Eliot is superb as always! I would give this 10 stars if I could
This is Eliot's semi autobiographical novel, and tells the story of Maggie Tulliver and her brother Tom. The story takes place in the village of St. Ogg, and at the Mill on The Floss that's been in the Tulliver family for generations. Other reviewers have told enough of the story (in some instances too much) that I don't see the need to go into it again. I thoroughly enjoyed the way Eliot ...

Felix Holt - A Literary Hero to Fall in Love with...
This is my 4th novel by George Eliot (after "Adam Bede", "Middlemarch" and "The Mill on the Floss") and it has become my favourite along with "Middlemarch". "Felix Holt" is so marvelously written and gave me many hours of reading pleasure - I can't understand why it's not as highly acclaimed or well-known as Eliot's other novels. If you're a fan of Victorian literature, then you mustn't miss this ...

Probably The Best Novel On 19th Century England & The Industrial Revolution
George Eliot, (nom de plume of Mary Ann Evans), wrote a literary masterpiece with "Middlemarch." I was forced to read this novel in school at an age when term papers and grades meant more than absorbing the riches this book contains. I reread it recently, after thirty years, and it was/is so worth the revisit! The Barnes and Noble Classic Series Edition of "Middlemarch" contains an excellent ...
Daniel Deronda

Great style
'Daniel Deronda' is witty, descriptive, and romantic. Before there was Scarlett O'Hara, willful Gwendolyn Harleth schemed to get her way in a society that offered security only to the rich. The author offers fascinating glimpses of mid 1800's drawing rooms, hunting parties, casinos, and more, filling them with memorable characters. This is a classic English novel, verbose perhaps, but with a ...

This is definitely an important book by an important female author. It's a lot a page turning, but well worth it. Take your time and enjoy.

Insight into two great lives: George Eliot and D.F. Strauss
This was a labor of love by the editor, me, for this best-seller of 1847 is unknown today because of the ruthless campaign of censorship by powerful church leaders, who only permitted a small-print, forbidding limited edition for scholars who needed it. This user-friendly edition is large print, illustrated with interesting biographies and pictures of David Friedrich Strauss, the father of ...

A beautiful book but no copy of the film
The film itself, by T.S. Eliot and Hoellering is not available. A copy exists in the archives of the British Film Institute but it does not seem easy to get to it. What a shame for a cult play like « Murder in the Cathedral » ! The book presents the complete scenario with of course the text and all the directions necessary to imagine what is happening on the screen. Plus a great number of ...

Written mostly in the middle of the last century, the non-fiction essays here are remarkable in their aptness for today's America. She almost speaks directly to the Republican's "Contract with America", and to the bitter feuding over funds for The National Endowment of the Arts. Her two short stories "The Lifted Veil" and "Brother Jacob" are also equally fascinating. And such a contrast! One, ...

Adam Bede is the classic tale of child murder & bucolic romance in early nineteenth century England
"George Eliot" is the masculine pen name of the brilliant English classic novelist Mary Ann Evans (1819-1880). Evans grew up in Warwickshire and knew rural England like the back of her hand. It was with this background allied with her literary genius that persuaded her in 1859 to write her first full length novel "Adam Bede. She did so at the urging of her longtime lover George Henry Lewes. After ...

Important information about the Red Menace
Major Elliot's informed analysis is just as valid in 2004 as it was in 1949. The Russian's relentless pursuit of nuclear arsenals and world hegemony is a true threat to world peace, and in particular, Major Elliot makes a strong case for protecting Norway from the high probability of Russian Attack (p. 141). The Soviet, er, Russian High Command will be anxious to get hold of Norwegian ports for ...

Still love it
I hadn't read it since my college days and remembered loving it back then. It didn't disappoint, of course. George Eliot was a master story teller. I regret, for her, that she didn't live in this century.... The print in this edition seems a bit small... or maybe that's just my age!

Return to Raveloe
Silas Marner is a skillfully crafted novel to be enjoyed by readers with varied tastes. It was written by a woman, who found it necessary to use a man's name because of attitudes in England in the nineteenth century. It is built around problems that all of us face in our lives, such as, "How important is money?" As in all great novels, the characters change as the plot develops. SILAS ...

Reversals and recovery
George Eliot, born Marian Evans in 1819, spent most of her early life in rural Warwickshire. This early upbringing is apparent from her easy comfort in writing about country settings, with attention to detail and niceties that a born-Londoner would generally not be able to provide. Eliot's life was not that of the typical Victorian lady; she worked in publishing, including periodicals, ...

A Masterpiece that's even better on ebook
First off, I have to comment how nice it was to read this book on ebook. I remember starting to read Middlemarch several years ago on a paper book, and I didn't get past Dorothea's marriage to Casaubon. The book was so hefty and intimidating that I thought I would never finish, so I didn't. Actually trying to keep the book open to the right page was also very trying, and I suspect this also had ...

As classics go, it's pretty classic
Rarely have I enjoyed a classic with more surprise than Middlemarch. It looks to be an endless and boring morality tale from the plot summary, but reads like a work of high psychological art. The only other writer who has taken me so convincingly inside the thoughts of so many characters is Shakespeare. A strong compliment, but Eliot shows that she had the goods and somehow weaves an epic and ...

Absolutely loved the book. Could not put it down. Terrific and eloquent writing style. Phenomenal authorship. Very profound and human plot. One of the best books ever read. Highly recommend to those who like classics and do not mind a slow development in the beginning.

Captivating Book
Yes, it's an old book, but it's got a much better story, and better written than most new books that I have seen. It's fascinating to see how people lived, their habits, and the words that were common in that day. This book is fairly long, with twists and turns that you don't expect. It is way better than watching mindless t.v.

Possibly her best work, though not as well liked
Maggie as a child is a beautiful character; Eliot portrays the workings of her mind so truthfully and compellingly. She is full of fiery defiance and lives for the moment, whether in her need for Tom's affection or full of bitter regret after she realizes the consequences of her actions. One of the best illustrations of Maggie's ornery personality is when, after being told since she was young ...
