The Girl of His Dreams (A Commissario Guido Brunetti Mystery)26 reviews
Donna Leon

Atlantic Monthly Press, 2008

All of Leon's books are wonderful reads, and THE GIRL OF HIS DREAMS stands tall among them.
THE GIRL OF HIS DREAMS is Donna Leon's 17th police procedural featuring Commissario Guido Brunetti, the warm-hearted cop who reads the classics and gets his greatest joy from his family. The novel opens upon a gloomy scene at a graveside service in honor of Guido's mother. With him are his wife, Paola, daughter Chiara and son Raffi. His brother, Sergio, and some of Sergio's children also ...

Death at LaFenice
Not your typical mystery book. The ending is not only a surprise, but a unique one. Enjoy!

Friends in High Places8 reviews
Donna Leon

Penguin (Non-Classics), 2008

Commissario Brunetti takes on the Foundations of Venice.
In Italy, Buildings or Apartments should always be listed - officially, and should always have two sets of records for buildings with any reconstruction plans that have happened or happening - officially. When purchasing a property, the new owner retains one copy from the pervious owner - officially. The other would be retained by the Ufficio Catasto - officially. These plans are stored and used ...

Another wonderful Brunetti
First Sentence: Domestic tranquility prevailed. Commissario Guido Brunetti sees the report of an assault on a woman he'd met during a previous case. Art historian Dotoressa Brett Lynch, staying with her lover, opera diva Flavia Petrelli, is in Venice to meet museum curator, Dottor Semenzati regarding ancient Chinese pots that had been on display in his museum but, when they arrive back in ...

Death in a Strange Country19 reviews
Donna Leon

Penguin (Non-Classics), 2005

Donna Leon Enthusiast
I spent time in Venice this summer and to prepare bought one of Donna Leon's Inspector Brunetti mysteries. That was all it took to hook me- I am now reading the series in order and loving every minute. Death in a Strange Country is the second book in the series. While Leon's books don't have to be read in order, it does add to the enjoyment to follow the characters as they develop.

Dressed for Death (Commissario Guido Brunetti Mysteries)12 reviews
Donna Leon

Penguin (Non-Classics), 2005

An Ironic Murder Mystery Triggers Probing Questions Leading to New Insights
With Dressed for Death (originally titled as The Anonymous Venetian), the Guido Brunetti mysteries reach their full power for the first time. As with Donna Leon's earlier books, Dressed for Death features a corpse that's prepared and deposited to create maximum confusion for the police. That tiny fragment of her style becomes a launching pad for much self-examination by readers about how others ...

Fatal Remedies11 reviews

Penguin (Non-Classics), 2007

Donna Leon does it again in Fatal Remedies
She has me so hooked with her writings. I have the list and check off the ones I read so I am not constantly re reading her mysteries. I really enjoy each one but this one was a new twist on her story writing. She does not start out with the Commissario but instead his wife ! I enjoyed the twist and turns in her story line. It's not heavy reading and keeps me interested. And I love love love ...

A Sea of Troubles5 reviews
Donna Leon

Arrow Books Ltd, 2002

Leon puts us on the 'write' course!
Donna Leon simply is a mesmerizing writer. No other author--and some do come close--approaches her today in terms of suspense, characterization, plot development, and social significance. In "Sea of Troubles," she continues her exceptional level of excellence. I could hardly wait for this edition (it's not available for some incredible reason in the States!)to arrive. Guido Brunetti has his ...

Death and Judgment (Commissario Guido Brunetti Mysteries)14 reviews
Donna Leon

Penguin Books, 2006

A very vivid book.
The first scene is of an accident involving a large carrier-truck in the mountains which, crashing, spills and kills its contents: the corpses of women lie in the snow, littering the mountainside like so many bright dolls. As in many Brunetti novels, justice does not light upon all the principal perpetrators of the worst crime, but on middlemen, illegally, some of whon you are glad to see go. ...

A Noble Radiance12 reviews
Donna Leon

Penguin (Non-Classics), 2003

Ken Le Huray
Donna Leon's creation of Guido Brunetti detective of Venice is one of the great figures of the genre. His family and the city of Venice are equally realisic. "A Noble Radiance" is full of the corrupt and aristocratic background of that city. The interplay of characters in the story is first class.

