A Change of Direction for the X-Men
The Uncanny X-Men "Divided We Stand," not to be confused with the X-Men "Divided We Stand" book, follows the X-Men as they try to make sense of a post-"Messiah Complex" world. Professor X is missing (in his own title, X-Men Legacy). Cable escaped with the mutant baby and into his own title. A handful of X-Men are still in outerspace fighting the third Summers brother, Vulcan. So where does ...

My Favorite Joker Story
Don't get me wrong, I did like "The Killing Joke". But I think that this story is so much better. The Killing Joke seemed so rushed to me, and this one didn't feel that way at all. I read the first joker story from Batman #1 (1940) before I read this, just because I wanted to see where the joker started. I liked the story a lot, and thought then that a modern version would be great. Well then I ...

Well worth my wait
I nearly went crazy waiting for this hardcover to arrive at my library (being broke and unable to buy it, as I would've liked to do) because I kept hearing so much about it: "Messiah Complex" this and "Messiah Complex" that and "the best X-Men crossover in decades" and such. Naturally, I couldn't wait to see if it really was worth the hype and was immediately hooked the instant I got ahold of it. ...

Best Criminal Yet?
This volume of Criminal is arguably the best yet. While the characters aren't as immediately likeable as Leo, or desperately engrossing like Tracy, they are perfectly crafted and shoved into a delightfully broken morality tale. I agree word for word with S. Curly in his above review, except for the deduction of one star for the lack of essays. You can't judge this product on what it lacks, but ...

Ed Brubaker's Captain America run continues to fire on all cylinders.
This book collects issues 31 to 36 of "Captain America volume 5", written by Ed Brubaker, with art by Steve Epting, Mike Perkins, and Butch Guice. These issues make up the story arc "The Burden of the Dream", the second act of a new epic storyline "The Death of Captain America" (the next act being "The Man Who Bought America"), an epic which opened with, obviously, the death of Captain America. ...

The first ten issues of the Eisner and Harvey Award-winning series is collected in hardcover for the first time! Written by Ed Brubaker ( Captain America ) and Greg Rucka ( Detective Comics, 52 ), this series pitted the detectives of Gotham City's Special Crimes Unit against the city's greatest villains ? in the shadow of Batman himself. This volume collects two cases of the Gotham Special Crimes Unit. In the first, a cop is killed by Mister ...

Captain America dies and the series just gets better
You'd think a story titled "The Death of Captain America" would be the end for the series, but it turns out, surprisingly, to be a new beginning, a breath of fresh air. While Steve Rogers will be sorely missed, the book's supporting cast fill his shoes admirably. As Agent 13 and the Falcon search for Rogers' killer, Bucky embarks on a single-minded mission to assassinate Tony Stark, who he ...

It's a shame I can't give it ten stars
I have to say, I absolutely loved this book. It almost made my permanent collection, but it didn't, only because of all the books you have to read to prepare for it (the early new avengers, most of the civil war books, death of Captain America, and a working knowledge of all included. Wolverine is the first one, and what I really loved was seeing a man so jaded when it comes to death be ...

Makes ME wanna challenge Shou Lao the Undying!
My favorite obscure Marvel character Iron Fist makes his return to comics in this book. Filled with superhero mysticism and crazy kung fu action, the stories contained within hold up well and deliver plenty of plot and drama. Billionaire superhero Danny Rand learns that he was not the first Iron Fist, and that there is more to his power than just punching through steel walls. A rich history and ...

Captain America...but not.
The book was good, don't get me wrong. But it seemed to be alot about the people around Cap instead of Cap himself, with a few exceptions. IF you are collecting Civil War TPBs it's a must. I like the Winter Soldier One-shot. All in all, a good read.

Noir at its bleakest and most beautiful.
Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' CRIMINAL is the best crime series possibly of all time. It has such a dedication to the pulp-noir roots of artists like authors like Jim Thompson and Paul Auster, and filmmakers like Mike Hodges and Jean-Pierre Melville that these seem like great love notes to the masters of the modern noir. The first arc of CRIMINAL, titled "Coward" is such a pulse-racing and ...

Return of the dead
Beware. If you ever receive an envelope from Ra's al Ghul, do not open it. Unfortunately for Batman, it is already too late. Ra's once again uses his private knowledge of Batman's residence to open up a virtual Pandora's Box of mayhem for him, all with the goal of enticing him to provide the means for his return. He can certainly write an intriguing and especially foreboding letter, and from the ...

A Collecter's Review
You mean to tell me after over 50 years of fighting in numerous wars and battling a plethora of sordid, odious, and sadistic villians one stealth villian's bullet finally kills the legendary Captain America? Well, it is written well, but not a believable tale.

Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips reunite for an inventive new crime series
Criminal is Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' inventive new crime drama. Each arc is a new story featuring new characters, all loosely connected--somewhat along the lines of Sin City. With Criminal, Brubaker joins Miller, Azzarello, and Bendis as a master of the modern crime comic. Strongly influenced by classic crime novels and films of all time periods, Criminal offers its readers strong ...

Unbelievably good
Seriously, who would have thought that a lower-tier character like Iron Fist would ever have gotten his own series that is this good? The writing team of Ed Brubaker (Captain America, Daredevil) and Matt Fraction (Punisher War Journal, The Order) deliver a title that combines nods to the 70's kung-fu era that helped birth the character, and just plain great storytelling. The Seven Capital ...
