Truly a useful introduction!
I sought out this book on the advice of a priest and was not expecting the book to as useful as it was! I was immediately drawn into the book as it explained how a devotional life can be integrated into any state of life. I especially was thankful of the effort de Sales puts into explaining what is proper for one to do according to their vocation in life. Though I am Catholic, a Pentecostal ...

Great spiritual and psychological insight
I love reading this saint's works because of his practical and insightful writings. He seems to be able to shine a light on psychological motivations, rationalizations and defenses, and to carefully examine them in the rays of truth. Sometimes it feels like he's almost ruthlessly piecing through and blowing all my cover. One of his passages seems to particuarly address the problems of modern ...

Mellow Advice in a Cantankerous Age
It is probably worth recapping the history of this remarkable series of spiritual writings provided by Paulist Press. In the late 1970s Paulist set out to provide a limited number of volumes of great western spiritual thinkers and authors. The original goal, as I recall, was to produce approximately eighty volumes for subscription or individual purchase, spread out over a period of about twenty ...

Marvelous pastoral advice
In this collection of letters written by Saint Francis de Sales, it's easy to see that people are the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. Saint Francis' gentle advice and counsel is as appropriate today as it was 300+ years ago. He clearly teaches his correspondents how to achieve holiness in whatever walk of life they find themselves in. Although a few of these letters are written to men ...

Authentic Devotion: A Modern Interpretation of Introduction to the Devout Life by Francis de Sales
Francis De Sales
Shaw Books
, 2002
Centuries ago, Francis de Sales–bishop of Geneva during the lifetime of many first generation Protestant Calvinists–wrote about the importance of having a spiritual director. Yet he later told his biographer such a person “would be difficult to find,” suggesting that in these circumstances, “We can look for guidance among the books of authors who are no longer living. Devotional books are our best Directors.” ...

Easy reading of a deep subject
I've read other books by deSales and loved them. This modern version is much easier to read while remaining faithful to the spirit of deSales. The book assures us that a deep prayer life is within the reach of those who desire it. The book offers inspiration, comfort and challenge in the form of guidance. Buy it, and let your heart soar with the Love of God.

What a beautiful book!
Since Brother Lawrence is my all-time favorite spiritual author, I could not wait to read this book. It is not so simple as Brother Lawrence, but it abounds with suggestions for walking with God (the original title of the book). Fr. Healy reminds us that God never asks more of us than we can give, and that love, not obligation and never fear, is the motor of the Christian life. Walk with God ...

Introduction to the Devout Life : A Popular Abridgment
This book by St Francis De Sales is very readable and inspiring for anyone wanting to be a lover of God. Written in the 1600's it is as relevant today as then. Aimed not at Religious or Priests but at Lay men and women it explains how to build your faith and prayer life. The abridgement enables today's reader to clearly follow the teachings of this French Bishop. Excellent reading.
