Beowulf (Signet Classics)

The epic poem Beowulf is the earliest extant poem in a modern European language— reflecting a feudal, newly Christian world of heroes and monsters, blood and victory, life and death. Its beauty, power, and artistry have kept it alive for more than thirteen centuries.

The most readable truest English rendition of the Gita
The Bhagavad Gita is the world's most translated scripture. The task for a Gita translator is to effectively take the poetic multilayer Sanskrit original and translate it into English preserving it's flavor allowing it to stand alone without commentary. Few have succeeded. I have read multiple editions of the Gita and,in my Sanskrit studies, read the original in Sanskrit. While I haven't read ...

great recovery tool.....for the non-alcohol drug abuser
this is a must-have resource for those whose drug of choice is not alcohol, but some other drug (cocaine, meth, marijuana, Rx meds, etc.) Like the book Alcoholics Anonymous, it explains the foundations of recovery for those starting their journey into sobriety and recovery. After reading this, I would encourage the person to read other recovery materials, especially from the Hazelden ...

Dawood Koran from Penguin Classics
OK, I have an Arabic speaking friend who criticizes all English translations of the Koran. Because Dawood wasn't available online, as are Pickthal, Shakir, and others, I bought a copy, and as far as translations go, it's probably as good as you're going to get in English. Yusuf Ali is *soft* in his rendering, and you're going to need supporting books like the Tafsirs, Hadiths, and Sira to get ...

Raffel triumphs again
This 14th Century poem is one of the earliest known works in English. Its provenance is a mystery because literally nothing is known of the poet. It is written in a unique dialect of Middle English and is pretty much unread in the original. This verse translation by Burton Raffel is terrific and does much to elevate the work to the level of Beowulf & Chaucer. At Christmas time, a Green ...

sober23and counting
The last writer is on a Jesus soap box. This book and AA meetings have made a better person, a more loving person and a better Christen out of me. All recovery depends on a decision to trust God, make amends for past sins, and live a clean and sober life. Most people may want to stop abusing but cannot or will not change the way they think and live. I believe Jesus delivered me but someone else ...

The tale of the evolution of storytelling that reveals shared mythology in religions
This version is a very popular adaptation of the Gilgamesh story because it contains N. K. Sandars' crucial introduction which is just as important as the translation itself because it includes information about the discovery of the tablets in Assyria dating back to the third millennium BC and then goes on to explain the difficulties that scholars have had in rediscovering the story from these ...

Arrived as Described
The seller kindly emailed me after she sent the book off to me. She wanted to make sure it arrived in good time, and asked me to email when it arrived so she could monitor the actual days required to mail it. That showed a conscientious spirit, which is reassuring when buying blind from an unknown buyer.

Go Ask Alice
I loved this book. The emotion that the protagonist conveys throughout the book is clearly relatable from generation to generation. I recommend this book for every teenager out there.

Glad I Finally Read It
This is another from my "what haven't I read that maybe I should have" period. This is a difficult read - part of which is because of the way the text and variants are put together (though I don't know how to make it any better). So, have patience. This is the first translation I have read of Gilgamesh (and probably my last unless new material adds significantly to the text) so I can't comment ...

Healing emotional hunger one step at a time
Before the image of an OA meeting being filled with obese people fills your mind ... think again. An overeater can be anyone ... fashion model ... successful accountant in a size 8 ... fitness trainer ... midly plump dental assistant ... anyone. The causes and reasons are different. Overeating is not a lack of willpower but an emotional relationship to food that has someone not know when to ...

Don't dismiss Cook's translation out of hand...
I recently became interested in Norse mythology, and after acquiring a number of books on the subject my interest spilled over into Norse, particularly Icelandic, sagas. I bought the hefty Penguin "The Sagas of Icelanders", and since all the reviewers for it lamented the exclusion (understandably, for space reasons) of Njal's Saga, I bought that separately, and I've just finished reading it. ...

A Great Translation
Jesse Byock's translation of the Völsungasaga manages to be both faithful and readable (not as common a combination as you might think), and it strikes a nice balance in its use of only the most important footnotes (a little more than 100 over the course of the saga). These are usually etymological / onomastic in nature, which was very much to my liking. I would have preferred them to be actual ...

The Franks Homer
An utter epic that deserves to be read by anyone with an intrest in either literature or history. Although there is controversy over the exact historical accuracy of this classic poem, it is based around the Charlemagne's campaigns against the Muslims in Northern Spain, around the late eighth century. It reads like a Frankish iliad, real events draped in myth. The poem has it all: ...

A book of wisdom, courage, and hope
This little meditation book is a great help for people in recovery seeking to build and maintain a firm spiritual foundation one day at a time. Using A.A.'s "take what you can use and leave the rest" rule of thumb will make this book of tremendous value to most anyone, regardless of religion (or lack thereof).

A first-hand look at Hell
This diary is a chilling first-hand account of a German woman's horrific ordeal under the occupation of the Red Army in 1945 Berlin. The main reality of that occupation was, of course, rape- brutal, nightly gang rape of every German female that could be caught- no matter her age, infirmity or physical appearance. The dustjacket blurb was incorrect when it said that this diary details the ...

A new enlightened Master!
I think Milarepa was one of the highest levels of enlightened beings ever existed on the planet. Considering the Miracles he did. He is one of the recent enlighten masters, and all this happened a few hundred years ago. He has received little Attention compared to Buddha, Jesus, Mohammed and Khrishna. There is defenately a lot to learn from this book, and what he did is worth reading about.
