Siamese cat lovers....
The most exquisitely illustrated book I've ever owned! A fun, fictitious way to describe how white siamese kittens get their colors. It's a bit long for a bed time story, but really fun! Kids ages 8 or 9 and up may be able to read it themselves, but the beginners may have a hard time.

Wonderful book!
We are in the process of adopting a baby from China, and this book just made my heart break. The images are so beautiful, and the children are so precious! In my mind, they seem to be simply be waiting... We can't wait to give one of them a home.

An amusing, surprising account of writers as rockers.
When Stephen King, Dave Barry, Amy Tan, Barbara Kingsolver, Dave Marsh and other famous authors formed an ad hoc rock band for a booksellers' convention, everyone--including them--saw it as a one-time lark. Their motto: "We play music as well as Metallica writes novels." But energized by the experience, and the fantasies and camaraderie it sparked, they decided to mount an East-Coast tour as ...

audio version is charming, engaging, magical
The book is wonderful, so interesting. It is rather like Eat,Pray,Love with a chinese twist. The AUDIO version of the book is a revelation: Amy Tan has a lively and lovely voice, she is a gifted mimic, and she does a fabulous job of reading this great book. There are some very sad parts, you will definitely be moved to think and consider wider concepts, but it is completely delightful ...

Heart to soul...good snippets of thoughts.
Yes, you can go back home. Most of these quotes come from books that either I remember reading as a young girl or that I read to my sons when they were growing up. As an adult/grown-up they have an entirely new meaning and perception that is heartrendering at times and at others very up lifting. I liked it and have purchased another to pass along.

You Laugh and Cry -- but You Smile in the End
Mixing allegorical tale of Chinese culture with modern western Californian quirks, Amy Tan's intercontinental/intergenerational tale of four mothers and four daughters is enlightening. The four mothers are from well-to-do families who are displaced from their wealth and country because of the incredibly quick changes of war -- immensely powerful changes through force and might unparalleled by ...

A Stunning Read
The Bonesetter's Daughter is, essentially, about how the past affects the future. Some other major themes are the relationships between mothers and daughters and the culture gap between Chinese immigrants and their children. In the first half of the book (the "present"), Ruth's mother is suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Ruth often recalls significant moments in her childhood that ...

A visual treat and mind candy
This is a great book. I came across this book by accident and loved it. The book is written as a series of short stories from the perspective a small boy growing up in 1930's China. Yang provides the reader will a taste of life in China during the 1930's. The author painted the pictures in the book. The paintings add zest. Very talented.

Much Better Then You Would Think From The Reviews!
I am really surprised at the reviews I have seen thus far. Although this book is a change of pace for Amy Tan the sometimes viscous response from some of the readers reviewing the novel is quite frankly shocking. I actually enjoyed the novel a great deal. I thought the plot mechanism used by the author to observe the primary characters, give us insight into the feelings and motivations but ...

Amy Tan has a gift with words.
I read this book a little over a year ago for my ap english 2 class. I really liked how it displayed the Chinese culture and values. It is basically a book of mother-daughter relationships. There are four mothers and four daughters. The mothers are Chinese women who immigrated in the United States. The daughters are Chinese-American. It shows how people (like those in the United States) tend ...

Spanish translation of Joy Luck Club
I don't know why the Amazon website doesn't state that this is a Spanish translation of The Joy Luck Club. I was going to order it, thinking that it was a new book from Amy Tan. Thank goodness I googled the title and found out it's actually not a new book. In any case, I have not read the Spanish translation, so I can't speak to the quality of it, but I really enjoyed the original English ...

A Story of a Woman's Relationship With Her Daughter
This brilliantly written novel by Amy Tan tells the story of a mother's life in China during WWII and, later, her relationship with her daughter, Pearl. The author's use of voice brings the story to life remarkably well. Amy Tan develops her characters with intense detail, and I could almost feel their thoughts and emotions exuding from the page while the story unfolded. The beautiful ...

The Kitchen God's Wife
I read the book The Kitchen God's Wife by Amy Tan. In this book the author explores controversial issues such as ender and how it relates to life in China at the beginning of World War II through today. I would recommend this book to anyone who has struggled over any major bumps in their life involving predjudice and injustice. This book show how a person can be strong enough to overcome ...
