who have been involved in computer science for several years. For those new to computer science, I would not use this as a first book (this is made clear in the introduction, as well). The expectation is that the ...
