A Town Called Ruby Prairie (Coming Home to Ruby Prairie, Book 1)6 reviews
Annette Smith

Moody Publishers, 2004

Wonderful Storytelling
What a wonderful story. While this novel is similar to Jan Karon's Mitford novels, Annette Smith's storytelling reminds me more of a cross between Phillip Gulley and James Herriott (my personal favorite.) Small town life. Community. Neighbors helping one another through the ups and downs of life. I'm so glad there will be more of Ruby Prairie. I can't wait.

Aime Cesaire, The Collected Poetry3 reviews
Aimé Césaire

University of California Press, 1984

Shining star of surrealism and negritude
First of all this book itself is beautifully designed and oversized, containing selections from five of Cesaire's published books of poety, separated by prints by Wilfredo Lam. This poetry of Cesaire requires an extensive introduction since it is filled with both politicsl and surrealistic elements. The editor provide a 30 page introduction which was very helpful. I found that I needed to ...

Notebook of a Return to the Native Land (Wesleyan Poetry)3 reviews
Aime Cesaire

Wesleyan, 2001

?Pay no attention to my black skin: the sun did it?.
Notebook is so beautiful and awe-inspiring that I am loath to attempt a review for fear of failing to transmit how powerful a message it really has. That being said, it is a battle cry and a rallying point for the Negritude movement. Rejecting the roles of slave or victim, Cesaire pounds the reader with a repetition of painful and degrading symbols and words (i.e. the taboo: "nigger"). Using ...

7 Steps to Success in Dual Language Immersion: A Brief Guide for Teachers and Administrators1 review
Lore Carrera-Carrillo, Annette Rickert Smith

Heinemann, 2006

Easy to access information
This book is very informative and accessive. The chapters are short and rich in information that will certainly help me through the transition of teaching in a bilingual setting. It is a 10!

Homemade Humble Pie: And Other Slices of Life1 review
Annette Gail Smith

Revell, 2001

Twenty Six Delightful Quick to Read Stories
This book is written in a conversational style in which the author brings 26 interesting stories to life. Each character is skillfully drawn, often reminding you of someone you know. A Bible verse at the end brings the message of the story in a few words. Delightful reading which can be picked up to read and put down quickly because each story is complete in itself!

A New Day at Tanglewood (Coming Home to Ruby Prairie, Book 2)2 reviews
Annette Smith

Center Point Books, 2007

Great, heartwarming story
I, too, loved Annette's first novel in the Ruby Prairie series. But the second one, A New Day at Tanglewood, is even better: more action, plot, suspense, more character development, more romance--yet still more of the same likeable characters in this small town setting. Annette has a way of drawing the reader into the simple Mayberry-like lifestyle, and making you wish you could go there and ...

The Social World of Alcoholics Anonymous: How It Works1 review
Annette R Smith

iUniverse, Inc., 2007

The Social World of All of Us
For alcoholics and their families, Smith explains the many levels in which one can participate in AA and why the chosen level may determine the degree of success in achieving one's goals. Although I am not an alcoholic, I was drawn to this book by its interesting title. My "what's in it for me" attitude quickly dissipated as I learned that all social organizations have similarities in ...

Everything Your Baby Would Ask, If Only He or She Could Talk4 reviews
Kyra Karmiloff, Annette Karmiloff-Smith

St. Martin's Press, 1999

Were your baby British...
I wish my baby would ask about nappy-changing and why he's not peckish, but even though I know I'll have an American baby I can enjoy the adorable question and answer format of this book as well as its many delicious color photos. I appreciated this book's balance between mainstream and "granola" childrearing theories, its wealth of information about child development, and its witty approach.

A Bigger Life (Eden Plain Series #1)25 reviews
Annette Smith

NavPress Publishing Group, 2007

A memorable book
This book made me cry but not for the obvious reasons i.e. a sad storyline. The beauty which brought tears to my eyes was the love that was apparent within the characters....between husband and wife, friends, church members, as well as acquaintances. I especially appreciated the imperfect nature of each of the characters. Somehow that made them so much more real and therefore likable to me. ...

Watermelon Days and Firefly Nights: Heartwarming Scenes from Small Town Life4 reviews
Annette Gail Smith

Revell, 2002

Mayberry Meets Mitford in this great Southern-fried fiction!
Five stars isn't enough! I'd give it 10 if I could. I loved Annette Smith's latest book-Watermelon Days and Firefly Nights, and didn't want to leave the delightful town of Ella Louise, Texas (which I predict will soon join the ranks of Jan Karon's Mitford and Andy Griffith's beloved Mayberry.) And I'm in good company, too. Publisher's Weekly also likens this wonderful book and Smith's charming, ...

