Superb supernatural fiction
This collection of F. Marion Crawford's blood-curdling short stories is well worth tracking down. Though all of the stories are worth great merrit, there are a few in particular that need to be highlighted. "For The Blood Is The Life" is one of the absolute best tales of the folkloric vampire of tradition - yet Crawford puts a unique and eerie Romantic spin on things, which enables the story to ...

A love story with substance
Marietta: A Maid of Venice is the story of Zorzi, the foreign servant of a Venetian glass-blower. There are two things he wants; to be allowed to operate a furnace of his own, and to have Marietta, his master's beautiful daughter, for his wife. Both these goals seem impossible, as the trade of glass-blowing is reserved for native Venetians only, and Marietta is engaged to marry Jacopo Contarini, ...

Marzio's Crucufix
Marzio, a silversmith, is a socialist who hates much in "modern" Italy, but mostly he hates his brother Paolo, who is a priest. He hates the church. Yet he has made many artifacts for his brother and the church. He has a beautiful crucifix that he's made many years before, and through it he gains redemption with his brother, whom he thought of killing. The ending is too quickly played out and the ...

A pleasing mixture of gothic and nautical horror
At the beginning of the twentieth century, F. Marion Crawford was one of the most prolific, widely-read novelists of the English-speaking world--a sort of Sidney Sheldon of the Edwardian era. Now, his novels are banished to the musty shelves of old-fashioned romance and historical fiction, but his supernatural tales live on, most especially "The Upper Berth" and "The Screaming Skull." Lee ...

Among his best novels
A cigarette maker in Munich believes he is really a count and heir to a great Russian fortune, and every Wednesday expects to get a visit from Russian officials so informing him. Of course it never happens and everyone thinks him mad. He is also in love with a girl who works with him, who loves him back and tries hard to believe in his illusion. Sure enough the whole thing comes true; our hero ...

A Good Collection of Ghost Stories by Great Authors
Dover's collections of ghost, horror, and mystery stories are among the best deals in the paperback book world. I read this volume around Halloween, and it made what little hair I have left curl and vanish. The quality of the individual stories varies greatly, with the best being "Wandering Willie's Tale" by Sir Walter Scott, "Doctor Heidegger's Experiment" by Nathaniel Hawthorne, and the ...

A real beauty
Set during the Second Crusade, the story revolves around Gilbert Warde, an English knight, and the two women who love him: Eleanor of Aquataine (Queen of France), and Beatrix, a childhood sweetheart. The power, of course, lies with Eleanor, but Gilbert is true to his childhood love. The ending is a bit strained when Beatrix refuses to believe that Gilbert loves her and asks for proof. He rescues ...

BOO! Gotcha!
I've always enjoyed a little spooky stuff just before heading off to bed. Leave the light on, and try not to think about that strange looking paw-like shadow over by the closet door.

A Brilliant Classic of Occult Fiction!
When a person is asked to describe a witch, the first image that comes to mind is an aged hag with a steeple crowned hat. However, this was not always the rule. The 'witch' in this tale is one such exception.Unorna, the witch is beautiful, with her red gold hair and her well proportioned features who resides in a mansion, and spends the winter in the huge conservatory surrounded by lofty palms and ...

Anti-divorce novels, circa 1900
F. Marion Crawford often didn't espouse causes in his novels, but in these two novels he took on what he considered to be the "lenient" divorce laws coming into existence around the turn of the 19th century. In ADAM JOHNSTONE'S SON a divorced woman and her daughter are living in Europe. A boatload of tourists arrives and the daughter and a young man meet and fall in love. Later it is revealed ...

Timepiece
F. Marion Crawford's "The White Sister" was originally published in 1909, the year of Crawford's death. At the turn of the last century, he was a popular novelist, remembered more today for several of his spookier tales. This story is a bit dated in places. The author comments on his story, almost like a news correspondent commenting on what it's like to report the news. Several of his ...

His first novel, but certainly not his best
His first novel, set in India, Crawford seems more interested in presenting local color scenes, as well as the politics, religion, and customs of the country, than in telling an interesting story. Katherine presents the love interest, though she dies of jungle fever at the end. In one scene, that is typically Crawford while at the same time seeming ludicrous, everyone involved in a tiger hunt ...

Supernatural rip off
"The Screaming Skull" is a good ghost story, but you can buy F. Marion Crawford's complete set of supernatural short stories under the title "The Complete Wandering Ghosts" for almost the same price. If you'd like more variety, read "Great Tales of Terror and the Supernatural," edited by Herbert A. Wise and Phyllis Fraser. The latter book is one of the finest supernatural anthologies ever ...

A very enjoyable fantasy, set in "classical" Arabia.
This book is a delightful member of the broad category of Fantasy (of which Tolkien's _Lord_of_the_Rings_ may be the most famous work). But this is not a story of elves and orcs. It is, as you might guess, a story of camels, genies, noble Bedouin warriors, a beautiful (and clever) Arab princess, and the vast desert. The central plot device is a genie who is turned into a man, and given ...
