A book to read out loud
I picked up this book several years ago because I loved David MacFarlane's quirky weekly column in the Globe & Mail. Instead of the lighthearted journalism I was expecting, I found a soft and dreamy story, full of bittersweet thoughts and raw relationships and cold lakes in summer. The narrative flows effortlessly back and forth in time, often without defined edges. There isn't quite a defined ...

a pleasure just to read
I saw this book at a bed and breakfast we were staying in. On my return I orderded multiple copies to give to friends. It is so well and I will say so sweetly written that everyone should read it just for fun. The author's use a common and kindly sense approach toward writing thank you notes that makes it fun to do rather than a task. They cover a range of reasons for thank you's as well as ...

An amazing read
This is an amazing book: history, biography, auto-biograhy, philosphy all combined into a powerful tale of family character (and characters)that stays with you. In essence, a simple reflection on long past lives from a little corner of the world, Newfoundland, all wound up in the Great War, it becomes a haunting tour-de-force of the power of great events on everyday people. The chapter "Fire" is ...

Superb resource for musicians and singers
An indispensable resource for English-speakers wishing to learn traditional Macedonian songs. Thorough, beautifully edited, respectful of tradition and easy to use (spiral-bound to lie flat on a music stand). Highly recommended and well worth the price. The book includes voice and tambura charts, lyrics (Macedonian Cyrillic as well as Latin alphabet) and translations for 35 Slavic Macedonian ...

Wonderful stories in this impressionistic account
I would have to disagree with the reviewers who fault the book for being confusing. It's a memoir! It wanders over time and space, but nonetheless leaves a clear impression of life in one of Canada's forgotten, yet unforgettable, corners. You will never forget the story about how the family tried to wheedle the location of the pirate treasure from the old pirate, and what he said.
