The Secret Garden (Aladdin Classics)269 reviews
Frances Hodgson Burnett

Aladdin, 1999

An Absolute Treasure!
I can't believe I missed reading this growing up. My daughter and I just read this together. It was wonderful, and we both loved it. She likes to read books over and over, and I think she will appreciate reading this even more when she gets a little older. She loved the idea of secrets, twins, and the transformation of Mary. Having not had similar experiences to the characters in the books, ...

The Second Mrs. Gioconda17 reviews
E.L. Konigsburg

Simon Pulse, 2005

About beauty
The Second Mrs. Gioconda grabbed me from the first page and didn't let go. In addition to an intriguing story about Leonardo Da Vinci and his apprentice Salai (there is some good information here, and it's relayed in a very interesting way), this is the story of beauty, both inner beauty and outward (appearance) beauty. I think that's why the story is written as it is, with the discovery of who ...

My Father's Daughter2 reviews
E.L. Konigsburg

Aladdin, 2008

Father's Arcane Daughter back in print!
I am delighted that this book is back in print. E.L. Konigsburg is most well-known for her book From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, assigned to elementary school students nationwide, and generally enjoyed by all, despite being assigned reading. That's a good book, but this one, originally titled Father's Arcane Daughter, is my favorite Konigsburg creation. (You may notice ...

Up From Jericho Tel4 reviews
E.L. Konigsburg

Aladdin, 1998

A very, very good book
This is absolutely one of the best books I have ever read in my entire life (and that's a lot). I first read it in fifth grade, and it's been on the top of my "Best" list ever since. E.L. Konigsburg's characters are realistic and funny, and her message about stardom is poignant but not preachy. I would recommend it to anybody.

The Outcasts - A Great Book
Margaret never wanted to go to summer camp. She wanted to go to Peru on a mission with her parents, or stay with her uncles. The brothers live together and own a watch shop. They build towers out of clock parts. Her parents insist that she will love camp, but she is determined not to. When the girls go water skiing she refuses, she does this for many of the camp activities. I enjoyed the book ...

A Proud Taste for Scarlet and Miniver49 reviews
E.L. Konigsburg

Aladdin, 2001

Eleanor of Aquitaine; So. Cool.
Before reading this book, I wasn't too interested in Eleanor of Aquitaine. I knew who she was, and dimly remembered reading about her somewhere, but nothing made an impression. At that time, I wasn't particularly interested in British or French history. This book completely changed that. I found Eleanor a fascinating woman, and instantly dove into a pile of books to learn more about her and her ...

Brandon's Silent to the Bone Review
Silent to the Bone SYNPOSIS: Branwell Zamborska (13) suddenly goes silent on a 911 call about why his 6 month-old sister, Nikki is unconscious. "He dropped her," reports Vivian Shawcurt, the Zamborska's English au' pair. If this is true, Branwell Zamborska can face federal charges, like manslaughter or murder. But is Vivian truthful, or is she lying? Only Branwell's best friend Connor ...

A new kid who has a secret dream: to discover some hidden treasure to make himself famous
E.L. Konigsburg's THE MYSTERIOUS EDGE OF THE HEROIC WORLD tells of Amedeo Kaplan, a new kid who has a secret dream: to discover some hidden treasure to make himself famous - and make a new friend to share his discoveries with. William is an aloof boy who is a loner and seems an odd friendship choice - but the two find themselves working on an odd mansion project and find themselves becoming ...

E.L. Konigsburg

Aladdin, 1998

A proper mystery!
I think you have to be a kid or a kid at heart to properly understand the magic of this book. What kid did not dream of running away? Here is a girl, a very practical girl, who makes that dream come true. She and her younger brother create an elaborate plan to run away and hide in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Remember, this was written before huge advancements in security. As they live an ...

The View from Saturday286 reviews
E. L. Konigsburg

Aladdin, 1998

Great Classroom Teaching Novel!
I have taught this in my classroom every year since 2000! I absolutely love it. I've used it in 6th grade and currently in 5th grade. The book easily lends itself to teaching about point of view and a host of other reading skills. Point of view is the skill I think the kids enjoy the most when using this book because each chapter is told from the perspective of a different character. The theme is ...

Throwing Shadows4 reviews
E.L. Konigsburg

Aladdin, 2007

Everyone throws a shadow...
Konigsburg has written 5 short stories that each are designed to teach a lesson about life in a subtle manner. The stories are somewhat entertaining and beautifully written. While there is something that can be learned from life, none of these stories have large impacting moments; rather they are all lessons we learn from daily experiences with people. That was what I liked about it. What I ...

(george)

Aladdin, 2007

Who is George? Only Howard Carr and his older brother, Ben, can answer that question, because only they know about George. George is the funny little man who lives inside Ben, helping him (mostly) navigate life as a sixth grader who happens to be a scientific genius and who happens to be studying organic chemistry with students much older than he. One of those students is William Hazlitt, a senior who has been Ben's lab partner in previous ...

Aladdin, 2007

Faviorite book of all time
I first read this book when I was in third grade (27 years ago!). Then, I was proud of just learning the name of the title by heart! It is definitely one of my favorite books from childhood. I can't wait to share it with my daughter (who is only 2 years old now). I recommend it for all young girls.
