Irish names galore!
As a soon to be first time father with strong Irish roots, the choice of child's name has been a topic of heated discussion for some time. During our research we happened upon this book and it was a terrific find. In addition to containing the names you would expect, it contains a host of names I had never come across. The history of each name is an added delight. Simply browsing the pages of ...

A fairly useful collection of words and phrases
I bought this book at Fred Hanna's Bookshop in Dublin, where it was displayed in a cellophane wrapper, so I had no idea of the contents. It's less of a dictionary than a collection of usages from throughout Ireland-however, it is thoroughly enjoyable from a lay point of view; more so than from a scholarly point of view. It also contains an excellent bibliography.
Irish Words and Phrases

Irish Words and Phrases is a popular guide to Irish speech. English as spoken in Ireland draws heavily on words and phrases of Gaelic origin: these are the main emphasis in this book. However, many other words and formations were originally standard English but have fallen into disuse so that a word like oxter (armpit) which used to be commonplace in England now only survives in Ireland. This guide to popular Irish usage will appeal to visitors ...

A Dialect Of Forth and Bargy
I heard about this book from family members and teachers after I had inquired about the dialect "Yola", a Norse language which continued to be spoken on the south-western shores of Ireland long after its exploitation by the Vikings. The book was an excellent source of information for my projects, and gave me much insight into the spoken language in that area of the world.

Irish Slang
Diarmaid O'Muirithe

, 2004
Slang is the common language of the streets and fields. Ireland, with its interesting mixture of languages and dialects, has a particularly rich store of it. It has fascinated some of our greatest writers, not least Joyce, Flann O'Brien, Behan and Beckett. Although often thought of as common, slang has in fact made a significant contribution to the distinctive nature of Irish writing as well as to the patterns of ordinary Irish speech. Diarmaid ...