Doctored Evidence8 reviews
Donna Leon

Penguin (Non-Classics), 2005

Farewell Signora Battestini
Commissario Brunetti, truly one of only a handful of Venice's finest, solves the murder of an elderly, hateful harridan using his intelligence, humor, skill, and humanity. Follow him through the monumental buildings, calle, and offices of this most intriguing of cities, without once motoring down the Grand Canal. And learn something about the Venetian psyche in the bargain. Nearly as good as ...

Death of Faith, the7 reviews
Donna Leon

Pan Books, 1998

An outstanding mystery tale
It's always interesting to travel with the Commissario on his cases, and pleasant to share fine Italian lunches with his family, his English professora wife and his two rebellious teenagers. Brunetti is the classics-lovin, uncorrupted anti-hero who struggles successfully with both the underworld and the legal powers that be, with the aid of his beautiful and thoughtful secretary, who's a whiz ...

Through a Glass, Darkly (Commissario Guido Brunetti Mysteries)6 reviews
Donna Leon

Penguin (Non-Classics), 2007

Good Brunetti Book
Donna Leon continues her streak of delightful Guido Brunetti novels -- this one set mostly in the glass factories of Murano. She combines fascinating details of the fabled Venetian glass factories with well-developed characters and vivid geography to cook up a tale of intrigue and complexity. I think her characters here are more nuanced than in her other books, which is not a criticism of those ...

Wilful Behaviour3 reviews
Donna Leon

Arrow Books Ltd, 2003

Superb installment in a wonderful series
This book is a superb novel on its own, and a first-rate installment in a wonderful series. I hope that it gets published here in the U.S.; I found a British edition in a used bookstore and am still marveling at my good luck. What is wonderful about the Leon/Brunetti series is that Donna Leon writes superb novels about Venice and the corruption of Italian society that also have murders and ...

Suffer the Little Children: A Commissario Guido Brunetti Mystery31 reviews

Blood from a Stone (Commissario Guido Brunetti Mysteries)24 reviews
Donna Leon

Penguin (Non-Classics), 2006

Perfect Pacing and Delicious Accents in David Colacci's Reading
Books full of psychology and verbal sparring rather than action benefit from being listened to rather than read. The professional reader (or author) is able to use timing, pace, and pauses to bring inaction to life and invite you deeper inside the mind of the narrator. I found that David Collaci's reading of Blood from a Stone upgraded this book from a four-star effort as a personal read into a ...

Uniform Justice22 reviews
Donna Leon

Penguin (Non-Classics), 2004

Another wonderful Brunetti
If you like international detective stories and don't know Donna Leon's series starring Commisario Guido Brunetti then you're in for a treat. Every installment is uniformly well written, engrossing and enjoyable. Settle into crime, family dinners (with polenta)and an occasional glass of Soave as our Venetian policeman copes with fatuous superiors and nasty criminals. End with some Vin Santo.

The Anonymous Venetian6 reviews
Donna Leon

Pan Books, 1995

What sexual gratification would a person get from wearing clothing of the opposite sex? Brunetti's fetish thoughts answered.
A word used in our human circles to describe a crossdresser would be transvestite (Italian: travestito) meaning someone who dresses in the clothes usually worn by the opposite sex. Transvestites may be bisexual, heterosexual or homosexual; Transvestite comes from the Latin word travesty. Commissario Brunetti investigate the death of what is first to be thought a female worker or prostitute ...

Quietly in Their Sleep17 reviews
Donna Leon

Penguin (Non-Classics), 2007

Brunetti Follows a Tip
If you haven't read any other books in the Guido Brunetti series, don't start with this one. Go back and begin with Death at La Fenice. This book was originally issued as The Death of Faith, one of Donna Leon's best stories in terms of making the mystery hard to understand until she chooses to let a key clue become available. The book also displays the problems that detectives have in solving ...

A Venetian Reckoning4 reviews
Donna Leon

Pan Books, 1996

One of Her Best
All of Donna Leon's excellent mysteries set in Venice have a theme, beyond the common one of massive corruption in Italian politics and its connections with the Mafia. This time the theme is trafficking, and it is very powerfully developed. This time around Commisario Guido Brunetti's 14 year old daughter tries to help him out, with sad repercussions. Once again rich and respected pillars ...
