How to Make a Pie6 reviews
Editors of Cook's Illustrated Magazine, Jack Bishop

Boston Common Press, 1996

The Best!
Use this book and you will make wonderful pies! Our family loves the apple pie and the chocolate cream and the banana cream. But the best thing is the crust recipe. You'll get a reputation for really knowing how to make pies! This is a succinct little book at a minimal price. My only surprise is that they did not use Clearjel as a thickener. It's Great!

America's Test Kitchen Live!: The All-New Companion to America's Favorite Public Television Cooking Series ...7 reviews

America's Test Kitchen, 2004

But use your own judgment
I absolutely love ATK and buy all of their books. The techniques they present are top notch and as close to bulletproof as you can get. I find the spicing a little mild for my tastes so I usually amp that up a bit. Tasting results are the aggregated opinion of several people so some of the more unusual flavors you might get a kick out of may be rounded out in the math.

The Best Recipe204 reviews
Editors of Cook's Illustrated Magazine

Boston Common Press, 1999

Truly the best recipe!
This cookbook is one of my most ragged cookbooks. It is the one I look for when I want to fix something special or homey. The stew recipe is absolutely the best! Elaine Littau Author of "Nan's Journey"

Inside America's Test Kitchen: All-New Recipes, Quick Tips, Equipment Ratings, Food Tastings, Science ...7 reviews

America's Test Kitchen, 2003

Terrific
I've bought a number of books published by Boston Common Press, and all of them, including this one, are superb cookbooks for the home cook. They explain exactly what to do and why to do it that way. In my experience, cookbooks of any sort (especially restaurant cookbooks by celebrity chefs) tend to suffer from poor writing and give uneven results. This one does not. To my palate, perhaps one ...

Italian Classics (The Best Recipe Series)11 reviews

Boston Common Press, 2002

Excellent Italian reference for American cooks
A passionate home cook that has been honing her cooking skills for the last 25 years, concentrating on Italian cooking for the last 10 years, writes this review. My favorite cookbooks are "The Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute and "Culinary Artistry". With more than 500 cookbooks in my collection I am usually disappointed in my recent cookbook acquisitions. I am also very tough on ...

Here In America's Test Kitchen: All New Recipes, Quick Tips, Equipment Ratings, Food Tastings, and Science ...11 reviews

Boston Common Press, 2002

Quality Cooking Advice & Phenomenal Ribs!
As someone who consider's themselves an elite "home chef", I stopped using recipe books years ago and just built on the basics that I'd gleaned from reading what I considered the "essential" cookbooks. Then, one stormy Saturday afternoon when the husband was at work and the kids were away at Grandma's, I stumbled on America's Test Kitchen on PBS. Needless to say, I loved what I saw. Now I am a ...

The New Best Recipe: All-New Edition with 1,000 Recipes199 reviews
Editors of Cook's Illustrated Magazine

America's Test Kitchen, 2004

Classic!
I agree with one of the reviewers that he/she feels like a pro using the "The Best" series. I've cooked from this book and several of "The Best" Series and they ALL came up excellent according to the people and guests to whom I'd served them: from Asian to Italian to restaurant cooking, and many more. It takes away the guessing from what I've been doing. I agree with the editors that their books ...

How to Make Ice Cream: An Illustrated Step-By-Step Guide to Perfect Ice Cream (Cook's Illustrated How to Cook)11 reviews
Cook's Illustrated Magazine

Boston Common Press, 1997

The PERFECT ice cream book!
I've never been moved to write a review before, but after my first successful batch of ice-cream (following many miserable failures) - I decided that I must share my joy. First of all, this is a lovely little hard bound book. It will take up a tiny space on your shelves - and, most importantly, it is easy to hold with one hand while you are fastidiously stirring custard with the other. ...

The Cook's Illustrated Guide To Grilling And Barbecue: A Practical Guide for the Outdoor Cook21 reviews

America's Test Kitchen, 2005

Fantastic!
I'm not much of a meat eater, but wanted to be able to cook really good meat when I grill. This book may make me a meat lover! Each recipe is very educational as they explain many of the methods they tried before determining the best method for grilling a particular item. I've tried four recipes so far and they have all been absolutely perfect. I grilled burgers for a crowd on the 4th of July and ...

