Don't waste your money!
Rather than spend your money on this extremely overpriced set, choose from the following options: 1. Buy the book with the CD set, which is included as a "package deal" 2. "Get a used copy" of a friend's CD's (because you're probably buying this for a class). 3. Download the songs...they're all public domain and available online.

The best survey available
This is the best general survey of music available. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to have a grasp of the periods and styles of Western music, even if they have little or no background in music. It also contains a sampling of world music. When used with the 6 CD supplement it will make anyone feel more "at home" with the history of music and open many windows for exploration.
Metaphysical Song
Gary Tomlinson
Princeton University Press
, 1999
In this bold recasting of operatic history, Gary Tomlinson connects opera to shifting visions of metaphysics and selfhood across the last four hundred years. The operatic voice, he maintains, has always acted to open invisible, supersensible realms to the perceptions of its listeners. In doing so, it has articulated changing relations between the self and metaphysics. Tomlinson examines these relations as they have been described by philosophers ...
Music in Renaissance Magic: Toward a Historiography of Others
Gary Tomlinson
University Of Chicago Press
, 1994
Magic enjoyed a vigorous revival in sixteenth-century Europe, attaining a prestige lost for over a millennium and becoming, for some, a kind of universal philosophy. Renaissance music also suggested a form of universal knowledge through renewed interest in two ancient themes: the Pythagorean and Platonic "harmony of the celestial spheres" and the legendary effects of the music of bards like Orpheus, Arion, and David. In this climate, Renaissance ...

A wise and profound approach to Monteverdi's music
Tomlinsom is an expert on Renaissance music and his writing is clear and sharp, with no obstrusive academicism. This book reveals a lot of information about music and life in 16th and 17th centuries.
