Can't recommend this book highly enough...
Let me start by stating that I am an avid reader of anything and everything. I mention this because this book is, for the most part, a pictorial record where the story is told through the captions. But I nevertheless find this book engrossing and throroughly enjoy its unromanticized, historical view of the distilling of my favourite drink. Don't get this book looking for colour photos of sunsets ...

Great little guide
Don't think they speak Anglish in Burns Country, my friends... don't get caught with your linguistic pants down in Ayrshire, or Glasgow, scratching your head wondering why all these nice people keep talking about some meal called dinna and some guy named ken who seems to be on everybody's mind. Buy yerself a nice, wee easy-to-carry pocket guide of the Mither Tongue. A good one to put together ...

This is a fantastic book! No one has ever published a tell all book about the Whisky industry let alone a biography. John McDougall is truely a Scottish Legend. His life experiences are things one would never read in a distillery brochure. Slaite!

Scottish Smugglers (Polygon)
Gavin D. Smith
Birlinn Publishers

This work embraces the historical imperatives that made smuggling lucrative, particularly during its 18th century "golden age", looking at the role of the Act of Union (1707) and Jacobitism in the encouragement and perpetuation of the Scottish smuggling trade. Contemporary society's attitudes to smuggling are explored, and the people who took part in it, their modus operandi, and the commodities they smuggled also are covered. A special chapter ...
The Secret Still
Gavin D. Smith
Birlinn Publishers
, 2004
This work covers Scottish illicit distilling. It examines the historical events and legislation that gave rise to, and sustained, its "boom" years. During those times, the Scottish countryside, and even city centres, teemed with "sma' stills" and were awash with whiskey which had been distilled without payment of excise duty.
