Linux in a Nutshell (In a Nutshell (O'Reilly))37 reviews
Ellen Siever, Aaron Weber, ...

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2005

Still a very helpful, very valuable reference
Getting a bit long in tooth, but Linux hasn't changed that much since this was published in 2005. Much of it is a reprint of what you'll find in the MAN pages, with better tyography and formatting. Not particularly helpful for the rank beginner, unless used as a secondary source. As a handy reference to Linux - truly Linux in a nutshell - it still has no equal in terms of comprehensiveness ...

Learning the vi Editor (6th Edition)43 reviews
Arnold Robbins, Linda Lamb

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 1998

Beginner to Advanced, Comprehensive Guide to Reference
This book is well written and laid out. Whether or not you are a beginner or advanced user coming to vi, this is a valuable tool for getting the most out of vi. vi is by no means an easy or intuitive editor, but with a little practice, it can greatly improve your efficiency. The book does a great job of taking you through a logical progression of how to start using the product. Also, the ...

VI Editor Pocket Reference16 reviews
Arnold Robbins

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 1998

A very, very good pocket reference
This is the first time I've given any book five stars. That's because this is the best pocket quick reference of VI you're going to find. The information is presented as concisely as it can be and still remain accessible. Other, terser (and, yes, less expensive) quick reference cards for VI are too cryptic to be useful, in my opinion. If you don't already know VI, try an on-line tutorial ...

Learning the Korn Shell (2nd Edition)35 reviews
Arnold Robbins, Bill Rosenblatt

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2002

Learning the Korn Shell (2nd Edition)
I once was blind. Spending decades in the UNIX world I spent time with several shells. Down through the years I visited many shells and even bought a book on the Korn Shell by the designer David Korn. I sort of got complacent (know-it-all). Now obtaining a position supporting AIX I once again find that the prefer supported shell is the Korn shell; even sh is linked to ksh93. Several times I ...

sed & awk (2nd Edition)40 reviews
Dale Dougherty, Arnold Robbins

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 1997

Are you serious?
In a nutshell, if you don't have this book, you are probably not a serious programmer or system administrator. Both sed and awk have been around for ages, and they are part of the fundamental toolkit of any Unix/Linux professional. Furthermore, there are versions available both for native Windows and for Linux-like environments under Windows (cygwin, MKS, mingw.) If you are a Perl hacker, ...

Unix in a Nutshell, Fourth Edition15 reviews
Arnold Robbins

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2005

The perfect reference
This is in my opinion the best UNIX reference book on the market today. If you need to program or work in the OS you should own this book.

Effective awk Programming (3rd Edition)5 reviews
Arnold Robbins

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2001

Most Complete Coverage of Awk
Awk is one of those handy Unix tools with which you can easily impress people. Using a simple /pattern/ { action } syntax, you can construct powerful one-liners. Do you want to how much time in total you spent surfing the Internet? Here it is: awk '/Connect time/ { s += $8 } END { print s }' /var/log/messages It doesn't get much shorter in any other programming language, does it? Need to strip ...

Classic Shell Scripting11 reviews
Arnold Robbins, Nelson H.F. Beebe

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2005

Practical and useful
Great book. The emphasis is nicely split between actually using the shell itself and the whole supporting cast of unix tools (sed, awk, cut, join, sort etc.) The idea of carefully crafting solutions using the unix toolbox mindset is key. I also like the fact he doesn't try to teach to multiple shells, but first tries to emphasize portability by sticking mainly to a POSIX standard, and only later ...

sed and awk Pocket Reference, 2nd Edition6 reviews
Arnold Robbins

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2002

All you need to use sed or awk well.
I bought this "book" because I am writing a program that deals extensively with strings and text (natural language parsing). I was having some difficulty mastering sed, and understanding how it works. For example, "s/[^A-Za-z]//" was not working (to remove non alpha chars). After five pages in this little gem, I knew what I needed. A trailing "g". The book is rich with examples, ...

Learning the vi and Vim Editors3 reviews
Arnold Robbins, Elbert Hannah, ...

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2008

An updated version of a very useful and well-written little book
vi, like many of the utilities developed during the early years of Unix, has a reputation for being hard to navigate. Bram Moolenaar's enhanced clone, Vim ("vi Improved"), has gone a long way toward removing reasons for such impressions. Vim includes many conveniences, visual guides, and help screens. It has become possibly the most popular version of vi, so this seventh edition of this book ...

Linux Programming by Example: The Fundamentals (Prentice Hall Open Source Software Development Series)8 reviews
Arnold Robbins

Prentice Hall PTR, 2004

A new classic
I loved this book. It's earned an honored place on my bookshelf, and I'm going to recommend it to people who need information about Linux and UNIX development. Many computer books are practically obsolete before they ship: within a few months, "Learn Foomatic 4.3 in 21 Days" is in the bargain bin at the Dollar Tree. Some books have longer lives, and a few can remain useful for years. "Linux ...

The Archaeology1 review
Arnold J. Robbins

PublishAmerica, 2007

Very Good Book
I liked this book. It was very deep and brought back some thoughts of my own life. I would recommend this book to any poetry lover.

Unix in a Nutshell: A Desktop Quick Reference for SVR4 and Solaris 7 (3rd Edition)41 reviews
Arnold Robbins

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 1999

nice first UNIX book
I like easy to read book and I also had assumed that learning UNIX is not necessarily has to be a struggle. This book stood up to my expectations almost perfectly: it is very well written and clearly expressed work. It does not overwhelm with technical details and does not press too much. I also followed an advise in someone review and purchased "UNIX Essentials" DVD that is complete unix course ...

Graphic Classics Volume 5: Jack London - 2nd Edition (Graphic Classics (Graphic Novels))2 reviews
Jack London, Rod Lott, ...

Eureka Productions, 2006

Weird and Wild tales from an American master
Think of Jack London, and the image springs to mind of racing dog packs racing over icy Alaskan landscapes, fighting fang and fur in a primitive struggle for life. On the reading list of almost every American school system, "The Call of the Wild" is a classic of American literature. And there it stops. Aside from "The Call of the Wild," I was totally ignorant of Jack London's works. I never ...

GDB Pocket Reference (Pocket Reference (O'Reilly))1 review
Arnold Robbins

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2005

The free GDB Quick Reference is more useful
In my opinion, the GDB quick reference that you can download for free is more useful. To go over the basics, this book is OK, but for daily lookup purposes, the quick reference is more useful. I purchased this book as a "filler" to reach over $25 for free shipping. I'm a software engineer and do use GDB frequently.

GAWK: The GNU AWK User's Guide3 reviews
Arnold D. Robbins

Free Software Foundation, 1998

Still a great reference for (g)awk
This book is now out of print as I'm writing this review, but I still think that it is a great reference for (g)awk. I'm writing this review because I feel that if you are a relatively experienced UNIX user (not necessarily a sys admin) and want to learn about (g)awk, I highly recommend this book if you can still get your hands on it. It has been my companion for about 8 years now and is the ...
