Excellent source for those interested in wild flowers
Burrell, with his Gardener's Encyclopedia of Wildflowers, has filled an invaluable gap in the literature. Books on wild flowers are widely available, but few offer definitive details on the growing and cultivation of these precious, often endangered, plants. In addition to its stunning illustrations and workable garden designs Gardener's Encyclopedia adds sources for seeds and plants ...

One to buy
I typically take books like this out of the local library when I need them, but I've bought this one, because of a combination of factors: low price, great readability, good pictures, good comprehensive overview of the plants. It is not really useful to me in quite the way the authors might have intended, that is, "Don't buy plant X, buy plants Y or Z or W instead..." One's likes/dislikes for ...

Destined to be a classic garden reference.
I'm a master gardener from Illinois, and have heard Tracy Disabato-Aust on a number of occasions. Her book The Well-Tended Perennial Garden has long been our bible for perennials. In this new book, she makes accessible for all gardeners the depth of her experience and research in incorporating many kinds of plants in a mixed border. The book is worth buying for the appendices alone: plants by ...

Irresistible Plants, Irresistible Book!!
For such a widely heralded group of plants, hellebores have always suffered from a dearth of supporting literature. Many of the best books are out-of-print and nearly impossible to find. The few volumes available approach the genus from a decidely European vantage point. This book solves both problems -- delivering comprehensive information applicable to a North American audience. Almost all ...

Love This Book
Although I have a plethora of gardening books, this one stands out as one of my favorites. It shows a picture example on every page. It has planting diagrams (garden plans) so you can duplicate what you see and it gives a lot of information about the plants. It's the best of both worlds - you can use the information and get creative, or follow the plans and duplicate what you see. Either way, ...

Good intro and update for the gardener....
Colston Burrell and others have developed an extremely useful guide for the early-intermediate gardener. This book is not gardening for dummies, but neither is the content so complex the relative newcomer cannot use it. The contents consist of a compendium of pertinent topic-based articles and an approximately 100 pages (three per page) of photographs and descriptions of "popular" perennials and ...

One of my favorites.
I love references with great info, tips, and I love pictures. That's a big seller for me. Quality pictures with cultivar descriptions. This book delivers. It is one of my favorite perennial reference guides. I refer to it all the time. Inspirational pictures.

Disappointed
Disappointed with this purchase. It is a boring, humdrum tome, not at all what I expected. Reads more like a novel for an English class instead of an informative, pictorial as I imagined. May try to resell on Amazon.com marketplace.

Better Homes & Gardens Perennials for Today's Gardens
I loved this book, the photographs were simply gorgeous (starting with the cover). There was excellent and practical advice on how to design a garden for the beginner as well as advanced gardener. The best part of the book was the author's plant suggestions and usage in the garden.I would highly recommend this awesome book and I can't wait to try his suggestions in my garden.

Good beginner's book...
In this BBG monograph, garden designer Colston Burrell reveals methods for transforming your small city plot baking in sunlight into a stunning garden bed using perennials. These BBG guides are an inexpensive and safe way to begin learning about gardening in urban and suburban areas, and perhaps because the source is located in a large metropolitan area (New York). Furthermore, most if not all of ...

Exactly What I Needed!
This gardening book is exactly what the beginning gardener needs to plan their garden. It is beautifully illustrated, with photos of each type of perennial, and detailed descriptions of each. The information provided is extremely helpful, since it includes ideal climate, growing guidelines, height and spread. I found myself browsing through this book for hours reading about the different ...

Good plantings book, but short on design....
INTIMATE GARDENS by Burrell and Hardiman provides tips for the gardener with a small urban space or a larger ex-urban space in need of humanizing. These days, most gardeners are not faced with the enviable task of creating intimate spaces in an otherwise vast, undifferentiated but potential garden area. Nevertheless, we may dream of someday owning such a spread and being faced with this ...

TERRIFIC book on perennial gardening!
I have found this to be the most helpful gardening book ever. Lots of great illustrations! It is highly informative, and the information is presented so clearly, including breakdowns like lists of "plants for moist soil," "most fragrant plants," etc. Along with all the carefully presented descriptions of landscape gardening in general, the book includes detailed descriptions and photos of many ...
