Just what the title says "in his own words"
I read this book "In His Own Words" last summer and I really enjoyed it. I keep it on the nightstand by my bed and look at every now and again. The book isn't one he wrote but a complilation of things he's said and his opinions. The book is funny in some places and well...not funny in others. I recomend this book for anyone who likes John Lennon, or wants to learn a bit about him.

One of the earliest photo-books on Bowie
Wow, I'm surprised to see this book available out here, a must for any Bowie fan. It's a huge book, the size of an album cover, great photos on every single page, most in color. Thorough writing by Barry Miles gives you the initial glimpses into the artist, David Bowie, his personal life and musical evolution. Has lots of rare photos that go right up to the end of the '70's. I own two copies; ...

Excellent visual companion to Zappa
This is an excellent companion to your Zappa collection. It might be of little interest to those totally not in the know about Zappa; unlike Bet Watson's excellent "Negative Dialectics of Poodle Play" however, it is not incomprehensible to the novice. The chronological flow and the wealth of biographical material is a fine bonus, as are the hitherto rare photos of Zappa with various family ...

Poets see hell through the eyes of angels
I reread this little book before attempting to review it. I remembered that it was a mad mantra of transcendent power from the heart of hell, but I didn't remember how nondated it was. This work is fresher and more relevant than 99% of what passes for poetry today. How can something last nearly 50 years without going stale or becoming trite? How can it be even more real now? Maybe it is because ...

Acknowledges that there is no such thing as a pat ending
Written by Barry Lane and enhanced with the artwork of Miles Bodimeade, The Tortoise And The Hare Continued... is a charming and very highly recommended children's color picturebook that extrapolates from Aesop's famous "slow and steady wins the race" parable. As we all know, the tortoise challenged the hare to a race, and the tortoise won because the hare was lazy... but what happened the next ...

An excellent reference of the Virginia Barrier Islands
Those who live on the beach are subject to some of the more momentous forces of nature.... storms and hurricanes. In few other places has this been the case more than along the Virginia coast....and this work explores all those who lived in this treacherous margin between the mainland and the ocean. The book covers the continuing shifting of the islands through time, as well as their attempts ...

Excellently crafted musical tabliture!
This music book contains some of the McCartney repertoire. Both Beatles and solo matierial is included. It is especially unique because of the McCartney drawn pictures included. The guitar tabs are magnificent and it truly shows McCartney's musical diversity. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in McCarney's music.

Fascinating, Scholarly Sketch of Literary History
The first time I read this book, I turned back over to the first page and read it again. It was that good. I am a huge Burroughs fan, and I learned a new appreciation for Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso and Brion Gysin. The grist of this book provides insight into the day-to-day maze of creativity whose epicenter happened to be Post WWII Paris. If you are looking for a fresh, lively, intelligent ...

Truly their own words
This was the first of the many books I've read about the Beatles. It is as much the way the previous reviewers below describe it - - but for me when reading it the first time really touched my imagination. I was a young Beatle freak in the early 1980's, hungry for Beatles info. I got the book as a gift from my family, after they saw that I was listening to same Beatles albums over and over again. ...

This book has Amazing pictures!
This book covers most everything that happened to the Beatles and even has quotes. The book has many pictures of the Fab Four that I had never seen before. I enjoyed the way the book was set up. No matter if you are a hardcore Beatles Freak or a first time listener you can still enjoy the book.

Everything you wanted to know about Ginberg and more.
This is the ultimate Allen Ginsberg biography. It goes into detail about all aspects of Allen's life from his childhood with emotionally disturbed mother Naomi (for which Kaddish was written) to his death from liver cancer in 1997. All his crazy times with fellow beats (Kerouac, Burroughs, Corso, etc.) are well documented and events which are eluded to in his poetry and journals are brought to ...

Unpretentious Art!
Regardless of the high brow reviews of this book, I chose to purchase this book to see if this was another celebrity who found art and realized their celebrity could sell their art. Bottom line I had hoped that McCartney's personality would triuumph and his down to earth philoposphy would come through. Indeed it did and this is the first Unpretentious book on Art I have ever read. If anyone has ...

How the Music Evolved
Barry Miles' biography of Paul McCartney (Many Years from Now) is distinctive from other Beatles's biographies for its detailed look at how all that iconic music came together. As one example, McCartney gives an insider's view of where he was and what he was doing when he composed "Here, There, and Everywhere," as well as the off hand remark that playing one particular chord led to "Fool on the ...

Beyond Good & Evil
Burroughs' work is a reaction to post -1945 cold war America in its radical deployment of tone, style and content. It endured bans, censorship and obscenity trials before hitting bookstores in the early nineteen sixties. But for all that, its continuing power is as spiritual work that makes it more than merely a insightful document of its times. "Naked Lunch" is no "Ulysses" and yet it shares ...

Hippie
Hippie by Barry Miles ***** One of the greatest and most interesting coffee table books in history. Hippie is bright with vibrant pictures of the hippie movement, which in this book is depicted as more than just a small gathering in San Francisco, California in the mid to late 1960's, but something that was much bigger and basically covered the entire globe. Packed with great and ...

A TARNISHED KING
This biography is part of an unceasing flow of writings about Kerouac and about the Beat movement which he helped to inspire. Miles's book is valuable because it explains why people continue to read Kerouac and the beats and also focuses on the limitations of the movement, I think, through discussion of Kerouac as a person. Kerouac was first and foremost a writer. Miles' book emphasizes this. ...
