Gospel Choirs: Psalms Of Survival In An Alien Land Called Home1 review
Derrick Bell

Basic Books, 1997

Another fine entry in a compelling series.
Once again Derrick Bell artfully weaves fiction in to the fabric of what are essentially life lessons on race in America. As an avid Bell fan I was familiar with his storytelling style and was not disappointed by this latest entry. The test for me with any book is whether there are quotes or sections which stand independent in my mind and can be easily identified with or transplanted to other ...

Faces At The Bottom Of The Well: The Permanence Of Racism6 reviews
Derrick Bell

Basic Books, 1993

Bell makes it known, racism will always exist. Sad isn't it
After reading this book, Professor Bell became one of the main reasons I chose to attend NYU School of Law. Bell poignantly tells the story of an oppressed race through allegory that at once is entertaining and educational. Two stories in particular made such an impact that I still feel it a full 5 years after reading the book. The first, Afrolantica, focused on the accomplishments that African ...

After the Storm: Black Intellectuals Explore the Meaning of Hurricane Katrina2 reviews

New Press, 2007

A Survivor of the Storm
I lived in New Orleans 18 years and have relocated since Katrina. My fellow law professors have done an excellent job exposing the reality of New Orleans before and after the storm. I recommend this collection of thoughtful essays to anyone who wants a candid look at how race is relevant even when it shouldn't be. All Americans should be outraged and continue to seek justice for our fellow ...

Silent Covenants: Brown v. Board of Education and the Unfulfilled Hopes for Racial Reform6 reviews
Derrick Bell

Oxford University Press, USA, 2005

Thinking about Brown v. Board of Ed--not honoring it
Read this book. It makes you think critically, challenge your assumptions, and argue with the author. What more can you ask of a book? Bell has the honesty to look at Brown from the perspective of its fiftieth anniversary, and ask the question, "What did it all mean?" Bell has the standing to ask this question, having devoted much of his life to litigation seeking to enforce the promise of ...

Afrolantica Legacies3 reviews
Derrick Bell

Third World Press, 1997

FAscinating
What I found most impressive about this book is the way it challenges assumptions and attitudes about Jewish racism and hegemony. Bell is a courageous and brilliant writer, and this is the best novel I have read in several months. And as a feminist and white woman, I found it much more interesting than many other books by white writers who attempt to address these issues. Highly recommended.

Ethical Ambition: Living a Life of Meaning and Worth13 reviews
Derrick Bell

Bloomsbury USA, 2003

Inspiring
Professor Bell shares with us deep personal insight into how people struggle to reconcile their ambition with their ethics. He relates his triumphs, and his failures. Most importantly, he teaches us how to think about how much more we will enjoy our life if we put our ethics first, and then shape our ambitions around those ethics. As a young attorney only 6 years out of law school, I ...

Mississippi Harmony: Memoirs of a Freedom Fighter3 reviews
Winson Hudson, Constance Curry

Palgrave Macmillan, 2002

Is there a cause for which you would lay down your life?
With popular focus on Martin Luther King Thurgood Marshall, and the other "heroes" of the civil rights movement, we tend to ignore the fact that the success of the movement ultimately depended not on these national figures, but on thousands of individuals who decided that freedom was worth laying down their lives and the lives of their children. Winson Hudson was one of those women. Born in 1916 ...
