At Large: The Strange Case of the World's Biggest Internet Invasion23 reviews
David H. Freedman, Charles C. Mann

Amazon Remainders Account, 1998

Fascinating!
This book chronicles the exploits of a young computer enthusiast who managed to break into an alarming number of computers, mainly by sheer perseverance. The book is also the story of the people who hunted this early cybercriminal and how he was ultimately caught. One of the remarkable aspects of the story is that the chief antagonist (the "hacker") was not particularly skilled. He was ...

Aspirin Wars, The: Money, Medicine, and l00 Years of Rampant Competition2 reviews
Charles C. Mann

Knopf, 1991

A most facinating case study of international Business
I first picked up this book in the bargain bin at my college bookstore for only $1.00. It is probably the most interesting non-fiction book I have ever read. Even though it concentrates on the trials and tribulations of aspirin, it gives an interesting picture of over-the-counter drug marketing and promotion during the 20th century. The book is well researched, with liberal footnotes. The ...

1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus187 reviews
Charles C. Mann

Vintage, 2006

Fascinating revisionist history. Well documented balanced account.
"1491" is a well researched book. Mann has extensively traveled to South America with the leading social scientists at the cutting edge of pre-Columbian history revisionism. Additionally, Mann has solicited these same scientists' editorial input. Thus, the quality of the book content is excellent. Mann does a good job in presenting as objectively as possible the polemical debates on ...

Noah's Choice: The Future of Endangered Species1 review
Charles C. Mann

Knopf, 1995

Avoids controversy
I can't remember where I first saw this book reviewed and recommended, but I do remember that I couldn't check it out in the school library because one of the Range Science professors put it on reserve for his class. That intrigued me enough to just buy it. I found the first 3/4 of the book fascinating as it described a variety of encounters between human activity and species decline. Mann ...

The Second Creation: Makers of the Revolution in Twentieth-Century Physics6 reviews
Robert P. Crease, Charles C. Mann

Rutgers University Press, 1996

The best popular science book yet written
This book has proved beyond any reasonable doubt that the telling of the story of 20th century fundamental physics is a task that should not be entrusted to physicists. No, it appears a journalist and a philosopher are not only able to bring the story to life in a way that almost all physics text books fail to do, but at the same time to never lose sight of the important scientific issues. I ...

1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus1 review
Charles C. Mann

Knopf, 2006

A beautifully written, thoughtful revision to the history of the Americas
Charles Mann has produced a fascinating account of the cultural, scientific and military history of the American people--before the 1st European stepped foot on the soil. This book compiles enormous and thought-provoking revisions to the spotty, Eurocentric history we were taught in school, all of it supported by very recent scientific evidence. I couldn't put it down. I have made gifts of this ...

Material World: A Global Family Portrait52 reviews
Peter Menzel, Charles C. Mann

Sierra Club Books, 1995

Beautiful book!
This book is a fascinating look at materialism, or the lack of it, around the world. Oddly enough, the American family was not the most obviously materialistic; there was a Saudi family with a 42 foot long couch! I have put this gorgeously photographed book in my classroom for independant reading time for my 9th graders. It is filled with statistics, information about the countries and the ...

Ancient Americans1 review
Charles C Mann

Granta Books, 2005

It's 1491, but worth a read
I've read 1491, by the same author. It's an excellent book. If you haven't read it, READ IT. But, based on the Tables of Contents, which are identical, this book and 1491 are the same book. The exact page counts do differ, and I haven't done a page-for-page comparison, but the Tables of Contents are the same. I hope this helps.
