Instrument Flying Handbook: FAA-H-8083-15A (FAA Handbooks series)2 reviews
Federal Aviation Administration

Aviation Supplies & Academics, Inc., 2007

Very good reference
As with the FAA's "Instrument Procedures Handbook," this text is also freely available from the FAA as a full color PDF. You can download the entire book as one file or grab in it sections. http://www.faa.gov/library/manuals/aviation/instrument_flying_handbook/ This volume is the FAA "bible" on instrument flying, and as such forms the foundation for the instrument check ride standards. ...

Instrument Flying Handbook8 reviews
Federal Aviation Administration

Skyhorse Publishing, 2008

Beware of scams...
First off... this is an essential book. Do note that it can be downloaded for free from the FAA: [...] ...but many times it's better to have the print version. There are some vendors selling illegal CD versions of this on Amazon when you purchased that are not paperback as listed. Do NOT accept this if they send you a CD. Demand the print, book version if you purchase it - and do not ...

Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge: FAA-H-8083-25, December 2003 (FAA Handbooks series)10 reviews
Federal Aviation Administration

Aviation Supplies & Academics, Inc., 2004

A great digest of aviation basics
This book is definitely the best introductory book to the main aviation concepts I ever read. Each issue - from flight static and dynamics to FCS, propulsion, avionics and navigation, weather theory and influence, flight and ground operations - is considered in this book with a technical, but easily understandable, approach. The book is, as a matter of fact, an introduction and, therefore, is ...

Aviation Weather (FAA Handbooks)4 reviews

Published as an official FAA Advisory Circular, Aviation Weather (and the accompanying book AC 00-45 Aviation Weather Services) contains the info you will be required to know to pass the FAA private, commercial, and instrument rating written examinations. Aviation Weather is written in an easy-to-understand manner. It discusses the various cloud formations, formation of warm, cold, occluded, ...

Aerodynamics for Naval Aviators (FAA Handbooks)12 reviews
Federal Aviation Administration

Aviation Supplies & Academics, Inc., 2001

The definitive work in pilot-oriented applied aerodynamics
Here's my very simple take on this book: if you operate (fly) airplanes of any kind, you need to have this book in your easy-to-get-to library. Period. My only negative comment is that the current "FAA reprint version" (How did they get involved? This is not a typical "How to" FAA kind of publications!)of the original NAVOPS manual is of very poor reproduction quality. The photos and artwork ...

Rotorcraft Flying Handbook (FAA Handbooks)17 reviews
Federal Aviation Administration

Aviation Supplies & Academics, Inc., 2001

As good as it gets
I am thinking seriously about learning to fly helicopters at the age of 55. A private pilot's license can be purchased for a flat fee of $12,500 in my area, including a lot of extra hours to really add that extra safety factor of assurance beyond the minimum required. I bought this book to get a sense of what I would be getting into, and I find it fully satisfactory. It is the "official" ...

Instrument Procedures Handbook: FAA-H-8261-1A (FAA Handbooks series)2 reviews
Federal Aviation Administration

Aviation Supplies & Academics, Inc., 2007

FAR Flying Manuals
I was pleased to be able to find an official FAA publication in the Amazon bookstore. It means more to me as a certificated flight instructor to find this manual here than anywhere else. I can direct my students here and know they will be able to purchase it. The book content is pretty dry if you aren't a pilot with an instrument rating!

Glider Flying Handbook1 review

Skyhorse Publishing, 2007

Pretty, but written by bureaucrats
The book hits the right topics and has lots of illustrations, but the writing is soulless. This makes some of the explanations hard to understand. The section on basic flight physics, for instance, is incomprehensible. On the other hand, the sections on variometers and total energy systems are quite clear. It's as though the book were a slightly expanded checklist written by several different ...

Weather product examples ...

Instrument Procedures Handbook2 reviews
Federal Aviation Administration

Skyhorse Publishing, 2008

Excellent: all IFR pilots should have a copy ...
... the FAA provides the complete book, free, as a full color PDF. http://www.faa.gov/library/manuals/aviation/instrument_procedures_handbook/ Having a bound, printed version is very handy; however, the complete book is freely available from the FAA. Take a look at it there before you buy this re-print.

Pilot's Encyclopedia of Aeronautical Knowledge: Federal Aviation Administration5 reviews

Skyhorse Publishing, Inc., 2007

High quality printing
This is exactly the same as the FAA's "Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge," (FAA-H-8083-25) but this is a commercial reprint by Skyhorse Publishing and it uses better paper (thicker/glossier) than the FAA's printed version, so I highly recommend this one.
