Arthur Schwartz's Jewish Home Cooking: Yiddish Recipes Revisited9 reviews
Arthur Schwartz

Ten Speed Press, 2008

Brings back wonderful memories
From the moment I received this cookbook, it started to bring back memories of the 50's and 60's when families spent the holiday's together. All the recipes were from a different time, foods that you don't get today. A lot of the recipes were buried with my grandmother and aunts. I found them again in this book, same recipes, just modernized a little. Looking at them I pictured the recipes being ...

Depression: Theories and Treatments1 review
Arthur Schwartz, W. Schwartz

Columbia University Press, 1993

Clear writing, good overview
I used this book in an undergraduate course on depression. The writing is clear and it provides solid coverage of how to define and categorize depression, how it's diagnosed, current knowledge of biological issues (genetics and physiology of depression), and all the major psychological theories and approaches to treatment (behavioral, cognitive, psychodynamic, interpersonal). Social and ...

In Bad Taste: The MSG Syndrome (Signet)5 reviews
George R. Schwartz

Signet, 1990

Definitive book on MSG for the non-specialist general reader
George Schwartz, M.D. wrote the first edition of In Bad Taste more than ten years ago. Since then "the use of MSG and MSG-containing substances has more than doubled." While some people can use MSG with no adverse effects, many others have severe reactions to it, some of them life-threatening. Kombu, a seaweed, was first used in Japan as a flavor enhancer. A Japanese doctor isolated the ...

Writing from the Heart: Young People Share Their Wisdom (Best of the Laws of Life Essay Contest, V. 1)1 review

Templeton Foundation Press, 2000

from the heart
I think this is an excellent book which shows the truth on the hearts of the world's youth. Many books today work to stigmatize or give a bad name to this generation when infact, as this book demonstrates, we are a generation of hopful, honest, and motivated young men and women.

Arthur Schwartz's New York City Food: An Opinionated History and More Than 100 Legendary Recipes14 reviews
Arthur Schwartz

Stewart, Tabori & Chang, 2008

Nicely Done
This is a great book, written by someone with impeccable credentials ... former chief food columnist for the New York Times, and a NYC born and bred native. The author delves deeply into the history of NYC, and then works his way forwards to the present era - but he spends most of his time and energy covering the topic from the gilded age of the 1890's through the late 1980's. Between those ...

Soup Suppers: More Than 100 Main-Course Soups and 40 Accompaniments4 reviews
Arthur Schwartz

William Morrow Cookbooks, 1994

A must have cook book for every house.
Soup is food for the soul, and this book proves it. The recipes are easy to follow, and produce the most wonderful experiences with soup you will ever have. I have had this book for two years, and it is the only cook book that I have used weekly, especially during winter. I highly suggest adding this book to your library, and I promise your family will thank you time and time again.

Great Dishes from New Jersey's Favorite Restaurants2 reviews
Vicki J. Caparulo, Arthur Schwartz

Rutgers University Press, 2003

Fantastic, captivating, sizzeling and salivating!!!
For all of you that have been in one or more cooking classes with Vicki and Steve, then you are aware of the irreverent, humorous style that these two have. You are also made abundantly aware of the immense, encyclopedic knowledge of Vicki (Steve is no slouch himself). As you read each page, it's like being in class again; what an enjoyable text. Steve's pictures are the best in the business. ...

What to Cook When You Think There's Nothing in the House to Eat16 reviews
Arthur Schwartz

Perennial, 1992

If I could only have one book, this would be it.
I have hundreds of books and a couple dozen cookbooks, but if I were only allowed to keep one book out of all of them, this would be it. Every time I serve something from this book, people ask for the recipe; Thanks to this book alone, I've acquired a reputation as a brilliant cook! True, he goes a little heavy on the lemon and a little light on the garlic, but that's a matter of taste, and ...

Simple Handmade Jewelry2 reviews
Arthur Schwartz

Search Press(UK), 1992

Very stylish jewlery!
This book is a compilation of several books, so it has a lot of different styles and techniques: Polymer clay, painted glass, mother of pearl, leather cord etc. I myself come from a polymer clay background and this book gave me a lot of new ideas both of polymer clay jewlery and how to combine different mediums to get stunning looking jewlery. The book includes step-by-step instructions with ...

To Be a Slave in Brazil, 1550-18881 review
Katia M. De Queiros Mattoso

Rutgers University Press, 1987

TO BE A SLAVE IN BRAZIL
The roots and leaves of the institution of slavery in Brazil, is what this book focuses on. We travel the trade route from Africa to England to South America. Katia M. de Queiros Mattoso's goal is to show us that, contrary to popular belief, the new slaves who were ripped from their homeland were "docile" and " ready to accept their new status as slaves" (85). She brings us into a world that ...

Cooking in a Small Kitchen2 reviews
Arthur R. Schwartz

Little Brown & Co (T), 1979

Favorite cookbook
This is the best cookbook I have ever owned - regardless of kitchen size! - and I'd love to find some more of Schwartz's books or recipes. I bought it in a used-book store in Champaign, IL, years ago and have cooked many of the recipes. My favorites are the south african lamb stew, the tuscan bean soup, and the chick-pea and sausage soup.

Chapters of Brazil's Colonial History 1500-1800 (Library of Latin America)3 reviews
Joao Capistrano de Abreu

Oxford University Press, USA, 1998

Surprisingly fresh
In its choice of topics, this book is simliar in many ways to other history books from the early 20th Century. A lot of attention is paid to battles, and to catalogues of geographical data or descriptions. It's not an easy book to start with, if you're interested in understanding modern Brazil or its history. But the descriptions of people and of the social climate, especially in the early ...

Great Pies & Tarts9 reviews
CAROLE WALTER

Clarkson Potter, 1998

Kudos to Carole Walter: A Wonderful Chef, Teacher, Author
"Great Pies & Tarts" proves its worth, as your taste will attest, when you sample the results from the instructions and recipies presented. Please note, Arthur Schwartz, a wonderful culinary professional, is not a co-author as advertised. Examining the book will confirm this.

Physics for Computer Science Students: With Emphasis on Atomic and Semiconductor Physics (Undergraduate Texts ...1 review
Narciso Garcia, Steven Schwarz, ...

Too short and not enough info
This book does not elaborate the topics . It is very short and not enough info to gain knowledge. So I am looking for a good study guide for this book, it might help.
