An unusually accessible philosophy book
Popkin and Stroll, using skepticism as a springboard, have written an insightful, informal introduction to philosophy. The book is clear and readable but not superficial. In a neutral way, the authors review how all great thinkers from the Greeks to the contemporary have dealt with theories about our ability to know anything. The work is structured in three parts: The first defines skepticism ...

Lucid and Able Survey of Philosophy
Do not interpret the "Made Simple" part of the title to mean "over-simplified" or "simplistic." This book is a lucid and able survey of philosophy at an intermediate level. The seven sections cover ethics, political philosophy, metaphysics, philosophy of religion, the theory of knowledge, logic, and contemporary philosophy. (The only major topic missing is esthetics.) In doing philosophy one ...

Finally, someone really delves into Wittgenstein..
Stroll's book is a must-read for anyone remotely interested in the present status of present-day philosophy, particularly with the plethora of authors trying to make a quick dollar on new-age neurophilosophy. Stroll aptly cuts to the core of Wittgenstein's opus "On Certainty" and lays the main thrusts of his arguments open to the general public. Stroll begins by walking the reader through ...

Fantastic
Not just that this is very readable book, but it is multi-layered one. You can read it with little attention, but if you put more attention to it, new things appear. In fact it is so interesting, that I wanted to find some information 5 months after reading the book, and found myself reading it again.

"Three" Wittgensteins instead of "Two"?
I was directed to this book by a Wittgenstein aficionado who assured me that Stroll offers a unique and particularly enlightening explication of Wittgenstein's somewhat abstruse thought. Since my familiarity with Wittgenstein was mostly from the sixties, before many of his works saw the light of publication, my informant suggested that I would find a whole new way of seeing Wittgenstein's last ...
Sketches of Landscapes: Philosophy by Example
Avrum Stroll
The MIT Press
, 1997
Avrum Stroll accepts the ancient tradition that one of the tasks of philosophy is to give an accurate account of the world's features, both animate and inanimate. But, he contends, because these features are inexhaustibly complex, no single theory or conceptual model can provide a complete account. Stroll's approach is piecemeal and example-oriented. In stressing the importance of examples, his work runs counter to one of the most powerful and ...
