Memorable, Provocative and Entertaining
This is the first book that I read from Carol Emschwiller. I read a short story of hers from another annual collection and thereafter desired to read more of her stories. Each of the 19 stories included in "Report to the Men's Club" are imaginative and original. For example, in "Mrs. Jones", one of two rivaling spinsters realizes that a strange creature has been visiting them at night. It is her ...

A Wonderful Book
It's sad that no one has reviewed this book yet! It is a very affecting, sweet look at an old west family, mostly from the point of view of the extremely feisty daughter. It is very funny, very humanistic, and very heartrending. It's a great book to read while on vacation.

Not excellent, but sweet. I enjoyed it.
Bobby has secrets; she has her family's life savings and a gun in her suitcase, her sister's boyfriend is really a horse (sometimes), but the biggest secret of all, the one that not even her father knows, the secret she must keep to become a stage magician, is that she's a girl. I'm not sure this is actually a YA book. The character is young for a teen book, but it takes place during the great ...

A Good Collection
I read the first collection, The Firebird, and feel in love all over again with Megan W. Turner and for this book, in addition to my already favorite authors, it introduced me to more of authors whose styles I like very much. First of all is Ellen Klages, with 'In The House of the Seven Librarians'. I love her prose and all the words make a nice song in my head. It was almost like a poetry. ...

I Love This Book
I inherited this book and thus didn't have Ledoyt, the book which comes before it. It didn't matter. The story stands on its own and it is wonderful. Beautifully written--never over-written, though--beautifully perceived and understood humans. I can't say how much I like this book. As soon as I finished it I ordered Ledoyt. Mimi

Highly amusing social commentary
"Women are turning into animals, and animals are turning into women..." What a way to start off a book. Pooch, a dog-girl who longs to play the title role in "Carmen," absconds with a baby whose mother is becoming a turtle. Along the way, she meets many other intriguing characters, among them a snake-woman and a vicious socialite who is quickly becoming what her personality most resembles ...

Must Read
You have to read this book. Although Emshwiller is really just a poor writer (at age 64, I've read an average of 80 books per year, and at last, with cancer in my bones, I feel I'm qualified to judge), the idea behind this book is more than enough to overcome her lack of ability. All I want as an old SF reader is a new idea ... for once, here's one ... though, as I said, poorly written. ...

Superior science fiction.
A prolific writer of short stories, until recently it has been hard for Emshwiller to receive the recognition she richly deserves. With the publication of this new collection, she now has three books simultaneously in print, including her fascinating novel, Carmen Dog, and another collection, Verging on the Pertinent. The Start Of The End Of It All (1991) gives us 18 short stories, ...

A hard-hitting story
A handful of aliens stranded on earth and awaiting rescue reside in a stone city hidden in a mountain range - and they're running out of time. They've assimilated as a source of cheap labor to the human world - but rescuers arrive to change their enclave and will introduce both danger and romance into their quest for survival and the path home in a hard-hitting story highly recommended for any ...

Excellent antholgy from the edges
Not to be missed irregular anthology series that looks beyond the usual suspects to find good to great, and generally interesting, stories. Handy table of contents added below! The third in the series is now out. Very handy to have someone filtering through all these magazines and books to dig out the best. Long may it continue. Mirage Diver" by Terry Dowling, from the collection Rynosseros ...
I Live with You
Carol Emshwiller
Tachyon Publications
, 2005
A sophisticated collection of fierce, tender fiction marked by absurdist humor, these striking short stories skillfully explore themes of war, seduction, and censorship. An Eden emerges from the wreckage and destruction of burning books in "The Library." "Boys" sets a weary general and his sons against a village of determined mothers, and "I Live with You" brings a chaos from an uninvited guest. Filled with originality and lyricism, this ...