Cook's Illustrated, December 2006 Issue1 review
Editors of Cook's Illustrated Magazine

Boston Common Press, 2006

Love the magazine
I love Cook's Illustrated magazine. They do extensive testing with recipe variations to find out how to get the best possible results. If you are just looking for recipes, this magazine probably isn't the best option, but if you like to see how a recipe develops into a keeper, then this is for you. This November-December 2006 issue contains articles titled Better Arugula Salads, Favorite Spice ...

The Best Italian Classics (Best Recipe Classics)1 review

America's Test Kitchen, 2007

All of their books are wonderful. This one did not let me down.
Just as all the other books and their magazines, this book will not let you down. The recipies are wonderful. There are great explanations for each step and a story for how the recipe came about. It is a must have for your kitchen. The chicken picata recipe is to die for.

The Best Cover & Bake Recipes (Best Recipe Classics Paperback)1 review

Boston Common Press, 2008

"Would you make 35 batches of macaroni and cheese to find the absolute best recipe?"
(4.5 stars) With a large Test Kitchen and a group of chefs committed to finding THE BEST recipe for many casseroles, Cook's Illustrated has issued a collection of old-fashioned, traditional, one-dish meals. Inspired by the fact that recipes like Mac and Cheese, Green Bean Casserole, and Chicken Divan have, over the years become tasteless, colorless, and/or unappetizing, due to the overuse of ...

I love Cook's Illustrated magazine. They do extensive testing with recipe variations to find out how to get the best possible results. Cover and Bake (With Free Issue of Cook's Illustrated)3 reviews

America's Test Kitchen, 2004

Great Format!
If you love the magazine, "Cook's Illustrated" but don't know how to organize the recipes (photocopy/cut-and-paste onto 4x6" cards? tear out your favorites and keep in a binder? keep all the issues and try to remember which had what?), then this book is for you. The recipes, the background, the tips -- they're all here in an organized, workable format. Hooray!

How to Make Sauces and Gravies2 reviews
Editors of Cook's Illustrated Magazine, Jack Bishop

Boston Common Press, 2000

Wonderful Book
Don't let its humble appearance fool you, this is a great book on sauces and gravies. True to Cook's Illustrated's methodology, the book gives background testing info and the best recipe. Cook's prefers recipes that are quick and flavorful and this book follows suit. If you are looking for a tradional simmer-all-day type of sauce, this is not the book for you. My only complaint is that there ...

Cooks Illustrated, Summer 2008 Issue1 review
Editors of COOKS ILLUSTRATED Magazine

BOSTON COMMON PRESS, 2008

Great summer recipes & a nice gift idea
I'm a big CI fan and have been following them for several years now. I picked up this issue as an impulse buy at the supermarket and have used several recipes from it in just a few short weeks. Although I don't know if all the recipes are compiled from several past issues of Cook's Illustrated's bi-monthly magazine, I noticed several that overlap - which is a good thing in fact, because its ...

Cook's Illustrated 2003 Annual2 reviews

Boston Common Press, 2003

2003 was a great year
2003 was a great year for Cook's Illustrated. There are many recipes I make for special occassions - they are not very healthy, so I don't do them often, but they recieve rave reviews. Roast Lemon Chicken (Jan/Feb), German Apple Pancake (Jan/Feb), Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting (March/Apr), Scalloped Potatoes (March/Apr), Lemon Cheesecake (May/Jun), Pumpkin Cheesecake (Nov/Dec), Green ...

Cook's Illustrated 2001 Annual (Cooks Illustrated Annuals)3 reviews

Cook's Illustrated, 2000

Want to be a better cook?
Cook's Illustrated is a no-nonsense, incredibly detailed, well-written, well-researched, and fussy-about-quality-food magazine written for American home cooks and foodies, not gourmet cooks (although the food you'll end up cooking might qualify as gourmet) or food faddists. The annuals include all of the magazines for that year bound into hardcovers and handily indexed. Quick Tips showcase ...
