Life is Difficult, but You Were Made to Overcome
In this study of the life of Jeremiah the prophet we come to see how those who seek to serve the Lord do not have it easy by any means, but the troubles we encounter actually make us more passionate and purposeful and we become all the richer in the process. One of my favorite parts is on page 24 where he says, "Life is a continuous exploration of ever more reality. Life is a constant battle ...

Fantastic, reading this is like reading Bible passages again for the first time!
I just purchased this Bible recently and am thrilled. No, it is *not* a study Bible, and the author is very clear about that in his introductory pages. But, it *is* a fantastic way to get your mind thinking about the Bible and God's Word in a whole new way! The language will shake you out of the complacency you may have found yourself in after years of being familiar with the Bible. If you have ...

A Long Obedience by Richard Foster
Great insight into the spiritual disciplines Christians should be displaying to the outside world. Interestingly, there are MORE spiritual disciplines than I imagined. The more, the merrier!

Essential to have on hand
Peterson's paraphrase can be a little "folksy" in places, but essentially provides a rendition of the New Testament that is shed of spiritual fluff and the amazingly strong message of the writings comes through with clarity. I keep it on hand to read with other English translations and it gives a good perspective.

beautiful book - great read
EVerybody should read the Bible and this is an easy-reading version, not translated word-for-word, but catches and holds your interest. I would not recommend this version for theology study; check with KJV for that.
Tell It Slant: A Conversation on the Language of Jesus in His Stories and Prayers

TELL IT SLANT is about more than Jesus' use of language
TELL IT SLANT. Huh? The phrase is a not-quite-grammatical derivative of the clichéd "tell it straight." It isn't original to author Peterson; it's from a line of poetry by Emily Dickinson: "Tell all the Truth but tell it slant." Peterson sees the idiom as descriptive of Jesus' mode of communication, especially as portrayed in 10 parables that are unique to the Gospel of Luke --- found between ...

Not Knowing but Becoming
This book goes down easy, like a comfort food. I expect nothing less from Eugene Peterson, the translator of The Message, a wonderful modern English translation of the Bible. Here, he challenges why and how we read scripture while remaining gentle and encouraging about the matter, as a pastor should. In the first part, Peterson challenges "my holy wants, my holy needs, and my holy wants" as ...

Great Translation but not for study
I bought this book for my Kindle because I love the Message translation, and was not disappointed. The Remix 2.0 version contains extended chapter introductions and a great introduction to the overall book. It is not a Bible I would use for study, but is a great translation to just read and soak in the material. In addition, I use it along with my NLT Study Bible to help grasp some verses I do ...

DANGER: ISOLATING SPIRITUAL LIFE FROM ACTUAL LIVING
In THE JESUS WAY, Peterson alludes to the human tendency to separate our spiritual lives from our daily lives. Real danger lurks in this type of thinking! If I desire to be a disciple of Jesus, it doesn't compute to relegate my friendship with Him to one day of worship each week. For years I ignorantly did so, choosing to do as I pleased the other seven days of the week. By doing this, my life ...

Move on, move up!
Practice Resurrection: A Conversation on Growing Up in Christ I had a lot of bad assumptions about Peterson. Initially, I thought THE MESSAGE was just another paraphrase intent on dumbing down the gospel, watering the Word, and trying to be "seeker-friendly" at the expense of becoming God-less. I carried those false assumptions into my reading of PRACTICE RESURRECTION. I was wrong. This was ...

Good review of Bible Translations
Peterson does a great job of explaining where the different Bible translations came from. He also tells his motivation for writing the Message. The Message uses the "ordinary", "everyday" Greek that folks in Bible times used to make a grocery list. Some of the more "scholarly" translations introduced additional Greek words that obscure the true meaning of the Scripture.

This is My Favorite of All Peterson's Books!
POSITIVES If I had the opportunity to put together a small list of "must have" books for the libraries of Christian Leaders across the nation, this book would be on that list. It is wonderfully profound and simple at the same time. It reminds the pastor what God has called the pastor to be, yet is valuable for laity to read also. PROBLEMS If I was forced to list one drawback with this book, it ...

I found the print too small for my taste, but that is nothing against the book itself, Amazon should have included something about that in the description because I'm sure the print is smaller than in most books like this.

A lifechanging book
I'm a huge fan of this book. I love that the bible is translated in contemporary language and that I can fully understand the meaning of the words in it. God changed my life and He used this book to do it! And another great thing about this book: it's pretty! I love that it's pink. I take a train to university on a daily basis and when I read this bible, people are curious. The book looks 'hip' ...

Pastoral Integrity
In Working the Angles: The Shape of Pastoral Integrity (Grand Rapids: William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, c. 1987), Eugene Peterson expresses his concern that America's pastors have slipped into a "company of shopkeepers" anxiously marketing their wares, cultivating steady customers, making sure the bottom line balance satisfies their accountants. Lost in the busyness of shop ...

Exceptional Tool for Change
I am on the board of a men's fellowship in Seattle called Teleios. We have over 90 groups with 700 members spread out from the inner city to board rooms. This version of the Bible sets these groups on fire. God is using it to change how we interact and believe. I was very skeptical at first. The common language though reflects our language in our groups and action becomes much more simple instead ...

Excellent theology
This was my first Eugene Peterson book to read. I must confess that I haven't even read his translation of the Bible, "The Message." Under the Unpredictable Plant was an assigned text for a Master's class I took and it proved to be a gem. It is an excellent source for pastoral theology, written by a pastor with a rarely found balanced perspective in ministry; intelligent, spiritual and ...

The only way to live...
Peterson seems to say that, if we call ourselves "Christians," we have no choice but to live as if the resurrection really happened. He rejects religiosity in favor of faith and relationship, but he attaches new meaning to Christian practices like Holy Communion and he links "living the resurrection" with everyday life and ordinary activites. You may never look at a supper with friends the ...

Great first bible for the 4-8 Crowd
Beautiful artwork and well written stories that can be read to your children. Format suggests an activity you can do with your children. These are very neat, but you will probably want to limit those to once or twice a week. I got these as gifts for the parents of my grandchildren.
