The Last Supper23 reviews
Charles McCarry

Overlook TP, 2008

Top Notch
A book like this could go on for another couple of hundred pages, and I wouldn't mind a bit. The writing is so rich -- it's perfect for reading, on and off, for several days until, finally, it leaves you with a touch of melancholy. The Paul Christopher series reminds me of author Len Deighton's Bernard Samson series. You know that the storyline will eventually end, but not yet because you still ...

Old Boys32 reviews
Charles McCarry

Amazon Remainders Account, 2005

I'm Not An Espionage Fan...
...but I'm a big fan of the work of Charles McCarry. This is the best flat-out adventure novel he's ever written and it's obvious that he had a great time doing it. Oddly enough, in all the good reviews this novel has received, there has been very little praise given to the humor it contains. 'Old Boys' is not only beautifully written, well-plotted and marvelously paced, it's very ...

Miernik Dossier2 reviews
Charles McCarry

Overlook TP, 2007

Head and shoulders above most current spy novels
As a writer McCarry blows away the current thrller writers such as Brad Thor et. al. His characters are real people, psychologically complex. Because of his background as an actual intelligence officer he is able to describe how the game is really played, not resort to a lot of Jason Bourne-style shootouts. He also uses an ingenious plot device- information about the characters is revealed ...

Christopher's Ghosts13 reviews
Charles McCarry

Overlook Duckworth, 2007

A Suit of Armor
Christopher's Ghosts is an attempt to tell how master spy Paul Christopher got the to be way he is--that is to say, how he acquired his suit of armor. It's a deft attempt that begins in late 30s Berlin as the explosive force of WWII gathers. The historical figure of Reinhard Heydrich adds a touch of pure evil to compliment the more human cast ranged on either side of the Nazi divide. This ...

Shelley's Heart12 reviews
Charles Mccarry

Random House, 1995

Absolutely UNPUTDOWNABLE!!
Charles McCarry is one of the top writers of espionage, suspense/thriller fiction and most definitely in the same literary league with John LeCarre, Alan Furst, Eric Ambler and Ken Follett. McCarry's nuanced, at times poetic, writing style, his ability to create real, flesh and blood characters who will move you, and his fast-paced, taunt storylines, put him at the top of the list for ...

Second Sight: A Paul Christopher Novel4 reviews
Charles McCarry

Overlook Hardcover, 2007

McCarry is the Best, Bar None
Choosing the best Charles McCarry novel is like choosing the best Mozart Sonata. There is no best, there are only favorites. There is a lovely scene in this book where the head of the "Outfit," McCarry's version of the CIA, and his sweet, wonderful wife entertain a trendy rich radically chic couple. The scene sums up everything that was wrong about the 60s and even if the rest of the book wasn't ...

The Secret Lovers: A Paul Christopher Novel (Paul Christopher Novels)8 reviews
Charles McCarry

Overlook Hardcover, 2006

None Better - but read before listening to it!
The Secret Lovers by McCarry is a cold-eyed but fully engaged odessey of love, the emotional and analytical paths of betrayal and its unraveling, and the imitation of life that is tradecraft. If you found a lifetime of enjoyment in LeCarre's Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (i.e., if you re-read it every few years just to spend a day with an old friend) you will find the same kind of unforgetable ...

The Better Angels5 reviews
Charles McCarry

Overlook Hardcover, 2008

Chillingly predicts the events of 9/11
It's been awhile sice I read this book, but after 9/11, I thought about how shockingly close to the actual events The Better Angels becomes. Especially note worthy is the Islamic cleric hiding in caves and the rigged election using what was then very ahead-of-its time computer technology. This book along with all of McCarry's work is excellent fiction. He writes so well, its a shame his books ...

Christopher's Ghost
Charles McCarry

Overlook TP, 2008

It's a case of tiger chasing tiger as Christopher is pursued by the only man alive who can match his tradecraft or his instincts. Years previously, Christopher witnessed an unspeakable atrocity committed by an S.S. officer. Now, at the height of the Cold War, that officer has emerged to destroy the last living witness of his savage crime. As he edges toward the final confrontation with this mortal enemy, Christopher is forced to operate in the ...

Tears of Autumn: A Paul Christopher Novel24 reviews
Charles McCarry

Overlook TP, 2007

Not dated, but made relevant by 9/11
The reviewer who called this book "dated" is wrong. The book was reissued precisely because 9/11 had made it suddenly relevant. TEARS OF AUTUMN suggests that JKF was assassinated as "blowback" from Vietnam. JFK had okayed the assassination of Vietnam's president Diem, and Diem's family gave "payback" by assassinating JFK. 9/11 as "blowback" has been much in the news these past few years; ...

Bride of the Wilderness6 reviews
Charles McCarry

Signet, 1989

Unusual Adventure Story
I nearly didn't read this book because I thought it was a romance and didn't feel in the mood for that particular genre. Despite my intentions of passing it on to a friend, I opened it up and decided to just read a few pages -- I'm SO glad I did! Once I started reading, I couldn't stop. I won't try to rehash the plot as other reviews have covered it nicely, but I will add my thoughts ...

The Miernik Dossier14 reviews
Charles McCarry

Overlook Hardcover, 2005

First of this Outstanding Series
This the first book in this exceptional, albeit short, series about the fictional American spy Paul Christopher and his cohorts. Luckily, the earlier books have now been reissued and are available. Set in the Cold War era, which may seem long ago, the earlier novels are so well crafted that they are still great reads today and more than relevant.

Double Eagle: Ben Abruzzo, Maxie Anderson, Larry Newman1 review
Charles McCarry

Little, Brown, 1979

Cool Book...interesting
I read this book years ago,got it at the local library...This is the story of the first people to ever take a helium balloon across the Atlantic Ocean...It tells of the first failed attempt and the 2nd highly successful journey that these men took.At first I thought 'Well it is no big deal',but as I read their story you start to understand just why it had never been done before,it is no small ...

Lucky Bastard:: A Novel22 reviews
Charles Mccarry

Random House, 1998

His best since Shelley's Heart
Those that are giving this 1 star are inconsoloble Clinton lovers. This is the best book written about the Clinton's....yes the Clinton's. The deal with China in the book spells it all out and is historically accurate. I can't believe this is not in paperback, this is a great thriller and just plain intersting whether you love or hate Bill. Highly recommended. BUY IT!

The Mernik Dossier
Charles McCarry

Ballantine, 1974

From the back of the book: Five international agents- each spinning a web of deception. Each one a spider. Each one a fly. But who was Tadeusz Miernik? A shy and bumbling scientist or the leader of a terror force that could set the Cold War aflame!

From the Field: A Collection of Writings from National Geographic1 review

National Geographic Society, 1997

A lovely anthology for courses in literary nonfiction
How would you like to read what Sir Edmund Hillary wrote about climbing, or Alexander Graham Bell wrote about inventions? This book is a jewel... a brilliant idea, marvelously executed. I plan to include it on the syllabus for my nonfiction literature course.