Beyond Modularity: A Developmental Perspective on Cognitive Science2 reviews
Annette Karmiloff-Smith

The MIT Press, 1995

A model for child's cognitive development
Cognitive development has been the issue of research and debate for years. Many theories have been proposed in order to effectively describe and explain cognitive development. Two of those theories are Fodor's nativism and Piaget's constructivism. In the specific book, Annette Karmiloff-Smith, a student of Piaget, is proposing a model of child cognitive development. The author's effort is ...

Help! My Little Girl's Growing Up: Guiding Your Daughter Through Her Physical and Emotional Changes1 review
Annette Gail Smith

Harvest House Publishers, 2001

Enjoy the Journey
As a small town family doctor I sometimes get the feeling that 'adolescence' and 'tragedy' are linked words. Annette Smith offers a hopeful and enjoyable antidote to the angst that, perhaps not unjustly, grips many parents wishing the best for their daughters in an age so often unfriendly and even exploitive of their particular vunerabilities. Approaching her subject with the hands of an ...

Terror in Cairo (Handy book)1 review
Annette Smith

Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1979

An Exciting and Timely Book for Young People
In the new post-September-11th world, this book could not be more timely. The author, Annette Smith's, exciting writing style completely captivates as she describes a teenaged boy, Steve Barrett's, adventures with Arab terrorists both in the air and after he lands in Egypt. His successes can help empower teen and young readers in these trying times. Based on her son's true adventures in Egypt, ...

The Whispers of Angels1 review
Annette Gail Smith

Harvest House Publishers, 1998

The Healing of the Spirit by Nursing from the Heart.
A warm hearted, thought provoking insite to the day to day life of a nurse. Compassion, love, and respect are shown throughout this book of short stories. A subtle explaination of the horrors and fears, tears and joy, facing todays nurse. Some stories make you laugh, some make you cry. Not for the unbeliever for God's word is sprinkled on each page. Definately a gifted lady who writes ...

A Crooked Path (Eden Plain Series #2)3 reviews
Annette Smith

NavPress Publishing Group, 2007

The other side of the story
Immigration is a hot button now. Everyone has an opinion. Annette Smith tells the other side of the story. Manny Ortega's father walked away from the family, and life has been rough. Manny made the hard, dangerous trip from Mexico to Texas, looking for work to support his mother and siblings. Now he's in his mid-thirties, working for Owen Green, who is cranky and bigoted. He thinks Manny is ...

Writing Degree Zero2 reviews
Roland Barthes

Hill and Wang, 1977

I'm not smart enough to review this book...
*Writing Degree Zero* is one of those 100-page books you need a 500-page book to really understand. You know you're in trouble when, like me, you find yourself having a problem fully comprehending even the `explanatory' preface. In which, by the way, Susan Sontag warns of the difficulty of the text and states that *Writing Degree Zero* serves as a kind of précis of Barthes' early views that ...

The Complete Book of Vitamins and Minerals1 review
Consumer Guide editors, Arline McDonald, ...

Consumer Guide, 1996

Complete Book of Vitamins & Minerals by Consumer Guide
Large print, simple food lists and brief vitamin & mineral profiles make this a quick & simple reference. I find it irritating however, that the minerals profiled are not in alphabetical order and am required to use the back-of-the-book index. If you want in-depth information supported by references try Jean Carper's books and the Health Prevention Magazine books. I also liked Nutrition for ...

Elements of semiology4 reviews
Roland Barthes

Hill and Wang, 1968

A terse, dense book on struggling with symbols
Semiology had its birth with Saussure and the publication of his lecture notes by students in 1916, entitled Course in General Linguistics. Semiology was to be a general science of signs, of which linguistics would be one part. However, over time it has become clear that there exist no complex systems of symbols completely removed from language. Semioticians have recognized, then, that ...

Rethinking Innateness: A Connectionist Perspective on Development (Neural Networks and Connectionist Modeling)3 reviews
Jeffrey L. Elman, Elizabeth A. Bates, ...

The MIT Press, 1997

Chomsky is dead or at least dying...
Grammar isn't encoded in our genomes. It is learned. The beginnings of the proof are here. This is an important book. Read it and it's companion: Exercises in Rethinking Innateness : A Handbook for Connectionist Simulations; which gives you hands on with the models discussed.

Till Morning Comes1 review
L. Annette Smith

Derek Press, 2005

Foothills of Missouri
When reading this book it was like you are living in that time. It was an excellent book. It is a Christian based, mystery novel depicted from the early 1900's. If you are interested in going back in time, and reading mystery novels you really need to read this book! I thoroughly enjoyed it!
