How I Saved Hanukkah2 reviews
Amy Goldman Koss

Puffin, 2000

Writing Witty Enough For An Adult
I found this story to be witty and full of humor. The story of Marla practically mimicked my life in a small town with no other Jews. The unknown holiday I celebrated and the massive overly merchandised holiday of my neighbors and friends was exactly what I felt. Marla's character was me, seventeen years ago.

The Girls65 reviews
Amy Goldman Koss

Puffin, 2002

It sticks with you...
I read this book when I was 11 years old. I am now 18 and remember it to this day. This is an extremely powerful book that I would recommend to any middle school girl. Middle school is a very difficult time for girls socially and this book acts like a mirror. Whatever experience you had/have it made me feel like I was not alone. And at that age no girl is ever alone. If you have young daughters I ...

Kailey (American Girl Today)2 reviews
Amy Goldman Koss

American Girl, 2003

Wonderful Book!
I have read this book twice already and I must say that is is as delightful to read it the first time as it is the second. Kailey loves the ocean whether she's spying on tide-pool creatures or splas-crashing though waves on her boogie board, there's no place ten-year-old Kailey loves. She and her best friend Tess, feel totally lucky when they find out a resort-mall-movie multiplex is "Coming ...

Where Fish Go In Winter (Easy-to-Read, Puffin)2 reviews
Amy Goldman Koss

Puffin, 2002

Good writers can offer facts and poetry without nonsense!
Each of Amy Koss's poems quickly catches the young reader's attention: Would clouds feel fluffy,/ Soft and grand,/ If I could touch them/ With my hand? Her "emphasis on end rhyme" provides the kind of gentle draw into poetry that children need. My children clearly grasp each poem's content, asking to hear one or another at bedtime. Koss does not "attempt" explanations she nails them. ...

The Compleat Squash: A Passionate Grower's Guide to Pumpkins, Squashes, and Gourds8 reviews
Amy Goldman

Artisan, 2004

The only Pumpkin Bible
This is a very visually attractive book, with superb photographs, but this is not just for the coffee table. For the devotee who grows pumpkins, all the information needed is there, down to conditions and seed sources for an amazing selection of varieties. For the cook, there are some unusual recipes, but also the eating quality of each type of pumpkin. Essential, this. Some are delicious, others ...

Side Effects4 reviews
Amy Goldman Koss

Roaring Brook Press, 2006

One Girl's Battle with Cancer
From the author of The Girls (a realistic look into the inner workings of an all-girl clique) comes a novel about an almost-fifteen-year-old who is diagnosed with lymphoma. The once-healthy Izzy is suddenly hospital-bound. The faces of the nurses, doctors, and counselors who surround her blur as she undergoes chemotherapy. Meanwhile, her mom is a mess, her father is fairly steady, her little ...

Poison Ivy2 reviews
Amy Goldman Koss

Square Fish, 2008

Gives "Mean Girls" a run for its money!
Amy Goldman Koss gives us a great story told by eight different points of view. In a government class at school, a group of girls goes on "trial" for their bullying of a classmate they call "Poison Ivy". This story will give you the eight different points of view from each girl on the same event. Very interstingly puts you into the minds and perceptions of each narrator. See how differently ...

The Heirloom Tomato: From Garden to Table: Recipes, Portraits, and History of the World's Most Beautiful Fruit11 reviews
Amy Goldman

Bloomsbury USA, 2008

For heirloom tomato lovers
This book is all that it claims. For those wanting to grow heirloom tomatoes, it can be confusing as to which have the attributes one is seeking (sweet taste, good for sauce, good for munching, etc.) This book takes the mystery out of heirloom tomatoes with great descriptions of each tomato's attributes. The book also has beautiful photographs of each tomato so it is easy to visualize how they ...

Smoke Screen5 reviews
Amy Goldman Koss

Turtleback Books Distributed by Demco Media, 2001

LYING DOESN'T GET YOU ANYWHERE
I found this book to be very helpful for kids because I learned that smoking is very bad for your health. Plus I enjoyed the characters especially Mitzi Burk and Mike Humphrey. Her problems are very big and the lesson is that lying doesn't ger you anywhere. So that's why I gave it five stars.

Melons for the Passionate Grower9 reviews
Amy Goldman

Artisan, 2002

JUICY!
I'm a watermelon lover. I was drawn to the book by the cover photograph which teased of more melons to come. Each page is a feast for the eye and the palette. The photographs jump off the page. The writing conveys each melons' individual personality. I want to know more. And, the recipes are spectacular. Especially the pickled watermelon rind.
